Girl Scouts: Scouting never stops!

Hi everyone!

Just a few updates to kick off 2017 and wrap up 2016:

1)  January Meeting sign up!  We're starting a whole new badge and re-visiting the details for our Bronze Project in spring, the Bike Safety Clinic.  The letters the girls wrote are all typed up, now every girl will get one, and we'll all sign them and start to try to get some of the materials and set up the meetings to get everything we need for the event.

2)  Speaking of the Bronze Award Bike Safety Clinic, in case your scout didn't tell you: we have a date!  The Village of Greendale, along with the Greendale Education Foundation have offered us the use of downtown Broad Street from 4:00-8:00 on June 9th.  (And before hand to get all set up!) We'll have our clinic in conjunction with the GEF's "First Day of Summer" event in Downtown Greendale that day.  There'll be vendors, and an outdoor movie that night, so there'll be a good draw for community members!

3)  Here's who I have signed up for the UWM Women's Basketball Girl Scout Game December 31st:

Jesialis P. (3)
Lara E. (3)
Dea S. (3)
Kendra P. (4)
Bryn R. (3)

The tickets will be at Will Call (along with patches and food vouchers) under Jen Richards' name.  I could maybe still add someone if you want to go, but I would have to know right away!

That's about all for the moment!  See you next year!

Girl Scouts: Cookie Kick Off Party 2017!

Hi everyone!

It's almost that time again--cookie time!

And, as we've done for the last few years, we're holding the Greendale Girl Scouts Cookie Kick Off Party at Highland View!

It's January 11th, 2017, and for those of you new to the troop, it's a night of fun, and cookies, and games, and cookies, and prizes, and cookies.  The girls always enjoy it a lot, and gets them ready for Girl Scout Cookie Time.

This year the girls are old enough to help out too, and I'm hoping to have girls help staff the various stations throughout the night.  The sign up link is below.  There's no charge, but please have your scout sign up to help with the event for a short shift during the night.

Thanks so much!  Sign up here:

Have a great night and stay warm!

Girl Scouts: Meeting Recap and More!

Hi everyone!

Just a couple quick notes from last week and for next week:

1)  We had a great meeting!  We made something for our families, something for ourselves, something for outside the house, and something to share (maybe?)

To wrap up the year we did a bunch of activities and tied them in to our Girl Scout Laws.  To make the world a better place, and to be considerate and caring, we made strings of popcorn, cereal and cranberries for the birds and animals outside in wintertime.  To be friendly and helpful we made colonial-era air-fresheners from cloves and oranges.  To wrap up our Health and Fitness badge, we made some very healthy "Rainbow Soup" where each girl got to pick her own ingredients--I expect to hear how they tasted when we get back together again in January! Finally, we decorated three cookies, and got to decide if we were sharing them (friendly and helpful!) or not....

2)  For the girls (and parents, you can help!) going to the mandatory Washington DC trip meetings the next two Tuesdays, here's a little homework!  The girls' job, while the parents are going over safety guidelines, and filling in health cards, etc., will be to put together the itinerary for what to do when we're on the trip and pick out which area each girl will become an "expert" in. Between now and then, f you could have your scout get some ideas of things to do or places to go in Washington DC, that would be great.  The group meeting on the 13th will set the itinerary for the first half of the trip, and the group meeting on the 20th will set the second half.

For each area or location we visit, we should have at least one girl dedicated to being an "expert" on that location.  They don't need to be an expert before the meetings these next two weeks, but the experts at each area should set to work becoming an expert ASAP, because some of the areas need us to reserve tickets/space very early and:

Experts will be in charge of:
1)  Knowing what we need to do to go to that site:
Do we need tickets?
If so, when and how do we get them?
Know directions for the trip.
How much does it cost?
How long will we need there?
What physical restrictions will we have to take into account? (For example, there are a lot of stairs in the Washington Munument.)
How will we get there from our hotel?
2)  Teaching the rest of us noteworthy things about that site:
Important exhibits?
History of the site (if it's a monument, or memorial for example.)
Why this site is important to our nation.
Connections to girls and Girl Scouts.

