November 27th Meeting Recap and Notes

Hi everyone,

Thanks again for being a part of Girl Scouting. Special thanks to Michelle and Michelle (Lauren and Kendra's moms) for helping out today. Without them, the meeting could not have happened!

We had a lot of fun today tying our Girl Scout meeting in with the girls' "Long Ago" unit in school. We played some games that the kids back then would have played. If anyone is interested in more, those came ( loosely adapted) from "Kate Greenway's Book of Games" written by a woman who was born back in 1847. I'll include the rules and the games we played at the end of the email.

We also played some old fashioned outdoor games that the girls really seemed to have a lot of fun doing. We rolled hoops, just like the kids did long ago, and used sticks to play throw-and-catch with smaller hoops.

Finally we went very very very long ago and put on our scientific goggles to do some genuine paleontology. We went back 400 million years (that's pretty long ago indeed) but stayed close to home. We used real paleontologists' tools to clean off fossils from right here in WI. The girls seemed very excited to take them home. If anyone is curious, those fossils were called "pentamerus" and they were brachiopods common in Wisconsin during the silurian era 200-400 million years ago.

Here are the games we played, and the rules we used:

Cat in the Corner
The child who represents the cat stands in the middle. The other children stand around at fixed places. One of the outer children beckons to another and says: “Cat, cat, give me a drop of water!” and the two run to switch places. The “cat” tries to get into one of the spaces. If the cat succeeds, the child that lost a spot is the new “cat.”

Earth, Air, and Water
The children sit in a circle, and one sits in the middle with a handkerchief wrapped in a ball. The child in the middle tosses the handkerchief to one of the others, and says either “Earth,” “Air,” or “Water,” and starts counting to 10. The child that caught the handkerchief then has to say an animal (for earth), a fish (for water) or a bird (for air.) If they can’t do it in time, they move to the middle.

The Feather Game
The players sit close together and one of them takes a feather and blows it into the air. Then they try to keep it afloat just using their breath. The players must sit in their spot, and not stand or move about when keeping the feather in the air.

Hunt the Ring
A ring is threaded on a long string with the ends joined. The players stand in a circle, and the string goes around them. One child stands in the middle. The other children pass the ring from one child to another behind their backs, while the child in the middle tries to guess who has it. If the middle child guesses correctly, they switch places with whoever had the ring.

Who Loves Me?
One child leaves the area while everyone else writes something nice about that child on slips of paper. The first child comes into the room and tries to guess who wrote which slip. Play rotates until everyone gets a turn.

That's about all. I hope to see you at the Lighthouse on Saturday! (As always, if there's a girl that needs a ride, or watching before/after, let me know and we can make any arrangements!)

Nov 13th Meeting Recap and Notes

Wow!

It was amazing to see our budding rocket scientists, chemists, and electrical engineers get so into SCIENCE! I don't know if it was cooler to hear the girls shrieks when their rockets launched, or to hear them applaud when they got their electrical circuits to light up. And everyone loves getting messy making silly putty!

A huge huge huge thank you to all the parents today. Our co-leader Kelly, Sue (Katie's mom) and Jenette (Elli's mom) made the meeting a success! And let's also thank our Junior Girl Scout helper, Brooklyn (Elli's sister) for being a big help too!

A couple notes from the meeting, then a couple notes on upcoming stuff (IMPORTANT):

1) On the rockets--I have a few corks left behind. If the girls want to fly their rockets again, they'll need the black rubber stoppers, so let me know if yours is missing. The "rocket fuel" is just 5ml of water and an alka-seltzer tablet. Put the water in, drop in the alka-seltzer, then jam the cork on as tightly and as fast as you can. Set the rocket down, and watch it go!

2) On the electrical kit--there's not much to say. Just experiment and have fun. We had circuit diagrams for the girls to work on at the meeting, but a lot of the fun comes from experimenting and "discovering" something new that works. They have the basics down (electricity needs to go in a circle) the rest is imagination and experimentation.

3) On the silly putty--First, keep the putty in a sealed bag or container or it'll turn more rubbery than putty-ish. Second, the recipe is simply borax (a soap you can find in hardware stores and some grocery stores) plus water plus white school glue. Different mixes will make putties with different consistencies. Feel free to play around at home if you want some simple fun science time. If you can't find borax let me know. I got a king-size box, so I can sure share!

4) UPCOMING INFO: The Holiday Lights Kickoff is Wednesday. I have to look at a map to find a place for us to meet up there. I've never been before, so if someone can suggest a good meet-up point there, please let me know and I'll go with that and pass word out to everyone!

