Girl Scouts: Rush jobs! 3 Deadlines! Nothing about Washington DC!

Hi everyone!

Three big deadlines coming up.

1)  let's get bronzed!  Our first Highland View meeting for October is next Wednesday (the next email from me will have the sign up for the October meetings) and we want to get started on the actual work of our Bronze project.  WHICH MEANS, we have to pick it out.  So,I put all of the girls' proposals online at this site:  http://greendaledaisies.blogspot.com/p/here-are-links-to-all-of-our-troops.html

Please take a moment this weekend and read through the proposals and pick 2-3 that your scout thinks would be the best choices for our troop to actually do.  Write your scout's thoughts and choices in the comments at the bottom of that page.

2)  Any last takers for the October 15th UWM Soccer Game?  The game is October 15th, at 2:00PM at Englemann Field at UWM.

$3.00 gets you a your ticket, a hot dog, a soda, and the UWM patch.

Sign up if you can go, and let me know how many TOTAL tickets you'll need. (Family is invited!)

3)  Volleyball!  And, the following week, (October 22nd) is anyone interested in the UWM Women's Volleyball game at 4:00 PM, followed by a post-game volleyball clinic?  It's the same deal as the soccer game:  $3.00 gets you a ticket, hot dog, soda, and patch.  I can't go to that one, but if some want to go, I can sign the troop up and everyone can pick up their tickets, vouchers, and patches at Will-Call at the game.

That's the deadlines coming up!  Please let me know!

Thanks thanks thanks!

Girl Scouts: Washington DC Info for those who signed up as "Interested and Available"

Hi everyone!

Now that we know who's interested and available, we can get into some of the nitty gritty.

Based on the list of who's both interested and available for the trip the week of June 18-24th, we have 26 scouts interested and available. (See list at the end of this email, since the sign up is now closed.)  That means we'd be required to bring 6 parents to fill both Girl Scout safety ratios and driving/sleeping arrangements, bringing our trip number to 32.  More than those 6 adults could come along, but because those are outside of the Girl Scout numbers, and what we would need for the trip, those adults would be handled separately.

Trip wise, Kathleen, Ms. Kelly, and I spent a lot of time considering travel arrangements, lodging, food, and what to do when we get there.

For travel we compared trains, buses, air, and passenger vans based on travel time, price, and convenience.  In almost every case, it just makes sense to rent three 15 passenger vans for the trip.  The only place the vans didn't win on all three counts was in travel time (where air-travel was the clear winner, obviously.)  In addition to being by far the least expensive option, and by far faster than trains or buses, vans give us the option to make several stops along the way, and had the added benefit of giving us travel options while in Washington DC if we change our itinerary to include a more distant site.  (For example:  If we have a great cookie sale this year and decide to spend a day going to Mt. Vernon, having our own transportation makes that very very easy.)  The downside to vans however is the requirement that we actually drive them.  To keep things as safe as possible, we need to have 2 drivers per van, alternating at need.  Which means the best possible option would be for all 6 chaperones to meet all the Girl Scout driver requirements.

For lodging, based on the number of people traveling, we looked into a couple of different options:  1) renting entire houses, and 2) staying at local hotels.  Unfortunately, while there's a certain allure to just having a big house for us all to stay in for the trip, availability was limited.  In every case we ran into either location or parking issues (or both.)  Also, only one house came close to being able to fit everyone, and that was located far from anything interesting.

Hotels turned out to be the better option, and one hotel in particular stood out:

The "Marriott Residence Inn" is within a few blocks (1/2 mile) of the Smithsonian Museums and the US Capitol, as well as most of the major Washington DC attractions.  Reserving space this early can get us into 6-person rooms for $270 per night.  In addition, this hotel has an indoor pool for the girls to relax and play in when we get done with each day's activities, includes complimentary breakfast for everyone each morning, and includes a kitchenette in each room to help us prepare lunches for our day trips, or even group dinners at night if we choose.

Once we're in Washington DC, we have a lot of options for our daily excursions, and most are free!  We will let the girls prepare the exact itinerary before we go, but options include:

The Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, Natural History Museum, Native American History Museum, Art Museum, African American History Museum (just opened!), National Zoo, and the various memorials and monuments.

The girls will also write letters to our Congresspeople and Senators in the next month, to try to get tickets to the US Capitol tour, and/or White House.