Thanks so much everyone, see you soon!

Girl Scouts: Three December Things to Remember

Hi everyone!

Just a couple quick December notes:

1)  Our first December Highland View meeting is tomorrow.  Here's who I have signed up.  Please make sure your teacher knows if your scout is going to the meeting after school instead of your regular dismissal (pick up, bus, walk, etc.)

5th Grade Highland View
Samantha S.
Lia S.
Kahlen W.
Makenzie S.
Alyssa S.

4th Grade Highland View
Eva M.
Elena E.
Quinn S.
Alison D.

Other Schools:
Adrhia F-M.
Teagan A.
Katie B.

2)  Just a quick reminder to sign up for one of the mandatory Washington DC Trip Meetings 12/13 or 12/20 if you/your scout was interested in going. If some of our new 4th Grade scouts are interested in going to Washington DC, please let me know.  Girl Scout rules require scouts to be finished with 5th grade for out-of-state trips, so we'll put something together for those scouts next year when they wrap up 5th grade!  (We'll even make sure any cookie money from cookies they sell this year goes to their trip, to make sure everything is fair and square!)

Here's the page for the meeting sign up:

3)  Milwaukee Wave Scout Night event:  If your scout was in the sleepover, and didn't get a Wave Hat or Wave Scout Night Patch, please let me know.  I did get some extras from the Wave so we can make sure everyone got theirs!

Bonus #4)   Basketball!  Is anyone else interested in the 12/31 UWM Women's basketball game Girl Scout Game?  Details and sign up here:  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a4fa5ad22a13-uwmpanther I'm kind of excited that during the time we were working on our "Sports and Fitness" badge, we had 3-4 great Girl Scout opportunities with local sports teams.  (UWM Soccer, UWM Volleyball, UWM Basketball, and the Wave!)

Bonus #5)  Nursing Home Trip change!  December 15th is the Highland View Winter Concert, and I think almost everyone signed up is from Highland View, as is Ms. Kelly, who's setting that trip up.  So, it is with heavy heart that we have to cancel that date for this year.  (At least it's not canceled because of a major flu epidemic wreaking havoc like 2 years ago!)

Bonus #6)  Nut money:  I'm terrible, and I haven't turned my Nut Money in to Ms. Kelly yet.  If you're on the same timeline that I am, please (Please!) bring your money to the meeting tomorrow (Wednesday 12/7) and we'll get it to her right there!

Thanks so much everyone, and keep scouting!

Girl Scouts: One more Girl Scout opportunity--Basketball!

Hi again everyone!

Based on how many scouts I see at basketball practice, I thought some of you might be interested in this:

UWM Panther Women's Basketball Girl Scout Game

$5 gets a ticket, hot dog, soda, patch, and you're invited to participate in a post-game clinic too!

The game is Saturday December 31st at 2:00 PM at the Klotsche Center on the UWM Campus.

I can't go, but if anyone wants to, I can sign us up as a troop so you get the patch and hot dogs and sodas.  Sign up here and I'll have the tickets set up at Will Call under one of your names and the troop number. (We'll decide whose name as the event gets closer and I know who's going.)

The game is against Northern Kentucky and if any of you follow Women's College Basketball, it should be a good game.  UWM has a great women's team this year (they just beat UW 88-63!) and two players were just honored as Horizon League players of the week.

I think that's all for tonight!  See you soon!

Girl Scouts: December Meeting!

Hello Scouts!

Time for our last meeting of 2016!  Plan on fun!

We'll get our Sports and Fitness patches for the work we've done the last few months, and do some holiday themed activities to wrap up the year.

Sign up for your choice here:

Also:  everyone interested in the Washington DC trip (scouts and parents) keep one of the dates 12/13 OR 12/20 open in the evening.  Girl Scouts has a million and one things that have to be done to approve the trip, and we'll try to knock out a solid 500,000 of them on those two dates.  Every scout and every parent interested in going needs to attend one of those two dates.  We'll have more information there and then too.   I have the Highland View Library listed as the meeting location.  I dropped the reservation request off today, and it should be available.  If it's not, I'll let everyone know changes of location.