5) UPCOMING INFO: I still have a few of the invitations to the Victorian Holiday Celebration at the Lighthouse for families that weren't there, left early, , or accidentally left theirs behind today: Lia, Isabel, Kennedy, Adriana, and Kendra. I'll get them into BEE folders tomorrow. Keep an eye out for them.

6) UPCOMING INFO: Don't forget this Friday is the Highland View Around The World Festival. It should be a ton of fun again, so plan to come if you can!

That's about it for the moment. Thanks to all of you for letting your girls be a part of our Troop. Without the scouts, it would be pretty boring.

See you soon!

Aleks

November Information

It’s that time again!  Our next meeting is November 13th, same scout-time, same scout-channel!  It’s going to be a fun science-day for our scouts.  We’re going to do some chemistry (making silly putty!), some physics (making electric circuits!), and some biology (using some big-screen microscopes!).  It should be a fun time.

Here are the important upcoming dates to remember:

Nov. 13th and 29th, November meetings.

Nov. 16th, "Around the World" celebration at Highland View.  Not a Girl Scout Event per se, but it was a ton of fun last year, so keep it in mind this year!

Nov. 15th, Milwaukee Holiday Lights Kick-Off.  A parent sent this idea over, and it looks like it would be great to do as a group:  City's largest holiday party with specialty acts, guest of honor Santa Claus who will lead the countdown. Then with a flip of the switch he'll light the night with thousands of lights and a thrilling fireworks display. Afterward, free Jingle Bus rides will take families past all the festive lights.  5:45 pm  Intro  & 6:00 pm  Kick-off, Pere Marquette Park

Nov. 24th, “Green Corners” Girl Scout movie Day. Join other Girl Scouts from Hales Corners, Greendale, and Greenfield at the Franklin Showtime Cinemas to watch either Wreck it Ralph or Rise of the Guardians at 10:00. Tickets are $5.00, or if you want popcorn and a soda with it there’s a $10.25 bundle. (The ticket price may change. I’m waiting to hear the final word from the Service Area folks.)

AFTER Nov. 17th, Pick up any Nut Orders you placed. Call me to let me know when. 414-423-1224, or email kwaterk1978@yahoo.com

BEFORE Nov. 28th, Turn in your money for any nuts you ordered.

Dec. 1st, Homemade Holiday Open House at the Wehr Nature Center: “This year, enjoy a homemade holiday! Bring your kids, grandkids, nieces and nephews, the neighborhood gang or scout group to Wehr for this holiday open house. Your children will enjoy creating homemade treasures for the special people in their lives. Your child's unique gifts will be created from natural and reusable objects.” $6.00 Admission includes three projects—pencil holders, tree ornaments, cookie coasters, etc.

October 25th Meeting Notes and Announcements

Hi everyone!

Thanks for letting your girls be a part today.  We all had a lot of fun.

Our meeting had two themes:

1)  Birthdays!  Juliette "Daisy" Lowe, the founder of Girl Scouting, has her birthday October 31st.  To celebrate, we decorated a beautiful bottle to give as a birthday present to someone we love.  We also made a giant birthday card, showing her our favorite parts of being a Girl Scout.

2)  Making the World a Better Place.  Our pink Daisy Petal represents the Girl Scout's promise to "Make the World a Better Place."  We talked about, came up with ideas about, and drew pictures of what we could do to make the world a better place.  We also read and talked about a "Flower Friends" story where the Flower Friends worked on making the world a better place.  Finally we heard a story about Martin Luther King Jr. who definitely made the world a better place.

A couple announcements:

1)  I only have 5 Nut Order forms turned in.  They make great gifts, and are priced pretty reasonably--within the same ballpark similar products sell for at the grocery store--and these really do help the Troop out.  And of course, if you skip the Nut Sale, I'll really have to hound you when Cookie time rolls around! :)

2)  STEMfest special sessions seem to be filled up.  However, if you want to join us, everything else at Discovery World is wide open to Girl Scouts Friday and Saturday.  Admission is free for Scouts and their families, so come right along.  Parking might be tough, so carpooling is encouraged.

3)  I don't have Health Information/Emergency Contact Cards from some of you.  I'm going to the Girl Scout Headquarters tomorrow, and I'll pick some up.  I'll send them home with the girls who need them--so if you see a card in the BEE folder, please fill it out and send it back.  It's important for us to make sure we have information on record about allergies, emergency contacts, and the like.  We've not had any emergencies so far, and with any luck at all it'll stay that way forever, but "it's better to have it and not need it,", as they say.
Thanks again, and have a great weekend!

