Girl Scouts: Making Sure we're all set for Saturday

Hello everyone!

Since there's so much going on this Saturday, I just wanted to send one last itinerary out to make sure everything runs smoothly.

FIRST:  Girl Scout Teambuilding

We'll meet at our house at 8:15 (so we can leave at 8:30).   Our address is 4256 Teakwood Ct.  Greendale, WI 53129.  That's a few blocks east of Highland View, just south of 42nd and Ramsey.  If you drive east from Highland View, drive past the stop signs at 43rd and Ramsey and turn right on the next street.  Then make an immediate right into Teakwood Ct. And we're the second house on the right hand side.

There are 8 scouts going (listed below) and 8 seats available between our car and van, so we're all set there. Dress in comfortable clothing and athletic shoes.  

We will be at the Alice Chester Center:  N8651 Townline Road East Troy, WI 53120 Welcome Center:  1-800-597-3864, or 800-565-4475.  You can reach us by cell phone too:  414-241-3216.

I've included a permission slip as an attachment.  Please bring it with your scout when you drop her off.  I will have extras to fill in if you don't bring it though.

SECOND:  Old World Wisconsin Halloween Legends and Lore

We'll be departing from the Highland View playground at 4:30.  (Unless our soccer game runs long.)  You are encouraged to arrive early to cheer on our Greendale Strikers, as they take on the MG Stars!  The event runs until 8:30, and it's about a 45-50 minute drive.  So, if your scout is driving with us (see below) we'll meet back up at our house around 9:30PM.

Girl Scouts: Register now! And a small calendar change from Discovery World

Hello everyone!

I'm just registering folks for the various Discovery World Workshops/Badge programs, and wanted to make sure everyone who wanted to go registered ASAP.  Looking at the DW site, some of these are filling up fast.

You'll note one change--the Computer Expert Brownie Workshop got moved to November 18th instead of January 14th.  DW did some schedule shifting.  If you asked me to register your scout for that, but can't make the new date, let me know.  We'll find something to do on January 14th (the old date) too!

So, here's the list of things I need to know who to register ASAP.  Same caveat as always--there are prices listed, but if you can't, or for any reason don't want to pay the fee, just say the word, and the troop will cover it with no questions or rumors.  Thanks a million, and see you scouting!

November 18 Flowers (Junior Botanist Badge)  (4th Graders) 6:00-8:00 

$10/Girl Scout

Become a botanist as you dissect a flower and learn which flowers can be made into medicines to help with common illnesses. Design a flower bouquet out of non-traditional materials and find out what happens when you mix the natural world with the man-made world as you vacuum form flowers in the Kohl's Design It! Lab.

November 18 Computer Expert Badge (2-3rd Grade) 6:00-8:00

$10/Girl Scout

It's time for Girl Scouts to go digital! Girl Scouts will learn about internet safety as they use the internet to go on a virtual road trip and send virtual letters to friends and family.

Girls Scouts will use robots called EggBots® to create artwork on Ping-Pong balls and

even create their own digital stationery.

Currently interested (depending on whether the date still works):  Lia, 2nd Grade Olivia, Evie

January 14 Digital Photography (4th Graders) 5:00-8:00 

$15/Girl Scout

Learn the ins and outs of digital photography from experts as you go on a photo shoot all over Discovery World. Beauty is in the eye of the editor! Digitally edit your photos and create a digital photo album using Mac® computers in the Print and Publishing Lab!

Girls can bring their own cameras but are not required to.

February 6 Junior Jewelers (4th Graders) 5:00-8:00

$15/Girl Scout

In the Kohl's Design It! Lab, Girl Scouts will create their own jewelry out of metal using tools such as pliers and wire cutters. Girls will also learn to upcycle by repurposing everyday objects and use recycled materials to create jewelry. You'll never look at a vinyl record the same!

Discovery World

May 2 Home Scientist (2-3rd Grade) 6:00-8:00PM

$10/Girl Scout

Have you ever wondered how crystals are formed? Girls Scouts will learn how to create non-Newtonian matter, explore the difference between a solid, liquid, and gas, and study chemical reactions.

Girl Scouts will be introduced to the science behind static electricity and more as they discover the science that takes place right in their homes.

