Girl Scouts: Cookie Stuff, Meeting Recap, International Fair Info

Hi everyone,

Just some loose ends to wrap up!

First:  Cookies!  I received additional cookie orders this week from Kahlen, Katie, Liliana, and Portia--did I miss anyone?   I will be getting those cookies from Girl Scouts tomorrow, and dropping them at Bonnie's garage that afternoon.  She shared her available times below.  (Just because she's home doesn't mean she's available for cookie pick up--we're trying to make this as easy as possible!)  It would also probably be a good idea to call before heading over for a cookie pick up.   If you are picking up an order and don't have Bonnie's number, let me know and I'll get that to you so you can reach out and connect on when you'll arrive.

    Sunday Night 600-900 pm
Tues night 400-500 pm or 730-900 pm
    Wed night 800-900 pm
Fri night 415-515 or 800-930 pm

Second:  The meeting!  So much fun again!  We played a little game of competitive cooking.  In groups the girls made a smoothie, and a salad, and they competed with the other groups to see whose cuisine reigned supreme!  The girls came up with some very neat ideas, but the important thing was that they tried new things, and experimented some beyond what they were usually used to.  It was also another great opportunity for them to see that they can do a lot for themselves, and are very capable young women.

Third:  International Faire--if you are one of the families going:  Michelle Persike (Kendra's mom) is our Troop Leader for the night, so look for her and Kendra when you get to Whitnall Middle School.  Also, just a reminder--try to arrive at 6:00 and not the 6:15 I had said originally.  I'm giving Michelle the display, flags, SWAPS, treat, passport stamps, and craft stuff, but she could use the extra hands to set up!

Fourth:  We didn't get to share Earth Day ideas at the meeting, so we'll do that inbetween times.  If you could send me ideas your scout discovered, I'll make a Google Doc with the info and the girls can share their impressions and votes for what we should do right there online.

That's all for now!

Girl Scouts: International Fair updates and a chance to earn your World Thinking Badge even if you can't go!

Hi everyone!

We got a LOT done today--thanks girls!  But there are still a few things left to do.

First though, a small update--I'd been telling everyone that we should arrive 6:15-ish for the event to start at 6:30.  It sounds more like we should be there at 6:00 to have everything set up.

And we have some good things to set up:

1)  We have a paper cutting craft--"Double Happiness" chinese paper symbols
2)  We have a treat--Chinese fruit jelly cups
3)  We have SWAPS ( Special Whatchamacallits Affectionately Pinned Somewhere ) of Chinese lucky money-attracting charms.
4)  We have flags for China, and Hong Kong, and Taiwan--the story of Chinese Girl scouts is interesting and confusing!
5)  We DO NOT have a display board though.  Our research team today had a hard time researching information about China and scouts in it.

Which is where the help from the girls comes from.  I've made a sign up page with research topics.  What we need before Friday is for girls to research these topics and share a 1-page google doc/slide/presentation with me to print up and put on our display board.  I'll do the gluing and arranging, but the girls need to do the research!

Here's the link to the research areas.  Anyone can do one, whether you're coming to the event or not.  And anyone that does gets counted as having earned the World Thinking Day 2018 badge.

Here's the link for that:

Thanks so much everyone!  This is going to be awesome!

Girl Scouts: Meeting Information

Hi everyone!

Just a quick reminder that there was homework for the meeting on Thursday:

The girls should try to find Earth Day activities going on in the area that our troop might enjoy joining in with.  I hope we can have a few things to talk about and the girls can have fun choosing something that would fit our troop well!

Also, if you haven't signed up yet, the meeting sign up is here:

It should be a good one--think "Iron Chef--Healthy!"

Girl Scouts: Cookie Information!

Hi everyone!

So, almost all the initial orders are picked up--Thanks!  Which brings us to the next two cookie processes:

1)  Money Due Dates!  50% of your amount due is due on March 2nd.  The next 50% is due March 9th.  Any money for additional sales is due 1 week after you pick up the additional cookies.  If you want to know what your current amount due is, let me know and I can look it up!

2)  How to get more cookies!