Great October everyone!

What a busy, but fun October!

The UWM Women's Soccer Girl Scout Day was great fun.  The weather was perfect, and even though our UWM Panthers didn't get the win, everyone had a lot of fun.

Just a few reminders:

1)  The first of our "Last Thursday" meetings is this Thursday (Oct. 25th) right after school, and goes to 5:00.  We'll be doing some painting, so dress appropriately.

2)  Nut order forms are due October 26th.  Feel free to turn them in at the meeting on the 25th.  Bring in the permission slip too if you haven't filled it out yet.

And, November dates to remember:

1)  Nov. 2nd and 3rd, STEMfest at Discovery World.  Science, Technology, Engineering and Math fest.  We'll go both days, but the programs repeat so pick one day to go.  You only need to be registered if you want to do any of the special programs there (squishy circuits, carbonation chemistry, the Tesla electric show).   Let me know which day you want to go, and which programs you want to register for and I'll get it all set for you.  The program times and descriptions are here:  https://www.gswise.org/events-and-activities/stemfest.aspx

2)  Nov. 13th and 29th, November meetings.

3)  Nov. 16th, "Around the World" celebration at Highland View.  Not a Girl Scout Event per se, but it was a ton of fun last year, so keep it in mind this year!

4)  Nov. Thursday, Nov 15th, 5:45 pm  Intro  & 6:00 pm  Kick-off, Pere Marquette Park

Mid October Announcements

First of all, thanks to everyone that came out to the Jungle Explorer Night at the Domes.  It sure was fun.  It was cool to see another Girl Scout Troop there too!

Second, our next meeting will be Oct. 25th, the last Thursday this month.  Meetings go until 5:00, but if a girl needs to leave early, they certainly can!  It's going to be tough to top last month (making those happiness necklaces was a huge hit!) but I have some ideas!  We may do some painting, so keep that in mind when picking clothes for the day.

Third,  I sent Nut Sale information home with the girls on Friday.  If you didn't get it, let me know and I'll send out a new packet.  The important things to know right away are:

  • Your girl must be registered to participate in the nut sale.
  • You have to sign the permission form and get it back to me at some point.
  • You don't need to collect money or pay for anything until the week after you pick up your order (Nov. 17th pickup).
  • The timeline is Oct. 12--start selling.  Oct. 26--turn in forms.  Nov. 17th--pick up order.  Nov. 28th--money due.

Fourth, some shameless beggary: As far as I can see, no one has signed up to help out at the meeting on the 25th.  The Troop is big enough that I really need the extra hands, so if anyone at all can spend the time after school that Thursday to help out, I would really really REALLY appreciate it.

Fifth, I still have some tickets available for the UWM Women's Soccer Team Girl Scout Day.  $3.00 gets the ticket, a patch, a hot dog, and soda.  The game is this Sunday (21st) at 1:00 at UWM's, Engelmann field.  If you're interested, let me know.  If your girl needs a ride, or just wants to go with the group, let me know too and we can totally arrange it!

Sixth, don't forget the Halloween Haunt this Friday.  If you are using the tickets I got, remember to show up at 7:00 to watch the magician while we wait for our walk at 7:33.  Speaking of that, one parent doesn't need her ticket, so if you know someone that wants to join in, I have a spare!

September Meeting Recap and Announcements

Hello again!

We had a great September meeting!

We:

Chose a troop name (Rock Star Girls)
Made up a troop cheer
Started planning our park clean-up
Made posters for our park clean-up

Everyone seemed to have a good time, and are excited about our next meeting.

Announcements for parents:

#1) Since we started planning our park clean-up, we'll have to pick a time for it. It turns out there's no soccer game on the 13th, so I think that makes it a great day for the park clean-up.  We can roll the time a bit earlier, to 1:00, and with luck have some great sun and weather!

#2) Thanks to everyone who has signed up to be a helper volunteer or a snack helper this year! I really appreciate it. If you're still interested, I think there are snack spots open on the sign up page that's linked to the website. ( http://www.greendaledaisies.blogspot.com )

#3) Remember our next meeting is the second Tuesday of October, which is next Tuesday! As always, I'll send home a sheet on Monday.

Thanks, and see you soon!

Mid September Announcements and Events!