Sign up for the one you want here:

Anyone get an extra Chromebook after the meeting today?

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to check and try to help track down one of our scout's Chromebooks.  If your scout came home with two by accident, let me know and I'll pass word along to help set some nerves at ease.

Thanks!

Girl Scouts: College Park Attendance Wednesday and December Nursing Home Visit Reminder

Hi!

Here's who I have signed up for our meeting at College Park tomorrow (Sign up here if you still plan on attending) :

Jesialis Perez
Hannah Schlicht
Ashlee Fronek
Maya Hartman
Bryn Richards
Bailee Anders
Madison Meunier
Megha Murali
Dea Sula
Sophia Vossekuil

Also, pickup will be different this month.  I got this from the office, so we'll have to meet you at entrance 10 at 5:00 tomorrow:

"Good Afternoon,

As of 11/2/16 all groups need to walk students to Door 10 and dismiss from that door when your activity ends.  Door 10 will be locked and parents/guardians will not be able to walk in to meet students.

Thank you,
Julie Morrell"

Finally, there aren't a whole lot of you signed up for the Nursing Home visits in December.  I really do recommend it.  The girls and the residents both get so much from the visits.

See you Wednesday!

Girl Scouts: Meeting Recap and More Nursing Home Dates!

Hi everyone!

We had a lot of fun today.

We split our time between our Sports and Fitness Patch activity and a Thanksgiving craft.  For our badgework the girls got a chance to do some teaching and learning.  Since many of the girls in our group do some sort of extracurricular activity (dance, cheer, poms, soccer, volleyball, basketball, etc.) we split them into groups and gave the girls a chance to "coach" other girls and teach some of their skills.  The girls learned about what makes teaching easier and what makes learning easier, and how they can apply that to the rest of their lives too.

We made pumpkin/candle centerpeices for Thanksgiving as bit of a holiday craft.  Feel free to decorate those pumpkins with more sequins and pins at home--I bet some of the girls will get them to sparkle!

On a different note, as usual our visit to the Elizabeth residence was a good one both for the girls and for the residents there.  I love that tradition in our troop because everyone gets something out of it.

We now have 3 more dates arranged, December 15, 19, and 20.  Sign up here to pick one!

Finally, the Raingutter Regatta is next week Friday.  I hope those boats are coming along well!  See you there!

Girl Scouts: Nursing Home Visit Friday (Tomorrow!)

Hi,

Just a reminder that we have the first of our Nursing Home visits tomorrow (Friday 11/4) 6:00-7:30PM.

There'll be 6 of us there so far, and it looks like we're good on rides--Bonnie, we'd be happy to bring Portia, we can coordinate on arrangements tonight if you want!

It's a rewarding night for the elderly folks living at the Elizabeth Residence, and for the girls helping them out.  If anyone else wants to go, let me know.  And if you need a ride there's space in the van!

Girl Scouts: 50% of this is SUPER IMPORTANT

Hi everyone!

A couple quick things:

#1)  DO NOT JUST SHOW UP TO THE MEETING TOMORROW!  Only one scout was signed up in addition to Ms. Kelly and I, so we're going to call that meeting off.  No one will be there!

#2)  I have Raingutter Regatta kits in hand.  I'll be sending them home through school tomorrow.  SO if your scout's name is:
Kendra P.
Evie S.
Quinn S.
Aria K.
Megha M.
Lia S.
Ellen W.
Kahlen W.
Lauren P.
Ali D.
Hannah P.
Expect a boat kit to come home.

Decorate it well, because just like last year we'll have a "People's Choice" award in addition to the race awards.

Happy Scouting! See you soon one way or another!

Girl Scouts: Nursing Home Visit 2016

Hello everyone!

Once again Ms. Kelly has organized a visit to the Elizabeth Residence Nursing Home (Thanks!) for our scouts to spend some time with the folks living there--play some games, do some crafts, and provide a rewarding experience for everyone involved.

To keep the numbers manageable, we will have several days to choose from but we need to limit it to 10 scouts each day.