OK.  Here's the process.
Every Thursday I will submit an order to Scouts for all the additional orders I received from you guys in the previous week.
Every Friday, I will pick those up from Girl Scouts and drop them off at Bonnie's house.
After she has the cookies, Bonnie will have a window of time the "Cookie Cupboard" is open when you can pick up those extra orders.  She'll know whose orders are expected to be picked up, and she'll have receipt books ready.  (We're figuring out when that window is.)

3)  Gluten Free Cookies!  I picked them up and have them now.  So if you want some, I can get those to you and transferred over.  I currently have 17 packages, but can get more if needed.

Thanks everyone!  Happy cookies!  (And keep your eyes open for one more email tonight!)

Girl Scouts: Information for today!

Hi everyone!  (This is the first of a few emails for today.  Expect Cookie updates coming including when payment is due, and info on Gluten Free Cookies)

A couple quick notes for China prep. day:

1)  The girls can bring their Chromebooks if they want to use it for research.

2)  Are there a parent that would consider sticking around?  We had a couple girls want to join in, but I only have room for 6 passengers (plus me!) in my van to go on the Asian Grocery Store shopping field trip part of the party.  If there was a parent that wanted to stick around and could give a couple a girls a ride to Pacific Produce with the rest of us, that would be great!  (Otherwise, I'll think of an alternative to the store trip, don't worry!)

Here's who I'm expecting:
Evie
Kendra
Ellen
Quinn
Katie
Portia
Adrhia

Missing anyone?

Girl Scouts: Please read!

Hi everyone!

First:  There's still one spot open for the Wave Girl Scout event tomorrow, let me know if your scout is interested!

Second:  Sign up to pick up your cookies if you have an initial order!  I will plan to only be at home when there are people signed up.  So if you're not signed up by Saturday night, then you might be waiting a while, or not be able to get your cookies when you want them!  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a4fa5ad22a13-getyour

Third:  We can still use another scout or two sharing our Troop's presentation/booth about China and Girl Scouting in China.  Event is on Friday 2/23 from 6:30-8:30 (but we'll probably want to show up early to set up, so estimate 6:15-8:30) at Whitnall Middle School.  Please let me know if your scout can join in!

Fourth:  The preparation party for our International Fair booth is TUESDAY 2/20 from 12:00-3:00 at our house.  As I mentioned, we'll do some research, prepare a display, make a flag (or more), work on making lucky coin SWAPS, ( like these:  https://cf.ltkcdn.net/feng-shui/images/std/212546-400x286-fengshuicoins.jpg ) and take a field trip to the Asian grocery store to pick out a treat to share.  Anyone is welcome!  (And if any parents want to stay and help, you're welcome too!)

Thanks everyone!

Aleks

P.S.  Don't forget to sign up for the meeting on Thursday!  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a4fa5ad22a13-february

Wave Game--Open spot!

Hi,

I just had a scout find out she can't make it to the Wave game Girl Scout night.  So if anyone wants to join in but didn't get registered in time, great news!

The scout had signed up for the whole shebang--Game+Movie+Campout on the turf+Hat+Shirt+Patch+Popcorn+Pretzel, so that's all available.

If you're willing to pick your scout up, she wouldn't have to stay for the movie (done at midnight) or sleepover.  The game's kickoff is at 7:05 PM, so the game ought to be over by 10:00 PM.  But if she wants to camp out in a tent on the Wave's playing field she can,  then we'll bring her back home with us in the morning and you can pick her up at our house at 9:00 (or at UWM Panther Arena at 8:00 AM)

Let me know if she's in!  Even if you're not into Soccer, the Wave puts on a great show, and I bet she'll have a lot of fun!

Girl Scouts: Wave Night Packing List, and any tents?

Hi everyone!

Just a few notes for scouts sleeping over with the Wave Scout night Saturday/Sunday.

#1)  The soccer field is laid out over an ice hockey rink, so the ground gets COLD at night.  So, feel free to send along extra insulating layers for beneath your scout (extra blankets, air mattresses, foam cushions, etc.

#2)  Packing:  Pajamas, any toiletries, the usual stuff for a single overnight.  Nothing really special is needed.

#3)  Does anyone have an extra easy-to-pop-up tent that doesn't require any staking in the ground?  We can't pound anything in the ground for obvious reasons, but we can set up tents to sleep in on the field.  Our family has 2, but 1-2 more would be great to help spread the girls out a bit. (Kathleen and I will have one tent, and we'll spread the 7 girls out between 2-3 tents)

#4)  Food:  There are concessions at the game, and girls sleeping over will get a coupon for a small popcorn and soda.  Depending on how hungry a girl is, you can decide how much to send for food.  $10 would be more than enough, for sure.