Our itinerary will look similar to:

Leave Milwaukee around 5:00AM June 18th  Arrive around 8PM June 18th.  Swim for an hour or two, eat dinner, go to bed.
19th:  Breakfast at hotel.  Do some cool stuff. Eat lunch (bagged or bought) Do some different cool stuff.  Return to hotel for dinner, swim, and bed.
20th:  Breakfast at hotel.  Do some cool stuff. Eat lunch (bagged or bought) Do some different cool stuff.  Return to hotel for dinner, swim, and bed.
21st:  Breakfast at hotel.  Do some cool stuff. Eat lunch (bagged or bought) Do some different cool stuff.  Return to hotel for dinner, swim, and bed.
22nd:  Breakfast at hotel.  Do some cool stuff. Eat lunch (bagged or bought) Do some different cool stuff.  Return to hotel for dinner, swim, and bed.
23rd:  Eat breakfast at hotel, visit a morning site or attraction, eat lunch at that site (bag or buy), hit the road at 4:00PM, dinner on the road, arrive in Milwaukee 7:00 AM June 24th.

So, what will this all cost?

Prices for travel, lodging, and expenses are:

~$4000 for three 15 passenger vans.
~$2000 for food/meals:  Breakfast at the hotel is free, we'd order pizza or some other delivery or cook our own dinner (pasta?)  at the hotel, and would prepare bag lunches for our day trips generally, possibly eating at the attractions 1-2 of the days.
~$9240 for our hotel stay (6 rooms) arriving in DC June 18th and Leaving June 23rd

=$15,240

We currently have $12,700 in our account.  Which means, at this precise moment, the 26 scouts, plus the 6 required chaperones would each have to chip in between $80-100.  If you want to send your scout with spending money for souvenirs, etc. that would be at your own discretion.

Additional participants would cost about $500 to go.  (Possibly less if we didn't need to add an extra van for travel, or an extra room to the hotel reservation.  But while a 15 passenger van SAYS 15 passengers fit, it really means 10-12 fit OK especially with luggage, etc. factored in.  We'd pretty much have to add at least an extra van to fit more adults.  Which would also mean we'd have to add more adults willing to drive.)

We have the nut sale that starts October 7th, and the Cookie Sale in Feb/March to change these figures.  A good Nut and or Cookie sale would also give us options for more daring excursions in and around Washington DC (like the example I mentioned of going to Mt. Vernon which would cost $350 for 26 kids and 6 adults to go.)

We will base the choices for the first six chaperones on parents who've helped the most, and are willing to share in the driving.  To make sure we're keeping it fair, if you're interested as an adult going on the trip, please email Ms. Kelly and I your "Troop 8035 Resume" so we're not short-changing anyone from their service.  Make sure to indicate if you are able and willing to help drive a van for the trip, as well as any volunteer time you've spent with the troop whether it's at meetings, events, activities, etc.  Ms. Kelly's email address is kellymatt8476@gmail.com and I'm at this address.

This sounds like it's going to be AWESOME!

Happy Scouting,

Aleks

Girl Scouts: Girl Scouts Storm the Capital!

Hi everyone!

Since planning has to keep moving forward, I'm going to base initial plans for the trip around the numbers on the "Interested and Available" sign up list as of Saturday night 9/24/2016.  I'll use that as numbers for considering things like how many hotel rooms we'd need, transportation, etc. and then use that to figure out things like costs, and how many cookies and nuts we have to sell to get the costs to specific points.

If you're not on the list as of Saturday night, I'll assume your scout is either not interested, or not available that week.  Keep in mind, this list is not a "You're locked in and have to go!" list.  It's merely a list to indicate that your scout is interested in taking a trip to Washington DC with the rest of the troop, and is available that week to go with the rest of the scouts.  If your scout doesn't even want to go, or isn't going to be available that week, then we won't even start to worry about transportation or hotel space for her, and that'll keep the numbers a lot more accurate.

(We will get to the "You're locked in and have to go!" sign up pretty soon though.  If you want to get to that list when it comes, make sure you're on this one.)

Thanks!  Keep scouting!

Girl Scouts: Update to the Washington DC Sign Up--Who can't go?

Hi everyone!

I've updated the sign up page for the Washington DC "Who's interested" page to include a spot to sign up if you know for sure your scout cannot go.

Please let me know if that's the case so we can figure out what the upper cap is for numbers of trip go-ers.

Thanks!

Girl Scouts: What you've all been waiting for!

Hi everyone!

OK, a short-ish email today.  But, it ends with some very important news!

1)  First, we're starting out 2016-2017 with a great meeting!  The girls are really learning to take charge and work on their own!

