Hello Scout Families!
First: Thanks to everyone who came to the cookie kick-off party on Thursday! As usual it was a lot of fun. If it keeps growing though, we may have to move to a bigger venue! I hope your scouts had as much fun as I did. If you have ideas for new games or activities for future events, let me know too. We're always looking for ways to make things better.
Second: We had a couple of excellent meetings (some of my favorites) this week. The Wednesday and Thursday meetings were pretty different, so let me recap them somewhat separately.
Wednesday, Barb Nissel and Cindy Kacmarcik from Greendale School District came to talk with the girls about their project to help the kids in school eat healthier. With Barb and Cindy's help the girls developed a menu that the Greendale elementary schools will actually have for lunch on March 6th! The girls hoped that if kids knew that other kids chose those healthy foods, then they would be more likely to try it! Food services will give the troop credit for the menu that day, so keep an eye out for your scout's achievement!
After hearing from Ms. Barb and Ms. Nissel, the girls worked on using resources wisely by recycling old cookie boxes into coin purses to use, and also made thank you cards for Ms. Barb,, Ms. Cindy, and Ms. Erin who spoke with us last month and will be helping us get involved in teaching the school how to compost as that program starts up in the school district.
Thursday the girls took a break from their "Don't Smoke" project, to just have a a lot of cookie fun. We spent some time designing our perfect cookies, then naming them and designing a box for them. Then we also recycled old cookie boxes into change purses. Finally we played a cookie guessing game, and shared with each other what kind of cookie we thought we were most like and why.
Third: Upcoming Events
A few things are coming up that I'd love to get more girls involved in. Remember--don't worry about cost if you think it's a problem, and don't worry about tansportation-we'll find a way to get scouts where they need to go!
1) Junior Jewelers at Discovery World (4th grade)
2/6 5:00-8:00PM ($15)
I only have 2 girls signed up. (Gabby and Adrhia in case you were wondering.) While this is a 4th grade event, it looks pretty awesome, so if you're on the fence, I'd hope you choose to go. Let me know ASAP though as Discovery World will want to know how many to expect. Scouts attending will earn their jeweler badge too! Here's the description:
In the Kohl's Design It! Lab, Girl Scouts will create their own jewelry out of metal using tools such as pliers and wire cutters. Girls will also learn to upcycle by repurposing everyday objects and use recycled materials to create jewelry. You'll never look at a vinyl record the same!
2) Senses Workshop at the Lighthouse (2nd-3rd grade)
2/21 9:00-Noon ($8)
This looks great, but I only have 3 girls signed up as interested! More would be awesome!
Explore our five senses and discover new ways to interact with the world. Held at the historic North Point Lighthouse. The girls will go on a winter scavenger hunt and view local landmarks and features of the area. The girls will identify historic household items by touch and compare them to modern implements. The girls will use taste and smell to identify foods eaten in the early 1900's by the Lighthouse's inhabitants. The girls will learn braille and read a message in braille about the lighthouse. The girls will complete all the requirements for their "Senses" badge.
3) NEW EVENT LISTING
World thinking Day Event 2/27 6-8PM
Every Year Girl Scouts at Whitnall Middle and High Schools put on an event sharing games and activities and cultures from girls around the world. In addition to learning, the girls will earn their World Thinking Day Badge. No registration fee. Just let me know if your scout wants to go!
4) February Spa Chemistry Sleepover at Discovery World
2/20-2/21 7:00PM-7:00AM ($35/Girl Scout and $10/Chaperone)
OK, it actually sounds like there's more interest (six girls) in February than in March. So I don't feel completely selfish switching to February for this event. If more folks sign up for March, we can have a group go then too though--so don't feel like you're out in the cold if we do February!
There's one thing though: they asked us to keep the number of chaperones to the Girl Scout guidelines, due to limited bed space. But we have a lot of parents who asked to chaperone. (Cretia, Liz, Jeanine, Becky, and Me) We'd have 6 Girl Scouts and 5 parents. I could probably get us by with three parents, though the official guideline for 6 girls on a sleepover is 2. (But since I'm a boy I have to sleep elsewhere, so I could argue we need two moms to be chaperones.) Are any of the moms who indicated thy were interested in chaperoning willing to sit this one out? I promise you'll be #1 on the chaperone list the next time you want to!
Event description: Discover the science and art of perfumes, soaps, and lotions. Concoct your own unique spa recipes and take home your own signature fragrance. Explore Discovery World's interactive exhibits into the wee hours of the night. Pet a shark in the Reiman Aquarium, lie on the Bed of Nails, and wake up to a sunrise over Lake Michigan.
Cost includes admission to Discovery World; all program supplies and lab activities; fun patch; a snack on Friday, and breakfast.
5) Finally, don't forget that on 2/14 we'll be doing the ice fishing clinic at Scout Lake Park. No registration, or fee, or equipment needed! We'll set a meet up time as the day gets closer!
Thanks for reading all the way to the bottom, and happy scouting!
