Hi again,
That was a great meeting! I think the girls have totally earned their cooking badge, so I'll get them tomorrow when I stop by the GS Store to pick up ice fishing badges. (Anyone else going? No need to bring gear--just show up at Scout Lake Park dressed for the weather.)
We had a lot of fun. First we played a game to see who has tried the most different kinds of food. It was neat to hear how many different kinds off food the girls have tried!
Then we moved on to "Chopped! Brownie Style!" For anyone not fans of the cooking TV show, contestants are given secret ingredients, and then told to make a dish out of them. Our girls split into three groups, and each group had to make their own dish using bananas, yogurt, and graham crackers. They had spoons, knives, cups, bags, plates, and their imaginations to work with, and they came up with some great dishes. Ask your scout what she invented--if she's willing to make it for you, you'll be in for a treat!
Finally, while eating our inventions, we talked a little bit about foods we've tried that may have been a little "different" but that we enjoyed anyways. Did you know we have girls that have eaten all sorts of things--from octopuses to frogs to bugs! After talking about that we watched a few minutes of a special Children's episode of "Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern" about some of the things other kids eat that we might think are strange, and things we eat every day that other kids might think are strange.
I forgot to give them their homework, so here it is:
Their job is to keep trying new foods until they find something they like that they've never tried before; then either write about the experience or try to remember it to share at the next meeting.
It was a great time--and if your scout is coming to the Feb 27th meeting--don't give away the spoilers!
Thanks for being a part of scouting,
Aleks Skibicki