We started by putting together formal proposals for projects to acheive our Bronze Award goal of getting kids to wear their bike helmets.  The girls came up with proposals that included a specific goal, a list of potential community partnerships, a list of materials they would require, and a step by step process to implement their program.  I'm in the process of putting the proposals on line, and when all of our meetings for September are done, I'll put all the proposals out there so all the girls can look through them.  Then, BEFORE our October meeting, the girls will vote online (parent input/involvement allowed, but the final choice is up to the girls!) so we can start October meetings right away working on one or more of the projects.

We followed that up with something really fun.  Since the next choice of patch to pursue was the Sports/Exercise patch, we let the girls invent a new sport and teach it to all of us!  I brought a big bucket of various implements that could be used to make a game, and the girls had a ton of fun creating their own sports.  (And quite frankly the games were pretty fun!)  I'm also in the process of putting these inventions online so we'll have our very own troop game-book we can go back to and use in the future!

2)  Second, an October event!  I recently got the flyer in the mail for the UWM Women's Soccer Girl Scout Game for this year, and seeing as how much overlap there is between our soccer girls and our scouts, I figured we might want to hit it again this year.

Here are the details:

The game is October 15th, at 2:00PM at Englemann Field at UWM.

$3.00 gets you a your ticket, a hot dog, a soda, and the UWM patch.

Sign up if you can go, and let me know how many TOTAL tickets you'll need. (Family is invited!)

3)  Third, what you've all been waiting for:  Washington DC dates!  After blacking out important dates (Army drill, WYSA Soccer Tryouts, School, etc.) our Washington DC trip will be the week of June 18th-24th.

I don't have pricing details, primarily because we don't know what our troop account will look like, nor do we know how many people are interested and available to join in that week.  We still have a nut sale and a cookie sale to add into the account before the trip, and depending on how many scouts we're dividing the amount up by the cost could vary by quite a bit.

In order to start getting that nailed down though, let's at least get a feel for how many scouts are available and interested in going June 18-24th, 2017.  This isn't binding, or anything like that.  But it will let us get started reserving hotel/living space for our trip and knowing how much we actually have to book!

Sign up here:

That's about it!  Happy scouting!

Girl Scouts: I just renewed memberships--you may get an email from scouts!

Hi everyone,

I just renewed memberships online so we're all set to get going for 2016-2017.

If you were previously registered as an adult member of the troop, and I renewed your membership, you may get an email from scouts requesting you complete the volunteer background check.  If you're no longer interested in volunteering with the troop (as a chaperone, etc.) then you can ignore that.  Otherwise, if you could take a moment and fill that out it would be fantastic!

Thanks a million!

Girl Scouts: September Meeting Sign Up!

Hi everyone!

Here's the sign up for September.  The first Highland View based meeting is coming up quickly.  Remember, any girl can go to any meeting--you don't need to be a College Park student to go to a College Park meeting, nor do you have to be a Highland View student to go to a Highland View meeting.

Also, I'm looking for ideas for things to look at for events and activities and field trips for this year.  If you have something, let me know!

See you soon,

Aleks

Girl Scouts: More campout information!

Ok, hi again!

I have our activity lists in hand for camp, and here they are.  You'll notice 2 things somewhat quickly:

1)  No swimming this year.  So don't pack a suit!

2)  We do have a Tie-Dye session scheduled in.  We have some options here for the girls that already tie-dyed their shirts.  They can A)  just hang out in our cabin, and play some games or take a nap or just chat since tie-dyeing is right there.  Or, B)  I'll have alternative tie-dye items for them to do if they want.

Here are the schedules.  We'll be split into two groups--if you're one of the families with girls leaving early on Saturday for soccer, take a look and let me know what schedule has the activities your scout  would prefer in the morning.  (Hopefully you agree, and if you're riding home together I can get you both in the same group.)

8035 A
10:00 Field Games
11:00 Herbs & Renaissance Food
12:00 Lunch
1:00 Princess Crafts
2:00 Tie Dye
3:00 Archery

12:00 Princess Crafts

3)  Packing List:

!!EMERGENCY CONTACT INFORMATION!!
Sunscreen
Bug spray
Change of clothes
Long pants/sweatshirt if it turns cold
Comfortable walking shoes
Something to tie your scout's hair back at the fire, if she has long hair
Rain/mud boots if it looks like the trails will be muddy
Snack for during the day
Light/small backpack (a drawstring bag is just about right.)
A water bottle (filled, because the water at camp tastes camp-ish)

In addition, for sleep-over scouts:

Girl Scouts: Schedule Update, and Beach Clean Up Change of Plans

Hi everyone!