#5)  Remember, meet at our house on Saturday at 5:00, and pick your scout up at our house at 9:00 on Sunday (unless you're dropping your scout off/picking them up at the game, but I think this is only Lauren so far, right?)

That's all for now!  See you Saturday!

Girl Scouts: Our busiest two weeks yet--Soccer, International Fair, Cookies, Meeting!

Hi everyone!

There is a LOT going on, so I'll try to keep this organized, and in roughly chronological order!

#1)  Milwaukee Wave Scout Night  THIS SATURDAY/SUNDAY!    Ok, so it's an evening game, and in the past, for Girl Scout nights they've wanted us to arrive at the stadium about an hour and a half before kick off.  I don't have anything official from them yet, but based on the past, let's assume we want to be there around 5:30.  What that means is that we'll meet up at our house at 5:00, so we can leave by 5:10.  (Michelle:  If you're taking Lauren to the stadium, then look for us there around 5:30) (Yvette, if you're just going to the game, then you can meet us at Panther arena at 5:30 too.  There'll be some waiting around, BUT since we didn't get to reserve T-Shirt sizes, we really want to be at the front of the line to pick!)

We'll plan to be back at our house on Sunday around 8:45.  (Michelle:  If you're picking Lauren up at the stadium on Sunday, then we'll be at the front door at 8:00)

Here's who I have signed up currently:
OVERNIGHT:
Megha M.
Lauren P.
Makenzie S.
Evie S
Jesialis P.
Nyela Z.

JUST GAME:
Eva M. (+1)

#2)  Cookie Pick Up  Sunday 2/18 at 3:30 we're picking up cookies for the troop from Tess Corners Fire Station #3 (S76 W17858 Janesville Rd. Muskego, WI 53150) .  Here's who I have signed up to help bring cookies from the drop off to my house:   Jeff P. w/ Trailer, JJ P. (Van), Kayla D. (Van), Lisa S. (Car), Rochelle R. (Van), Aleks S. (Van).  Is that still good?

Girls orders will be dropped off at my house, and I'll have them for people to pick up Sunday between 6:00-8:00, and then Monday throughout the day.  Sign up here to tell me when you'll be picking your order up:  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a4fa5ad22a13-getyour

#3)  Cookie Booths  There are still a lot of spots open if you want them!  Sign up here to get those cookie sales up!  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a4fa5ad22a13-2018

#4)  International Fair  OK, I need a bunch of help here.  A bunch.

First, our scouts need to get together and research and prepare information to share with other troops at the International Fair on Friday 2/23 6:30-8:30 at Whitnall Middle School.  I was thinking of having a get-together on Monday 2/19 or Tuesday 2/20 for the scouts to 1) Reseach Girl Scouting in China, 2)  Make a display about China, 3) Take a field trip to the Asian Grocery Store to choose a treat or snack to share, 4) Learn to make these as SWAPS for the girls at the Fair:  https://cf.ltkcdn.net/feng-shui/images/std/212546-400x286-fengshuicoins.jpg and 5)  Make a Chinese Flag (and maybe Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Singapore flag, as the girls will see, Scouting is COMPLICATED in China!) for the flag ceremony.

Which brings me to:  if we had a Girl Scouts in China:  Preparation for the International Fair get together during the day, who could do Monday 2/19, and who could do Tuesday 2/20, and who could do either one?  Let's say between 12:00-3:00?

Second:  Attendance at the International Fair.  I have Kendra and Carrie signed up to go so far.  They could sure use some friends!  I know several of the troops from Highland View are going, and there'll be a LOT of activities from other countries including France, Norway, India, and others from all around the globe!  Since every troop is making a SWAP, girls that go will come home with all sorts of cool pins! So please let me know if your scout can join them!  This also covers the 2018 World Thinking Day patch for girls that attend or help prepare materials.

Third:  Parent at the fair.  So, Kathleen has to work, and I'm Vice Chair of the Greendale Education Foundation and have to be at the "Cheers for Education Event" that night.  Of the scouts going, can any of the parents stay through the event and be our official Troop Leader for the night?  Please?