I hope everyone had a great weekend. For those of you at Bug Day: wasn't it just perfect weather? I can't believe how much the girls enjoyed digging for bugs! if I didn't see you there (it got crowded!) I did get a couple extra insect fun badges if you need. I also got a copy of the Bug Whisperer's DVD, parts of which may make it into a Girl Scout meeting down the road. I'll work on getting some of the fantastic pictures up here soon.

On to the information:

#1) For Adults who joined Girl Scouts and can volunteer at meetings, the link with the background check application and password is:
https://www.gswise.org/Volunteers/Volunteer-Applications.aspx While it says you may not get your results back for two weeks, there's a new procedure this year that lets the school organizer give you the green light while your background check is pending. Coincidentally, I just finished my training for school organizer. So that shouldn't be a problem.

#2) I'm going to head to the Wehr center Wednesday to pick up tickets for the Halloween Haunt, if any are still available. They went on sale to the general public today (17th.) It comes HIGHLY recommended. It's October 18th through the 20th, Thursday through Saturday, 6:30-8:00 PM. Tickets are $7.00, parking for that is free. If you would like me to pick up extra tickets for you let me know. I plan on picking up tickets for the Saturday night, but if there's a better night, any of the three would work for our family. http://county.milwaukee.gov/HaloweenHaunts11368.htm

#3) Harvest Fest. Several of you are already planning on going to Harvest Fest at State Fair and suggested we make it a Girl Scout fun trip, which sounds like an awesome idea! It's Sept. 28th-30th. No reservations required. We'd just need to coordinate a date and time!
http://www.wistatefair.com/harvest_fair/attractions/attractions.html

#4) Jungle Adventure at the Domes. Friday October 12th 6:30. Explore the Rainforest Dome with just your flashlight! This also sounds AMAZING! There'll be a light show at the end of the night, which, if you haven't seen it, is worth the trip in and of itself. You'll get to make a sundae with ingredients from the rainforest, learn about all the things we find and use from the rainforest, and meet rainforest birds too! the other domes will also be open for nighttime exploration. http://county.milwaukee.gov/RainforestNight13118.htm

So, mark your calendars! And let me know where and when to expect you. We'll talk at the meeting too!

Just a quick update

Just a really quick update.

First, I put pictures up in the gallery of the girls at the Rennaissance Faire on Scout Day and working on the Greendale Community Garden. Enjoy!

Second, I'm starting work on scheduling for next year. Our first Girl Scout meeting will be the usual time and place: the last Wednesday of the month with school, in Mrs. Bushman's room. I will have a parents (new and old!) meeting the second Wednesday of the school year after school to get folks registered and introduce new parents to the group. (By my calculations that's September 12th.) Unless I hear otherwise, I'll actually have 2 meetings that day, one right after school, and one later in the evening. You don't have to go to both--I just want to make sure as many parents have the chance to go as possible. I'll send home information in the BEE folders the first couple days of school.

I'm also looking at events and fun things to do throughout the year. I'd like to have a tentative schedule of events ready early on. So, if you have ideas, send them over, and we'll work them in!

In September a couple of things are already pretty ready-to-go:

Sept 16th (Sunday) is BUG DAY at Wehr Nature center. That's 1:00, and when we've gone in the past it's been pretty fun. $2.00 per person, $3.00 parking. There'll be a bug zoo, "The Insect Whisperer," insect crafts, and even a chance to EAT BUGS!

The second Thursday of the month, Sept 13th, has a Beach Clean Up at Bay View Park. I thought this would be a fun way to get the girls involved in a service event--ESPECIALLY if we go to Dairy Queen, or someplace fun afterwards. It's from 6:30-8:00 that Thursday evening (after soccer practice!) Here's the website for more information: http://www.bayviewneighborhood.org/clean-ups

That ought to be enough for September, so we'll start looking ahead to October! I know there's a Girl Scout Day at the "How To Train Your Dragon" live extravaganza, so we might put that on the calendar. I'll get in touch with Girl Scouts to get the details!

See you all soon!

Aleks

End-of-July and Beginning-of-August Announcements!

Hi again!

A few things are going on in the near future that I wanted to stay on top of:

1) Tomorrow is our next playground-passport day. We'll be hitting the Greedale Community Center Playground. It's the one behind the tennis courts off of 76th street south of Grange. 5:30, as usual. If history is a guide, we'll stay until late, so feel free to come by any time!

