Hello families!
What a fun and busy September! Can you believe the Silverbrook campout was only 3 weeks ago? I just wanted to recap the meeting with a few links for things to try at home, and then there are a few events coming up that I need to turn in registrations for ASAP.
Meeting recap:
We started out our meetings this year with a service project for Meals on Wheels. They asked community members to make placemats and decorate lunch bags for folks getting the meals on wheels--so that's what we did! I like the idea of starting our meetings with a little service project. We'll do this one for a few days, but if anyone else has ideas of projects we can work on for the first 10-15 meeting minutes while we wait for scouts from other schools to meet up I'm all ears!
Then we got our patches for events we did over summer. I included a checklist for each girl--if I missed something, just let me know! The records of who was at each parade were kind of skimpy, and I'd hate for anyone to miss a patch!
We also got our Nut Sale materials for this year. The Nut Sale isn't a big hullabaloo like the Cookie Sale each year, but it is important to the troop--remember, the girls are saving up to go on a big trip to Washington DC in 2 years! (When the majority are done with 5th grade, and moving to the middle school.) Please give it a look and join in!
Then we voted on what patch we want to start our year working on. The big announcement will come next meeting, so I'll let the suspense build!
Finally we learned a girl scout tradition--braiding lanyards. Some of the girls took right to it, and some had some trouble. If you want to work with them on their lanyards at home, here's a site that may be helpful. I linked to the video starting at 1:45 since most of the girls at least got their lanyards started, so you don't need that part. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BU2WEFMJrI#t=1m45s
Moving on:
Some Girl Scout events get booked up really fast. If we want to do them, I'll need to get our numbers in ASAP. If you want to do one of these events, please let me know right now!
1) STEM Fest at Discovery World 5:00-8:00 November 6th. Many STEM related activities, including make-your-own-salon products! (As well as many other topics from the environment, to water science, to robotics, and beyond!) $5 per scout, since we'll register for one of the two labs available. (Make your own sugar scrub, or up-cycle a flower vase.)
2) November 13 Junior Detectives Badge at Discovery World 6:00-8:00PM $12/Scout Discovery World Museum
A crime has been committed at Discovery World and we need your help to figure out who did it! Become a detective as you learn how to decode messages, identify fingerprints, and use microscopes to analyze hair samples left at the scene. Gather evidence from the crime scene and see if you can solve the mystery!
3) January 13 or 20 WI Humane Society Program 6:00-7:45PM $7/Scout, $4/adult
Wisconsin Humane Society Milwaukee Branch Go behind the scenes at the Humane Society of Wisconsin. Interact with cats and kittens, and make a cat toy to take home. Learn about dogs and dog training in "Dog Town!"
4) February 26-27 Playing the Past Overnight Event 6:30PM 2/26-9:00AM 2/27 $25/Scout, $10/Adult

5) April 17 Little House on the Prairie 1:00-4:00 PM
$16/Scout, $5/Adult Old World Wisconsin

Help make and taste butter and cornbread like Laura and Mary made. Make a craft from one of Laura's books and play games that Laura and Almanzo played.
FINALLY, The October 17th Halloween Legends and Lore event at Old World Wisconsin is coming up really quickly. I'll get the coupons for the discounted tickets. I know the girls that went liked it a lot last year! If your scout needs a ride, let me know and we can arrange carpools! Details: October 17 Old World Wisconsin Legends and Lore 5:30PM-9:00PM
Adults $10, children 5-17 $7, children 4 and under free (best enjoyed by children 8 and older). Admission Special: Visit any WaterStone Bank branch to get a $2 off per admission coupon.
Join us for an always spooky, sometimes scary, rain-or-shine event as we celebrate the immigrant legends we brought with us and the folklore we created here at home. Halloween Legends and Lore features the folk and fairytales of the Old World as well as Wisconsin ghost stories from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Thanks for reading this far!