May 20 Junior Detective (4th Graders) 6:00-8:00

$10/Girl Scout

A crime has been committed at Discovery World and we need your help to figure out who did it! Become a detective as you learn how to decode messages, identify fingerprints, and use microscopes to analyze hair samples left at the scene. Gather evidence from the crime scene and see if you can solve the mystery!

Girl Scouts: That was fun--and a couple other things

Hello!

That was a great meeting!

We're focusing on using stories to show how people (even young people) can make a changes in the world.  The girls all spent some time thinking about issues in their home, school, community, and globe, about which they can make positive changes.  

We also talked about how puppets and dolls have been used throughout history and around the world to tell stories and deliver lessons.  As part of the meeting the girls made corn husk dolls, and as homework, it would be great if they could think about (they don't actually have to do a show) creating a puppet show about how a girl can make a positive change on an issue they see.

And speaking of changes!

First:  Make sure the girls wash their hands well after playing with their corn husk dolls.  They were made by a company that also dries peppers.  If a girl is very sensitive to peppers it could cause her to feel itchy.  

Second:  Some teachers have asked (and I think it would help too) that if girls are scheduled to go to scouts that you write something about it in their agenda.  I send attendance lists to teachers that I draw from the sign up genius lists, so they have it in email, but it would be nice for everyone to have a backup.  

That way if a girl thinks they should be at scouts, but really shouldn't, or if they weren't on the signup list, but you'd like them to go to the meeting, or if I misread an attendance list, we'll have a final authority to appeal to.  I realize I didn't send a reminder email with who was signed up on the SignUp Genius list, relying on the automatic SignUp Reminder to do the job.  I'll go back to personally sending out a list before each meeting of who I'm expecting.  If your scout's name isn't on the list but you are sending her, you can let me know then!

Girl Scouts: Really Especially Need A Parent Helper on Thursday

Hello scout families!

Girl Scouts has specific ratios of kids-to-adults that we have to maintain.  It also makes it much easier on Kelly and I to have an extra parent there, especially when there are 17-18-19 girls in the room.

Girl Scouts: This crazy week!

Hello Girl Scout families!

Such a crazy week coming up, here's the rundown and important information:

1)  Meetings are this Wednesday or Thursday.  Pick a date here:  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a4fa5ad22a13-october I would especially appreciate folks picking the Wednesday date, since Thursday is pretty loaded!

2)  Saturday has a lot going on. 

First the Teambuilding Event in the morning.  Here's who I have signed up to actually go on Saturday--if you thought you were on the list, but don't see yourself here, let me know ASAP and I'll get it sorted.

Those girls going will be filling up our car and van, and departing from our house at 8:30 to get to Alice Chester in East Troy before 9:30.  I will have permission slips when you drop your scout off--make sure you fill one out before leaving.  That ends at 12:00, and we'll be getting home around 1:00 if you want to pick your scout up.  Which brings us to:

Second, Old World Wisconsin Legends and Lore.  Evie and I have a soccer game from 3:30-4:30 at Highland View (that's what those soccer goals are for!)  We'll be leaving for Old World Wisconsin from there at 4:30, so we can get to the event by 5:30.

If there are adults listed, I'm assuming you'll be driving yourselves, but I'd still like to meet at the soccer field at 4:30 so we can caravan out to old World Wisconsin.  That way the girls can stick together when we get there.  It would be AWESOME if the girls could get there early to cheer the team on, since a lot of the girls on the soccer team are scouts too; Katie, Evie, Hannah, and Elli would love to see you cheer them on!

Finally:  Make sure you're selling those nuts!  The nut sale orders need to be turned in October 25th--the clock is ticking.  (Thanks everyone!)

STEMfest filled up, and Update on the UWM Soccer Game

Hello everyone,

I went in to register a couple scouts that signed up last night, and as of this moment, the labs at STEMfest on 11/7 are all booked up.

And, speaking of events that are in limbo--the UWM Soccer Game.  I will not be able to go, since our own soccer team will be in the middle of a tournament at that time.  BUT, if anyone else wants to go, let me know and I can send the form in to have your tickets (for admission and for patches/hot dog/soda) waiting at the gate.

Girl Scouts: Last Call for STEMfest!

Hi again,

I was just registering a girl for the events at STEMfest 11/7, and saw Girl Scouts only has 5 more spaces available for the Chapstick making lab.