2) August 4th is the Laura Ingalls Wilder day at Old World Wisconsin:

"Come for a day the whole family will enjoy. In addition to activities straight from the pages of the "Little House" books, you can experience draft horse power, see a steam threshing machine and the work done by turn-of-the-20th-century gasoline engines such as grain grinding or corn shelling. Try your hand at making rope or watch our special guests, the SeatWeavers' Guild, as they share the nearly lost art and craft of chair caning and chair seat weaving. Join the look-alike pageant, dressed up as Mary, Laura, Carrie, Grace, Almanzo or naughty Willie and Nellie. You're also welcome to help with the chores and games Laura and her family experienced"

Ticket Info:
Adults $16; children (5-17) $9 (children under 5 are free); students and senior citizens (65 and over) $14; family (two adults and two or more dependent children 5-17) $43. Fees include an all-day tram transportation pass.

3) (This one's not really a girl scout thing, just something fun for friends.) On August 7th (a Tuesday) we're heading to Six Flags Great America to use the ticket Evie got for a reading event at school. It might be fun if there was a bunch there, so if anyone wants to join us, let me know! We can figure out car pool or ride arrangements too if a girl wants to go but some parents can't.

4) Our Troop gets to tend (and harvest!) the community garden behind the high school from August 9th through the 18th. Are there days and times that people would like to sign up to water/weed/harvest?

5) Keep the Renaissance Faire on your calendar for the 18th of August! We'll meet up at our house at 11:00, and carpool out there and have a day of fun. As always, if there's a girl that wants to go, but parents can't, we can definitely arrange rides! We'll buy tickets when we get there to get the scouting discount. Only one member of the group has to be in "scouting uniform" so I'll wear mine and have us covered. If girls want to wear princess dresses or scouting gear that's a-ok too, but certainly not required!

6) If you haven't registered for next year yet, I can send you a form to fill out, or I can bring registration forms to any event you want to meet at, or you can stop by our house and pick one up too--just let me know when to expect you (423-1224).

I think that's all for now! See you at the Community Center Playground tomorrow!

July Updates and Thanks!

Thanks to everyone who marched in the parade today! The girls were great, even in the heat.

I (finally) got some pictures from the camp-out up in the picture gallery at the right so check them out if you want.

There's not a lot of Girl Scout stuff lined up for July. On the 29th there's the Firefly Walk at the Botanical Gardens 6:00 PM-8:00. I've never done that one but I understand it's a lot like the fairy Garden party, which the girls seemed to really enjoy.

I don't know if any of you have seen the Greendale Playground Passport that the library and Ferch's are sponsoring. It's a 'quest' to play at all 11 of Greendale's playgrounds this summer. You can pick up a passport at the Library or at Ferch's downtown greendale location, then visit all 11 playgrounds in Greendale, turn in your passport, to be entered in a drawing for a prize. I thought this might be nice to do with friends too. Starting next week, we'll probably hit them on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting from the top of the list down, around 5:30 if that works for a lot of you?

Here's the list:

Daffodil Park (behind Ferch's)
Jaycee Park (by the end of BroadStreet by the High School)
Lions Park (Edgehill and Eaton ?)
Greendale Community Center (North of Root River on 76th Street, by the Tennis Courts)
Ambruster Site (Montgomery and 68th)
Canterbury School
College Park School
Across from College Park School
Highland View School
St. Alphonsus School
Scout Lake Park

Finally, we have a couple pretty fun sounding August events:

FIRST, the weekend of August 18th and 19th is Bristol Renaissance Faire's Scout-Days, with discounted tickets for scouts and their families. I know Evie loves loves loves it, and it sounds like a lot of other girls would enjoy it too, so if there are any families that can either surely do, or surely NOT do one of those days, let me know know so we can schedule it out.

SECOND, Laura Ingalls Wilder Days are August 4th at old World Wisconsin. Check out the website here:
http://oldworldwisconsin.wisconsinhistory.org/Events/EventDetail/Event2399.aspx

You're also welcome to help with the chores and games Laura and her family experienced."

Adults $16; children (5-17) $9 (children under 5 are free); students and senior citizens (65 and over) $14; family (two adults and two or more dependent children 5-17) $43. Fees include an all-day tram transportation pass.

THIRD, We are still signed up to work in the Greendale Community Garden the week ending August 18th. I haven't heard anything from Heidi though, so I don't know exactly what the details are, but just keep in mind I may call on the girls to help weed and water, and maybe even bring home some of the harvest--based on your schedules that week, of course.

I think that's all,

Thanks again--and keep cool!

