Girl Scouts: 2 Important Notes

Hi everyone,

1)  For Cookie Sellers:  I just wanted to check in and make sure everyone who sold cookies made sure to let Ms. Kelly know what recognitions their scout was choosing for the sales levels that had a choice (75, 125, 15 and 250 boxes).   Also if you're choosing the T-shirt for the 75 box recognition, make sure you tell Ms. Kelly the right size.  She has to have the choices locked in on Friday, so if you haven't let her know your choices, she'll pick for you and hope for the best.

2)  Meeting Adjustment for April:  Last month one of our two Highland View meetings only ended up with 2 scouts present.  So, this month, to use our resources wisely, we're going to narrow it back to just one HV meeting.  We'll use the Wednesday April 12th date for our Highland View meeting.  As always, you'll have the choice to go to either that meeting, or the meeting at College Park on April 26th.  (Note:  that College Park meeting may also be different than you have on calendars, since the original schedule sent out in September had the College Park date listed as the Wednesday in the middle of Spring break.)

Expect a Sign Up Genius to go out soon!

Girl Scouts: Two fun events approaching!

Hi everyone!

Two fun events are approaching.  We'll start with the farther one away:

I've sent this information out before, but want to plug it again since there are only two scouts registered so far!  The sleepovers at Discovery World are a ton of fun, and the girls always learn a thing or two while they're there.  (I also think some of our younger Greendale Troops are considering going this year too, making it a doubly fun event for our girls!)

And, this is the last year our 5th graders can do a Discovery World Sleepover.  Discovery World put together a new one this year "Light up the Night!".  Information is below.  All scouts can go--4th and 5th graders (and we'd sneak in a sixth grader if you really want!)  You can register at the link.  If you want/need the troop to cover the cost (no questions asked or tales told, as always!) just let me know.

Light up the Night Sleepover (Grades 2-5)
Date: Fri, May 12, 2017 06:00 PM - Sat, May 13, 2017 07:00 AM Central
Location: 500 N Harbor Drive, Milwaukee, WI, 53202, USA
Description: Come experience Discovery World's interactive exhibits after dark! Try out activities that glow, illuminate, and explore light. Use LEDs to make a light up pendant that will glow and sparkle through the night, then wake to breakfast and a sunrise over Lake Michigan.
Cost:  Current Girl Members $40 Current Adult Members $20

Second:  ROBOTS!

One of our other favorite troop traditions is coming up soon too:  The FIRST Team Robotics Competition!

Going to the robotics competition downtown is a 5 year Troop tradition and is VERY well loved.  Each year, high school students from all over the Midwest build robots to compete against each other in different games.  Their regional championship is at the UWM Panther Arena downtown from March 23-March 25th.  In addition to watching the robots compete, the girls get a chance to visit the "pit" and meet the robot builders and ask questions about the robots.  (And usually get all sorts of robot souvenirs--keychains, pins, etc.)  And it's all free!

Here's the game for this year--it looks BANANAS!  https://www.firstinspires.org/robotics/frc/game-and-season

Sadly, here's the bad news:  We have multiple cookie booths scheduled for Saturday morning, and unlike years past, we have school on Thursday and Friday the week of the competition so we can't sneak over during the school day.  Theoretically we could go on Thursday after school to see the practice matches and visit the pit areas--practice matches run until 6:30 that evening.  And even though Evie and I have cookie booths and soccer through most of Saturday, that doesn't mean you can't go on your own!  If any scouts do go on Saturday with their families, let me know and I'll make sure they get a STEM patch!

Are any scouts interested in an after-school field trip to watch robot sports downtown on Thursday 3/23?
I don't imagine we'd spend too much more than a couple hours there, so if we left 3:45-4:00, and got there by 4:20, I imagine we'd be on our way home by 6:30, and back in Greendale around 7:00.

Stay warm and be careful in the snow!

Girl Scouts: Meeting Recap, Pool Party, and a Request

Hi everyone,

First, the request:  Please (please), if your scout is signed up for a meeting, have her attend that meeting.  Sometimes snacks and crafts are perishable, and when a scout doesn't show up, those things get wasted.  Obviously, there are times when health, or babies, come up, and that's definitely not a problem--seriously, please don't deliver a baby at a Girl Scout meeting!  And sometimes a scout might just forget to come to scouts after school (Believe me, I 100% understand THAT!  Do I have stories to tell you from when I was a kid! :) ) But outside of those sorts of things, please please stick to the meetings your scout is signed up for.  Thanks for your consideration on this!

Second:  Here's who I have signed up for the Greendale Girl Scouts pool party Friday night 6:30-8:30 in the Greendale High School Pool:
Portia
Elena
Makenzie
Evie
Kahlen
Kortnie
Dea
Carrie
Samantha
Esabella
Madison
Katie

If someone wants to go that's not on the list let me know and we can try to get you in!

Third:  Our March Meeting!  This month, we celebrated World Thinking Day a couple weeks late!

We started by playing a couple games that reminded us about how girls can work together (and sometimes have to work together) to solve problems.  The girls had a lot of fun, and it turned out they're super smart and good at problem solving!

We moved on to a world-of-girls game.  Each girl had a map of the world, and we randomly picked the names of countries that had girl scout organizations in them  (There are 147 countries with recognized Girl Scout/Girl Guide groups!)  The girls had to quickly find that country on their world map to get a point for that round.  Whoever found the most Girl Scout countries won extra snacks at the end of the meeting!  Fortunately the girls were just as map-smart as they were problem-solving smart, and all got at least one win on their record.

Next, we had snacks from around the world.  We sampled snacks from England, Japan, China, Korea, and more and the girls got to try a lot of flavors they've never had before--and it turns out they even liked some of the exotic treats!

Finally, we learned about henna, a body art from the Middle east, Africa, Pakistan, and India, and gave ourselves some henna art.  We talked a little bit about how girls are the same around the world, and how they're different, and also about the challenges girls around the world can face that are different from the challenges the girls in Greendale might face.

I think all the girls had a good time, and with any luck learned and tried a little something new today too!