This is the first of those dates.  We don't have the rest of the dates set yet, but will get sign ups for those out as soon as we have them!

Please note if you can provide a ride.  We may not need it, but just in case...

Date: 11/04/2016 (Fri.)
Time: 6:00pm - 7:30pm CDT
Location: Elizabeth Residence, 9329 South 48th Street, Franklin, WI 53132

Also, I noticed we have only one person signed up for the meeting this Wednesday (11/2) and are filled up for next Wednesday (11/9).  Did I miss something going on this week?

Sign up to let me know when to expect your scout!  Since we do have a couple extra parents helping on 11/9 (Thanks!) I'll open up a few more spots there too, but I'd love it if we could fill some of the space this Wednesday!

Girl Scouts: Last Call for Nut Orders, and November Meeting Sign Up!

Hi everyone!

3 Things:

1)  Last call for nut orders.  Thanks to everyone that worked hard to help with this year's nut sale!  The very serious, no exceptions, last possible turn-in date for orders is 10/26.  That's it.  If I don't have the order to type in tomorrow, it will not be able to get ordered.  You can email me the numbers of each order type if you want, (in fact that would probably be easiest for everyone!)  I need those before 8:00 PM tomorrow.  Firm.  Serious.  Solid.  (Once more though:  Thanks so much to all who participated!)

2)  November Meetings!  October was a lot of work, so we'll follow that up with a more fun meeting in November.  I'm not eactly sure what, but it'll be good!

3)  Last call for the Wave Girl Scout game!  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a4fa5ad22a13-milwaukee

Thanks everyone and have a great night!

Girl Scouts: My address

Hi,

My address for those of you that need it is:

4256 Teakwood Ct.
Greendale WI 53129

See (some of) you at 4:00!

Aleks

Girl Scouts: One more about tonight! (Old World Wisconsin Halloween)

Hi everyone!

If your scout isn't coming to Legends and Lore at Old World Wisconsin tonight, then you can skip this email entirely!

IF (if) your scout wants to wear a costume to the event tonight, that would be a-ok!

It's not required!  If your scout does wear a costume, make sure it's comfortable and warm and easy to move/walk in.  One of the girls' favorite areas is the "Ghosts in the Graveyard" playing area--so it's good if the costume is easy to run in too.  (No tripping hazards, not too tight, etc.)

Thanks,

Aleks

Girl Scouts: Nice job so far!

Nice job on the nut sale so far!

Remember, you have until tomorrow to get your orders logged online at:

Using the online tool to enter your paper orders makes things a lot easier and a lot more reliable, if you can.  You'll always be better at reading your writing and interpreting your order card than we are, and it saves you the hassle of having to get your sheet turned in to Kelly or I too!

Also, if your girl does set up her online site, and makes her avatar, then if she sells $250 and sends 12 emails (you can use me as one if you want and can't think of 12 other people to send emails to!) she'll get a personalized patch in the mail with her picture and name printed right on it.

I appreciate the hard work everyone, you're all amazing!

Girl Scouts: October meeting recap, and an announcement of an announcement

Hi everyone,

With the October meetings wrapped up, let's recap what the girls worked on this month!

The bulk of the meeting was taken up preparing for our Bronze Award project that's coming in spring.  The plan is to hold a Bike Safety Day in the parking lot of one of our schools.  We'll invite safety experts like police and firefighters, have safety games and prizes, have places to decorate kids bike helmets and sticker for kids to put on their bikes reminding them to wear their helmets.  We'd also like to have helmets to give to families/kids that don't have or can't afford them.

To do all that though, we'll need help, and THAT was our project this month.  We split into groups, and some of the girls prepared a persuasive letter to write to a targeted group (store, community group, police department, etc.) to schedule an appointment to meet and ask for donations.  The second (and third) squads at each meeting prepared presentations to deliver to those targeted groups once meetings were scheduled.

I'll post those presentations on line so the girls can keep studying their parts.  We'll also type up the girls' letters and get them sent out so we can start getting those donations and helpers rolling in!