April Updates

Thanks for a great April meeting everyone! Today we worked on our Daisy value of sisterhood. We talked about, and drew pictures of how we can be good sisters to all the other girls, and shared our ideas with the group. The girls had some great ideas, and were so good at presenting them! We also made necklaces for each other--each girl made a piece for every other girl's necklace. The girls figured out that their necklaces were so long because they had so many friends!

I made a Daisy Scout word search for the girls. Some took them home, and some didn't. If your girl left hers behind, I put a copy up on the website here. You can just click the link on the left.

It looks like we’re coming up to the end of the school year, but we’ll keep on having Daisy fun all summer long.

A few other announcements:

Don't forget the College Park Brownie's meeting we were invited to tomorrow! If you didn’t RSVP, but still want to go, that’s ok. I talked to the leader and she’ll be ready if a few unexpected girls show up! (April 26th, 6:30-7:15)

Tiki and Emmi's Dad mentioned that he could schedule us a day to swim at the Village Club this summer. If there are dates that definitely DON'T work, let me know so we can schedule around that!

Backyard Camping. I thought it might be neat to do a backyard campout with the girls. We can set up tents in our yard, have campfires, sleep-out, and even hike through the nature center next door--all the while having a comfy, clean house (and bathrooms!) to retreat to if things got cold, scary, or too uncomfortable for any of the girls. I’m thinking of scheduling this around the Fairy Tea Party at the Botanical Garden on June 24th. That’ll give us something to do, and when we’re done with the fairies in the park, we can come back and roast marshmallows/s’mores and hit the tents. Let me know if that will work for you.

I haven’t heard back from the folks in charge of the Village 4th of July Parade about our girls getting a chance to march in it,but it definitely sounds like this is something we’ll be able to do. So if you can, keep that available!

There are a few events coming up in the near future to put on our schedules, but before getting to that: I really really REALLY want to hear from you about ideas and things to do over summer. I'd like to get the girls together for some fun outdoors stuff--put the "scout" in Girl Scout--so let me know your ideas!

Thanks for a Great March Meeting!

Thanks for another great meeting everyone!

The girls all seemed to have fun as we learned about the Girl Scout Promise and made our first couple Daisy Flower Petals. Congratulations to Miss Kelly's team for winning the Girl Scout Promise Puzzle race! Check out the pictures in the picture gallery.

Inside the Girl scout Law book I made for the girls you'll find several felt pieces--2 white ovals, a white circle, a dark green oval, a light green oval, and a blue circle. The white pieces are backgrounds for the colored pieces to start assembling the Daisy Scout flower on their tunics.

A few notes on the felt flower pieces:
1) There will ultimately be ten petals around the blue "Promise Center," so make sure there's enough room.
2) You can sew them on, or, I have some adhesive tabs that claim to bond fabrics if you would rather just stick them on the tunic.
3) I noticed some of the girls' cutting got a little ragged. If your Scout, (or you!) would like more felt to try again, I have extra. Daisy Flower Petal Iron-On patches are also available at the Girl Scout store, or on-line as another option.
4) A few petals and blue flower centers were left behind in the meeting room. As I mentioned above, I have extra felt if anyone needs.

The girls also seemed to really enjoy getting their badges. As far as putting the badges on your tunics, the World Thinking Day badge can go on the front of the tunic, on the bottom panel--below the pocket line. The rest of the badges (Winter Fun, Scout Skate) can go anywhere on the back. The 100th Anniversary Patch from the event at the Bradley Center also goes on the back of the tunic. The flower petal and promise center patches (felt cut-outs) go on the front of the tunic, in the center.

To get started on our next flower petal, the girls do have some homework, but it should be fun. I sent home a sheet for them to draw a picture of a time when they acted like a sister (a good sister!) to another Girl Scout. If they would like, they'll get a chance to share what they did at the next meeting.

Finally, I sent home the invitation from the College Park Brownie troop for our girls to join their April meeting. It sounds like it will be fun, so RSVP to Holly at the number or email address on the invitation sheet. If an invitation didn't make it home with you, here are the details: Thursday April 26th 6:30-7:15 with Brownie Troop 1165. It will be in the College Park Elementary School cafeteria. Contact me for Holly's information to RSVP.

Thanks again, have a great night!

March Announcements

And there are a lot of them!

First of all: thanks to all the folks who came to the Girl Scout 100th Anniversary event at the bradley Center. I had some pictures, so I put them up at the website. If anyone else has any, send them over, and I'll put them up too!