#5)  February Meeting  Our February Meeting is Thursday 2/22.  While the meeting "officially" starts at 3:30, remember that GMS Students should go there right after school so we can get moving.  The doors will be closed after our Highland View Scouts arrive.  We had the best meeting of the year in January (certainly our tastiest!) and we'll follow it up with a similar (but healthier!) meeting in February.

Pre-meeting homework:  In April, Earth Day is coming up.  We're looking for something the girls can go out and do for Earth Day, so if every girl can research local Earth Day vents going on around Greendale and Milwaukee, we'll share those ideas at the meeting and pick something to join in!  I know there are all sorts of clean-ups, and fun events going on--let's see what the girls can find!

WOW!  So much going on!

To sum up:  (TL;DR)
Sign up for a cookie pick up time
Sign up for any more cookie booths
Let me know if your scout can do a China Party 2/19 or 2/20
Try to see if your scout can join the International Fair 2/23 6:30-8:30 for World Thinking Day
Sign up for the February Meeting
Have your scout research activities for Earth Day

Thanks everyone,

Aleks

Girl Scouts: Please arrive a little early for Family Fitness Event today

Hi everyone!

If your scout is helping out with the Family Fitness Event at GHS today, it would be awesome if she could be there around 12:50.  The event starts at 1:00, so if we had a bit of a chance to organize and set up, it might make everything go more smoothly!

If you can't be there until 1:00, that's OK too.  But the extra few minutes would be super appreciated if possible!

Thanks!

Info for Scouts helping at "Family Fitness Day" at GHS on Sunday

Hi everyone!

Just a quick note for those of you helping at Family Fitness Day on Sunday.

It's 1:00-3:00 at Greendale High School
Our Scouts are running the "Make your own game" activity in the Wrestling room.  That's across from the pool on the lower level of GHS.

I have Makenzie, Kahlen, and Quinn signed up so far.  Anyone else would be welcome!

The girls' job would be basically, every 15-20 minutes, explain that the kids that come can use all the equipment down there to create their own game, and help the kids write the rules to the game either on paper or a whiteboard.  (We'd have the guides we used in our scout meeting there to help provide direction.)  Then they'd keep everyone moving and make sure the kids are playing the game they invented nicely.  It's our first time doing it, so we could adjust on the fly if we think of ways to make it work better!

Thanks so much for helping!  It's neat to give the girls chances to be leaders and you better believe it's recognized by teachers and the community at large.

Enjoy the snow day, and stay warm!

Aleks

Girl Scouts who completed the Bronze Project last June: Save the date!

Hi everyone,

In addition to all the great stuff that was part of the Bronze project (learning life skills, connecting with the community, making Greendale a safer place, etc.) one of the perks to completing our Girl Scout Bronze project was the invitation to the "Highest Awards in Scouting" celebration this year.

Girl Scouts has now set the date, and while formal invitations will be coming later (this is a big deal!) here are the details you can lock in for now.  It'll be the evening of May 21st (no specfic times announced yet) and Girl Scouts in our area that completed their Gold, Silver, or Bronze award in the previous year will be honored.  It'll be at the MATC Downtown Campus Cooley Theater.

The girls did a lot of work on this last year, whether it was meeting with the Police and Fire departments, researching bike safety in Wisconsin, contacting businesses for sponsorship and donations, and then spending their day at the safety event in Downtown Greendale, so they've earned this recognition.  I hope many of you can make it.

Girl Scouts: Vans/cars needed!

Hi everyone,

Our troop cookie pickup is on February 18th, starting at 3:30 at Tess Corners Fire Station #3 (Tess Corners  #3 S76 W17858 Janesville Road Muskego, Wisconsin 53150)

We have about 250 cases of cookies to pick up.  Which, according to the estimates I can find, should be enough to fill 3ish minivans.  (3.5 if the seats are in them, 3 with seats down or out.)

I only have one.

Before anyone can get the cookies they ordered, we have to get them from the fire department to a place for eveeryone to pick them up.  My thought at the moment, is to bring them all to my house first, distribute everyone's initial orders from there, and then take the extras and booth cookies to our troop cookie cupboard at Bonnie's house.

Can anyone help out from 3:30-4:30 on 2/18 hauling cookies from Hales Corners to our house?

Thanks a million million!

Aleks