After all that hard work, each squad shared their letters and presentations with the rest of the girls at the meeting, and then we had a little sticky delicious fun making caramel apples with all sorts of toppings (crushed oreos, chocolate chips, rice krispies, crushed graham crackers, etc.)

It was a lot of fun, and, when you look at the presentations and letters, you'll see it was very productive too.

I'll close out with an announcement for an upcoming announcement:

There'll be a bunch of DC Trip information coming down the pipeline soon, so be ready for it.  I was going to include it here, but it got just crazy out of hand!  Some new ideas, and some options will be coming out too.  Also, whether you're interested in being a driver or not, if you are thinking of joining in the trip, please let Ms. Kelly and I know and send us that recap of your volunteer/helper history with the troop.  We want to be as fair as we can when choosing who fills which spots, and we trust you to remember your Girl Scout efforts better than we do.  We're looking for ways to include more parents and make it a more comfortable trip for everyone involved.

Thanks everyone, happy scouting!

Aleks

Girl Scouts: Return of the Boy Scout vs. Girl Scout Raingutter Regatta!

Announcing the

THIRD ANNUAL
BOY SCOUTS VS. GIRL SCOUTS
RAINGUTTER REGATTA

November 18th from 6:00-8:00 in the Highland View Gym, the Highland View Girl Scouts will take on the Highland View Cub Scouts in a race for the ages.  (Yes, that used to be the date for the Highland View All the World Festival, but that got moved to December.)

What's a "Raingutter Regatta?"  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raingutter_regatta

I have to get numbers of interested girls to Mrs. Roberts to buy boats by October 31st.  Boat kits are $6.00, so let's represent the girls!

The boats require minimal preparation, and the girls should have fun decorating them however they like.  This year, there'll be 4 racing lanes, again so everyone can get a couple runs, and a contest for "best decorated" boat.  Patches for everyone will be provided, and the top boy and girl racers will get trophies!

Happy Scouting!

Girl Scouts: Halloween Legends and Lore and Nut Sale Details

Hi everyone!

Just a couple quick reminders and some details for this weekend:

1)  Halloween at Old World Wisconsin

We'll met at our house at 4:00, on the 22nd with the goal of arriving a little before it opens, and if we stay until close (very easy to do!) we should be back home around 9:45-10:00.  I'll have the permission slips to sign when you drop your scout off that night, so I'll be sure to have everyone's contact information if for some reason we're running late.

It looks like we'll have enough ride space for everyone that needs it.  (Thanks parents!)  Like last year, once we get there we'll break into groups of 4-5 with glow necklaces to keep track of everyone.  That way we won't spend too much time waiting in lines.  Also, there is food available there for purchase, or you can bring your own dinner.  (The food is usually hot dogs, cookies/chips, and hot chocolate--if I remember right, $5 would cover it.)

Here's how I have rides broken down, though there's some flexibility to rearrange things on Saturday.

Skibicki Car 1:
Megha
Lauren Pintar
Hannah Schlicht
Bailee Anders
Maya H.

Skibicki Car 2:
Evie
Samantha
Ellen

Wnuk Car:
Kahlen
Kortnie
Teagan

Depp Car:
Alison
Liliana K.

Meyer Car:
Evangeline M.

Heinz Car:
Gabby H.
Adrhia F-M

2)  Nut Sale!  You have from now until 10/22 to enter your orders online at your personal store:  www.gsnutsandchocolates.com/gswise .  Be sure to set up your account and make your avatar!  Please enter even your paper orders in the "paper order" section.  If you enter everything in it makes the whole sale easier on everyone.  You won't have to drive your form over to our house late at night.  We won't have to try to interpret your handwriting.  You'll know exactly when your order got turned in.  We won't have to be worried that someone's form is stuck in the bottom of a backpack.  So please use the online form.  IF you somehow miss that 10/22 deadline, Ms. Kelly and I can put your order in, so contact us ASAP.  After 10/26 there's no turning back!

If you weren't at a scout meeting in September, or we somehow missed getting you a Nut Order form, also let me know, because you have a little time left to get in on the action.  Just tell me the best way to get that form to you!