Second: we have our meeting next week Wednesday, so I'll be sending a slip home in the girls' BEE folders this Wednesday. I'll also include the event information from this post. At the meeting we're going to work a lot on the Girl Scout Promise, so if your girl wants to practice ahead-of-time, that'd be great.

On my honor, I will try:
To serve God and my country,
To help people at all times,
And to live by the Girl Scout Law.

Third: The College Park 3rd grade Brownies have asked us to help them with their Bridge-to-Juniors project. They asked if our girls could join them at their April meeting (April 26th, 6:30-7:15) so our Girls can see how fun "Big Girl" Girl Scout meetings are. I think that'll be great, so put it on your calendars!

Fourth: Tiki and Emmi's Dad mentioned that he could schedule us a day to swim at the Village Club this summer. If there are dates that definitely DON'T work, let me know so we can schedule around that!

Fifth: Backyard Camping. Like the Village Club swim, let me know any black-out dates that WON'T work, and we'll schedule around that.

Sixth: I'm talking to the folks in charge of the Village 4th of July Parade about our girls getting a chance to march in it, so if you can, keep that available!

Finally, there are a handful of fun things coming up, here's a quick breakdown:

Get the spring juices flowing at Maple Sugar Days! Your whole family will hike with a naturalist guide to the sugarbush to see tapped sugar maples and taste fresh sap as it drips from the trees. Next, you'll visit an old-time sugarin' camp and hear stories of how the old-timers produced maple syrup and sugar – but you may be distracted from the stories by the oh-so-sweet aroma of clear maple sap boiling down to rich, dark maple syrup!

Hands-on Activities (for kids and kids at heart)
To get a real feel for the "maple-sugarin' game," use a hand drill on a log, try Native-American methods of boiling sap without the benefit of metal pans, and make a craft. For a sweet reward, sample real maple syrup on a pancake at this first ritual of spring.

The program begins with a short hike to the sugarbush and a visit with an old-time sugar maker. The first tour starts at 1 p.m.; the last tour, 4 p.m. Come prepared to walk on wood-chipped trails through the woodland, dress in layers, and dress to keep your feet warm.

Event Listing and Map for the 100th Anniversary Event

Here's the website listing all the activities going on at the Rock the Ice event. There are a lot. We may want to plan ahead-of-time what looks the most fun for the girls.

https://www.gswise.org/Documents/PDF-documents/2012/Rock-the-Ice-Event-Map.aspx

Additional "World Thinking Day" Activities

If anyone wants to do more World Thinking Day activities with their girls, here's the list that Girl Scouts provided for Daisies.

World Thinking Day 2012 Activities for Daisies

•Make creative “Switch-me-off” reminder notes and stick them on the light switches, electric appliances and water taps in your house, school or Girl Scout meeting place.

•Take a nature walk with you Daisy friends, and try to remember all the things you see on the walk. What are their shapes, sizes, colors and textures (how do they feel?) Afterwards, share with your friends what you saw.

•Think of different ways to save water at your house and school. Draw a picture of them or make a list to display at your school, home or Girl Scout meeting place.

•Learn about an endangered species in your area. Where does it live? What does it eat? What animals eat it? What are its habits? Why is it threatened with extinction? What can we do to help? Draw a picture or present a skit about what the environment would be like if that species goes extinct.

•Pick a country that you would like to visit some day. With an adult’s help, learn about the county’s national tree, flower, bird and animal. Then try to find some pictures showing nature in that country and ways people are working to protect their natural environment.

•Look around the room you are in and try to find all the things that came from nature. For example, a wooden table was made from a tree or the glass window came from sand. With your Daisy friends, make a collage showing the links between the objects in the room and the natural world from where they came.

100th Anniversary Brochure and Schedule

For those families going to the 100th Girl Scout Anniversary Rock the Ice event, here's the information from Girl Scouts. You can click on the small images here to see them full-size. You can also check out their website at www.gswise.org .

Another Great Girl Scout Time!

What a great time today! We worked on projects for the Girl Scouts world-wide "World Thinking Day 2012". We talked about how we're connected to nature, and made a collage of the ways we are connected to the world. We also listened to and discussed a story about using resources wisely. All of this helped us earn our "World Thinking Day 2012" badge to wear proudly! (We'll give them out next meeting.)

I didn't get to giving out the fun patches for the girls who went to the Wehr Nature Center event or the Petit Center this meeting, so next meeting we'll have to have an entire patch ceremony.
Other than the 100th anniversary event, there's not a whole lot going on in March, so if you know of anything the girls would enjoy, please share! Spring is in the air, and if we keep getting nice weather like this, it could be a great month for the girls to do something together.