We'll start with the last, first.  Did anyone notice we had a beach cleanup scheduled for tomorrow evening?  Looking at the schedule, between soccer, and getting ready for camp, not to mention our current weather, would anyone be distraught if we held off on the beach cleanup until a slightly less crazy week?

Moving on to the beginning, we have a meeting schedule!  The dates I proposed earlier got OK-ed, so here are our meeting dates for this year.  Note:  They're all Wednesdays.  Generally I'll get a sign up genius out for the meeting at least a week before.  This month ought to be the only exception because of the amount of stuff going on right now and how long it took to get the schedules locked in in the first place.  Expect the first HV meeting sign up page to go live on Sunday night or Monday.  Here are our dates:

Highland View:
9/14, 28
10/5, 12
11/2, 9
12/7, 14
1/4, 11
2/1, 8
3/1, 8
4/5, 12
5/3, 10

College Park:
9/21
10/19
11/16
12/21
1/18
2/15
3/15
4/26
5/17

We'll have to fill in the calendar with some events through the year.  If you know something, or have a good idea, let me know!

Now keep an eye on your inbox for a camp update in a few minutes!

Girl Scouts: Campout weekend!

Hi everyone!

Our first event of the school year is here already, can you believe it?

Our campout is this weekend (September 9-10-11).  At the end of the email is a list of who I have signed up.

Some organizational details first:

0)  If you're signed up for camp, I'd like to pre-tie-dye our shirts this year.  So, Wednesday night at 6:00 we'll have a Dye-Party at our house.  Please plan to come if you're signed up for camp!  I'll be picking up the shirts tomorrow night or Tuesday night so we'l be all ready!  You don't have to come right at 6:00--imagine there's a Tie-Dye window open from 6:00-8:00, and show up when you can.

0.1) If your scout is signed up for camp, please send them with a copy of the bottom section of the attached permission slip filled out too.

1)  There are 7 girls signed up to go to camp Friday night and sleep over until Saturday.  I have room for up to 6 in my van.  Which means I'll need at least one scout family to drive down to camp on Friday.  If anyone can drive their scout to Silverbrook campground Friday night, that would be WONDERFUL!  I should be able to bring that group back Saturday night however, since Evie will be staying behind leaving me with only 6 riders.

2)  We're staying in the Sandy Point building.  (Where we usually stay!)  I'm scanning in a map to include so you can find the building once we're at camp.  If all goes well, I'll be there already.  (If all doesn't go well, then I will be on my way!)

3)  Scouts going to camp on Saturday 9/10 will generally need rides (while I am returning to camp Saturday morning, I am returning very very VERY early in the morning to set up activities and games in the game field.)  If your scout needs a ride to camp on Saturday, let me know ASAP, and we can coordinate with other folks going up for carpools.  If you're meeting us at camp Saturday morning, we'll be waiting for you by JoAnn Mann lodge, which is the main building for the campground, not the one we're staying at.  Look for us on the grassy area south of the lodge.  Please be there as close to 9:00 as possible!

4)  My cell phone number is 414-595-6668 if you need to reach me.  After 8:30PM or so Friday night, Kathleen should also be at camp and her number is 414-241-3216 .  Reception isn't always the greatest so try both of us if you can't reach on your first try.

5)  If you're riding up with me Friday night in our van, please be at my house (4256 Teakwood Ct.) at 4:00 (or before) so we can get to Silverbrook on time.  I'd like to leave basically at 4:00 if possible.

6)  We're planning to leave camp at 9:30 on Sunday.  If your scout would like a ride back home on Sunday morning, let me know now.  Kathleen and I will both have vehicles at camp, so we should have a decent amount of space available. HOWEVER, we aren't going right home.  Evie needs to be at Uihlein soccer park at 11:00 for a game, so we'll be heading straight there.  If your scout will ride with us and you want to pick her up there you can, otherwise the scouts we bring home can cheer at the game (several scouts will be playing!) and we'll get them back to our house in Greendale around 1:15.

7) Make sure to send/bring any medications or emergency supplies we hopefully won't have to use.  (Epi pens, etc.)

8)  Have fun!  The packing list, and camp rules are here on the website too if you don't want to go back through your email.

9)  Here's the list of scouts I have signed up:

Coming up to camp Friday Night and returning home Saturday Night

Mahi Patel
Samantha Sarenac
Alyssa Schwartz
Alison Depp
Isabel Schrank
Hannah Patneaude
Evie Skibicki + Dad and + (eventually) Mom

Coming up to camp Saturday Morning and returning home Saturday Night

Jesialis Perez
Teagan
Kahlen Wnuk + Mom
Dea Sula + Mom