That's it for tonight!  We have our last October meeting this Wednesday at College Park.  If you plan on attending but haven't signed up yet, there's still a day left!  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a4fa5ad22a13-october2

See you soon, and Happy Scouting!

Girl Scouts: Milwaukee Wave Girl Scout Night 2016!

Back by popular demand:  Girl Scout Day with the Milwaukee Wave!

This year we have 3 Girl Scout options.  With each option, you also receive a Wave Hat and Patch.

  • Option 1 - Come for the game, stay after the game for soccer activities and watching Finding Dory on the big screen above the field,  and then camp out on the field overnight.  In addition to hat and patch, this option also includes popcorn and small soda.  Need to be picked up at 8AM, December 4th. ($20)
  • Option 2 - Come for the game, stay after the game for soccer activities and watch Finding Dory on the big screen above the field, and then leave/pick up at midnight.   In addition to hat and patch, this option also includes popcorn and small soda.  ($15)
  • Option 3 - Come for the game and go home after the game. ($12)

Girl Scouts: One more call for Old World Wisconsin Haloween!

Hi everyone!

I'm just sending out one more call for the Old World Wisconsin Halloween Event coming up next week.

Here are the details:

Old World Wisconsin Halloween!  A BUNCH of the girls have asked if we'll be doing this again this year, so let's do it!  Old World Wisconsin puts on a great Halloween event called "Legends and Lore."  We can go as a troop Saturday October 22nd.  The event runs from 5:30-9:00PM that night, so we'll meet up at our house at 4:00 with the goal of getting there a little bit early.  Adults are $8.00 and kids are $5.00 after coupons (and I'll grab a bunch of the coupons again!)

It's a little spooky, but no too much.  It's just right for our age girls (not too baby-ish, but not too terrifying.)  They have crafts, stories, skits, a haunted woods walk, a haunted maze, and more.

Make sure to let me know if your scout needs a ride, or if you can provide a ride.

Happy scouting!

Aleks

Girl Scouts: Thanks! And details for the recruitment meeting helpers tonight!

Hi,

Thanks to everyone who said they could help tonight at the recruitment meeting!

Looking back, I see that the email where I asked for helpers for the Highland View Recruitment meeting tonight (6:15-7:30) didn't include where it was going to be.

It'll be in the Highland View Library (outside the office, go in through the upstairs entrance.)

Thanks again!

Aleks

Girl Scouts: Any girls available Wednesday Night to help?

Hi everyone,

This Wednesday is Highland View's Girl Scout Recruitment night and it's always neat to have a couple of the older girls help out doing crafts with the younger kids while the parents talk.  It's also great to have some of the girls talk about some of the things they've done in scouts.

And of course there's a patch involved!

Are any of the scouts available between 6:15-7:30 Wednesday October 12th?

Thanks!

Aleks

Girl Scouts: Wear your Girl Scout Uniform/Sash to the meeting this month!

Hi everyone!

Part of our activities this month will be to record our Nut Sale videos, so please make sure your scout wears her Girl Scout sash (the green one) to the meeting this month.

3)  Old World Wisconsin Halloween!

Sign up here if your scout is interested in going this year, and let me know if you can provide a ride, or if your scout would need a ride.

4)  Bronze Proposals PLEASE take a moment and browse the proposals our girls put together to help kids wear their bike helmets and talk with your scout about the options that might be good choices to actually do.

5)  Nut Sale Many of the girls picked up Nut Sale materials at the meetings in September.  The Nut Sale officially begins on 10/7, and I'll be sending forms home through backpack mail this week for scouts that didn't get them.  Especially for girls going on the Washington DC trip, this is an important one.  Please participate.

Thanks everyone, have a great day!

Aleks

Girl Scouts: Rush jobs! 3 Deadlines! Nothing about Washington DC!

Hi everyone!

Three big deadlines coming up.