There are a handful of events in April. Unfortunately when I checked the registration deadline for the Little House on the Prairie Days, they had been closed since November. The rest of the events don't have to worry about registration deadlines until April 10th at the earliest, and most don't require pre-registration at all. If there are any that really jump out at you, let me know, and we'll make those a priority.

Thanks again,

Aleks

Girl Scout 100th Anniversary Celebration

Hello again!

First, thanks to the families that joined us at the Petit Center tonight. It looked like everyone was having some fun. (And not falling too much either!)

Second, the big news out of Girl Scout HQ is the 100th anniversary celebration, "Rock the Ice" event Saturday March 10th. Our girls were lucky to start in Girl Scouts just as Girl Scouting is turning 100 years old. In Milwaukee they're holding a big event to commemorate the occasion at the Bradley Center. ( https://www.gswise.org/Events-and-Activities/100th-Anniversary-Activities/Rock-the-Ice.aspx ). We need to register before February 11th, and if the people going want to be seated together, we need to register together. There's a lot more information at the link above.

Registration is $15.00 per person, but includes a 100th anniversary backpack and patch for the girls, and admission to the Milwaukee Admirals vs. Rockford Ice Hogs hockey game too. Events will be running from 2:30 all the way until the Hockey Game which starts at 7:00.

If you're interested in going and want to get registered, tell me ASAP.

As always, appreciatively yours,

Aleks

A couple quick updates

Thanks to everyone who brought their girls to Winterfest at the Wehr center! It sounds like the girls had a good time. I have "Winter Fun" badges for the girls that were there. I'll bring them to the next meeting.

1) After talking to the parents whose girls are in the dance class on Wednesdays, it turns out there's only one more dance class conflict, so we'll keep the schedule the same--the last Wednesday of the month that school is in session.

2) The Owl Prowl at the Todd Wehr center, that was listed on the schedule for Saturday 7-9:00 P.M. is actually Friday (2/3) 7-9:00 P.M. After talking to the folks at Wehr, it sounds like the event is geared more towards older kids, so we may want to sit this one out.

3) As always, if anyone has ideas for things for the girls to do together, let me know and I'll pass word along. The girls are all great friends, and enjoy the outings!

Thanks again,

Aleks Skibicki

Thanks and a couple announcements/questions

First of all, thanks to everyone for a great meeting today. It was messy, but I think everyone had fun!

Second, it sounds like the consensus is to go with the Wehr Center event on Sunday and Ice Skating on 2/2. So, please everyone let me know who wants to attend each! On Sunday, based on what I've heard so far, a start time around 12:30 would work well. As always, parents can come, or we can bring some girls together. Kathleen and I have two cars available, we could handle a few!

Third, we now have 4 girls (out of 18, so almost a quarter!) that have dance on Wednesdays and need to get ready and leave early. To make things easier and more inclusive for all the girls, I'd like to talk about moving the meeting day to Mondays. I'll check the school calendar to make sure it isn't a major conflict, but would anyone have trouble if we switched the meeting to the last Monday that school is in session each month?

Thanks for all your input!

Aleks

All sorts of news!

I have all sorts of news for you.

First: We're official! We have a troop number now (#8035) hooray! That also means that everyone who turned in paperwork is also registered and officially a Girl Scout. I do have the rest of the paperwork in my own hands now, so if you didn't do the registration paperwork, I'll have it at the meeting on Wednesday for you to fill out. I'll also have information on Daisy Scout smocks patches and vests, Girl Scout Guides, and how to get them if you want them.

Second: There are a lot of events listed on the schedule for the next couple weeks. Let me know how you feel about them. The big days are:
Sunday when we can choose between Winterfest at the Wehr Center, and a Jazz concert at the Pabst auditorium. I don't need to preregister for either of these so it's not incredibly pressing to make a decision immediately.
And Thursday when we can choose between Girl Scout day at the Pleasant Prairie RecPlex, and Girl Scout Ice-Skating day the the Petit Center. We ought to choose between these as quickly as we can since I'd need to register us.
I'll mention these when you pick your girl up from the meeting Wednesday too.

Third: A couple parents have asked about selling Girl Scout cookies. We're going to be sitting this year's sale out. But we'll be in it next year, so get your cookie-eating muscles ready!

Once again, thanks for being a part of Girl Scouts! We'll see you Wednesday!

Aleks