1)  let's get bronzed!  Our first Highland View meeting for October is next Wednesday (the next email from me will have the sign up for the October meetings) and we want to get started on the actual work of our Bronze project.  WHICH MEANS, we have to pick it out.  So,I put all of the girls' proposals online at this site:  http://greendaledaisies.blogspot.com/p/here-are-links-to-all-of-our-troops.html

Please take a moment this weekend and read through the proposals and pick 2-3 that your scout thinks would be the best choices for our troop to actually do.  Write your scout's thoughts and choices in the comments at the bottom of that page.

2)  Any last takers for the October 15th UWM Soccer Game?  The game is October 15th, at 2:00PM at Englemann Field at UWM.

$3.00 gets you a your ticket, a hot dog, a soda, and the UWM patch.

Sign up if you can go, and let me know how many TOTAL tickets you'll need. (Family is invited!)

3)  Volleyball!  And, the following week, (October 22nd) is anyone interested in the UWM Women's Volleyball game at 4:00 PM, followed by a post-game volleyball clinic?  It's the same deal as the soccer game:  $3.00 gets you a ticket, hot dog, soda, and patch.  I can't go to that one, but if some want to go, I can sign the troop up and everyone can pick up their tickets, vouchers, and patches at Will-Call at the game.

That's the deadlines coming up!  Please let me know!

Thanks thanks thanks!

Girl Scouts: Washington DC Info for those who signed up as "Interested and Available"

Hi everyone!

Now that we know who's interested and available, we can get into some of the nitty gritty.

Based on the list of who's both interested and available for the trip the week of June 18-24th, we have 26 scouts interested and available. (See list at the end of this email, since the sign up is now closed.)  That means we'd be required to bring 6 parents to fill both Girl Scout safety ratios and driving/sleeping arrangements, bringing our trip number to 32.  More than those 6 adults could come along, but because those are outside of the Girl Scout numbers, and what we would need for the trip, those adults would be handled separately.

Trip wise, Kathleen, Ms. Kelly, and I spent a lot of time considering travel arrangements, lodging, food, and what to do when we get there.

For travel we compared trains, buses, air, and passenger vans based on travel time, price, and convenience.  In almost every case, it just makes sense to rent three 15 passenger vans for the trip.  The only place the vans didn't win on all three counts was in travel time (where air-travel was the clear winner, obviously.)  In addition to being by far the least expensive option, and by far faster than trains or buses, vans give us the option to make several stops along the way, and had the added benefit of giving us travel options while in Washington DC if we change our itinerary to include a more distant site.  (For example:  If we have a great cookie sale this year and decide to spend a day going to Mt. Vernon, having our own transportation makes that very very easy.)  The downside to vans however is the requirement that we actually drive them.  To keep things as safe as possible, we need to have 2 drivers per van, alternating at need.  Which means the best possible option would be for all 6 chaperones to meet all the Girl Scout driver requirements.

For lodging, based on the number of people traveling, we looked into a couple of different options:  1) renting entire houses, and 2) staying at local hotels.  Unfortunately, while there's a certain allure to just having a big house for us all to stay in for the trip, availability was limited.  In every case we ran into either location or parking issues (or both.)  Also, only one house came close to being able to fit everyone, and that was located far from anything interesting.

Hotels turned out to be the better option, and one hotel in particular stood out:

The "Marriott Residence Inn" is within a few blocks (1/2 mile) of the Smithsonian Museums and the US Capitol, as well as most of the major Washington DC attractions.  Reserving space this early can get us into 6-person rooms for $270 per night.  In addition, this hotel has an indoor pool for the girls to relax and play in when we get done with each day's activities, includes complimentary breakfast for everyone each morning, and includes a kitchenette in each room to help us prepare lunches for our day trips, or even group dinners at night if we choose.

Once we're in Washington DC, we have a lot of options for our daily excursions, and most are free!  We will let the girls prepare the exact itinerary before we go, but options include:

The Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, Natural History Museum, Native American History Museum, Art Museum, African American History Museum (just opened!), National Zoo, and the various memorials and monuments.

The girls will also write letters to our Congresspeople and Senators in the next month, to try to get tickets to the US Capitol tour, and/or White House.

Our itinerary will look similar to:

Leave Milwaukee around 5:00AM June 18th  Arrive around 8PM June 18th.  Swim for an hour or two, eat dinner, go to bed.
19th:  Breakfast at hotel.  Do some cool stuff. Eat lunch (bagged or bought) Do some different cool stuff.  Return to hotel for dinner, swim, and bed.
20th:  Breakfast at hotel.  Do some cool stuff. Eat lunch (bagged or bought) Do some different cool stuff.  Return to hotel for dinner, swim, and bed.
21st:  Breakfast at hotel.  Do some cool stuff. Eat lunch (bagged or bought) Do some different cool stuff.  Return to hotel for dinner, swim, and bed.
22nd:  Breakfast at hotel.  Do some cool stuff. Eat lunch (bagged or bought) Do some different cool stuff.  Return to hotel for dinner, swim, and bed.
23rd:  Eat breakfast at hotel, visit a morning site or attraction, eat lunch at that site (bag or buy), hit the road at 4:00PM, dinner on the road, arrive in Milwaukee 7:00 AM June 24th.

So, what will this all cost?

Prices for travel, lodging, and expenses are:

~$4000 for three 15 passenger vans.
~$2000 for food/meals:  Breakfast at the hotel is free, we'd order pizza or some other delivery or cook our own dinner (pasta?)  at the hotel, and would prepare bag lunches for our day trips generally, possibly eating at the attractions 1-2 of the days.
~$9240 for our hotel stay (6 rooms) arriving in DC June 18th and Leaving June 23rd

=$15,240

We currently have $12,700 in our account.  Which means, at this precise moment, the 26 scouts, plus the 6 required chaperones would each have to chip in between $80-100.  If you want to send your scout with spending money for souvenirs, etc. that would be at your own discretion.

Additional participants would cost about $500 to go.  (Possibly less if we didn't need to add an extra van for travel, or an extra room to the hotel reservation.  But while a 15 passenger van SAYS 15 passengers fit, it really means 10-12 fit OK especially with luggage, etc. factored in.  We'd pretty much have to add at least an extra van to fit more adults.  Which would also mean we'd have to add more adults willing to drive.)

We have the nut sale that starts October 7th, and the Cookie Sale in Feb/March to change these figures.  A good Nut and or Cookie sale would also give us options for more daring excursions in and around Washington DC (like the example I mentioned of going to Mt. Vernon which would cost $350 for 26 kids and 6 adults to go.)

We will base the choices for the first six chaperones on parents who've helped the most, and are willing to share in the driving.  To make sure we're keeping it fair, if you're interested as an adult going on the trip, please email Ms. Kelly and I your "Troop 8035 Resume" so we're not short-changing anyone from their service.  Make sure to indicate if you are able and willing to help drive a van for the trip, as well as any volunteer time you've spent with the troop whether it's at meetings, events, activities, etc.  Ms. Kelly's email address is kellymatt8476@gmail.com and I'm at this address.

This sounds like it's going to be AWESOME!

Happy Scouting,

Aleks

Girl Scouts: Girl Scouts Storm the Capital!

Hi everyone!

Since planning has to keep moving forward, I'm going to base initial plans for the trip around the numbers on the "Interested and Available" sign up list as of Saturday night 9/24/2016.  I'll use that as numbers for considering things like how many hotel rooms we'd need, transportation, etc. and then use that to figure out things like costs, and how many cookies and nuts we have to sell to get the costs to specific points.

If you're not on the list as of Saturday night, I'll assume your scout is either not interested, or not available that week.  Keep in mind, this list is not a "You're locked in and have to go!" list.  It's merely a list to indicate that your scout is interested in taking a trip to Washington DC with the rest of the troop, and is available that week to go with the rest of the scouts.  If your scout doesn't even want to go, or isn't going to be available that week, then we won't even start to worry about transportation or hotel space for her, and that'll keep the numbers a lot more accurate.

(We will get to the "You're locked in and have to go!" sign up pretty soon though.  If you want to get to that list when it comes, make sure you're on this one.)

Thanks!  Keep scouting!
