Girl Scouts: Booth-Making Day, Meeting, Admirals, Cookie Cash

Hi everyone!

Four notes today:

#1)  Booth Making Day:  We'll make our Wellness Day Booth stuff on April 7th in the morning.  Plan on 10:00-1:30, with a light lunch served in the middle.  If a scout has to arrive late or leave early, that's OK!  There's a lot of work to be done!  We know about scheduling issues, for sure!

#2)  Admirals:  In the absence of a lot of feedback, I'm just going to order all the free tickets our troop has coming, (10) and the first people to ask to use them, get them.  The game is at 6:00 on April 6th downtown at the UWM Panther Arena.  Our family won't be going, since Evie has Forensics state in the morning, and then is welcoming back an Honor Flight with her Air Patrol Unit in the evening.

#3)  April Meetings:  We have our two meetings this month.  Our planning meeting (3:00-4:30)  is April 10th, and our action meeting  (3:00-5:00) is April 17th.  If we can plan quickly on the 10th, the girls were excited to head out and pick some of that invasive pest, and nuisance weed, garlic mustard and turn it into our patented Girl Scout Garlic Mustard Pesto--we'll bring the crackers!  Time willing we'll also do some clean up around the school, since the girls asked about it last meeting.

#4)  Cookie Cash:  If you haven't turned in your cookie money, please do!  The last withdrawal came out of our account, and because we maintain a good balance, we didn't get overdrawn, but if anyone doesn't turn in their money, the cookie sale changes from a fundraiser, to a fund-loser!

Finally:  I hope the girls remember their French International Fair project and what French activity they're supposed to do on April 1st!  Hint:  It sounds a little fishy!

Girl Scouts: A Nice Surprise! But coming up fast!

Hi everyone!

I just finished tying up the ends on our cookie sale, and great news!  Since the girls selling cookies averaged 175 boxes, our troop qualifies for tickets for the scouts to the Milwaukee Admirals Girl Scout Game April 6th at 6:00.

Sorry there's not much time, but this was kind of unexpected!  Nice job girls!

Here's the thing.

#1)  I need to know ASAP which cookie-selling scouts are available and interested in going.

#2)  Friends, other family members, and non-cookie selling scouts can also attend, and tickets for them are $20 each.  I need to know that number ASAP too.

#3)  I need to know who will need a ride so we can coordinate around the various other activities going on that day (Solo and Ensemble, and State Forensics Tournament, for example)

Please rely ASAP if you're interested in going!

Girl Scouts: Father Daughter Dance Sign Up

Hi everyone!

I got the sign up to help out at the Father Daughter Dance!

Two notes:

1)  Remember,if there's going to be a Father Daughter Dance next year, it'll be up to us to do it--if we don't, there won't be a dance at all.   Now's a chance to see what work is involved and see if we want to take on that responsibility.

2)  If you sign up as a worker, you do not need to pay to register.  Just wear your girl scout vest/sash over your dance wear and arrive and do your work, and dance and eat during your free time!

Here's the link:

See you there!

Girl Scouts: Earth Day Activity Choices! Vote Now!

Hi again everyone,

I think this is the last one for today!  Last meeting I asked the girls to keep their eyes open for Earth Day activities we could do outside of our traditional cleaning up around the school (and now our traditional Garlic Mustard picking and eating day!)

I got three submissions, and since April is approaching, let's pick!

Choice 1:  Riverkeepers River Cleanup April 27  Check out their website here:  https://www.milwaukeeriverkeeper.org/restore/spring-cleanup/

Choice 2:  Urban Ecology Center Day of Service Clean Up April 27 that we did last year.  Check out their website here:  https://urbanecologycenter.org/programs-events-main.html?id=18096&view=event

Choice 3:  Adopt a Beach Clean Up.  April 20  Website here:  http://greatlakesadopt.org/Secure/Event/14871

Get your votes in early!  We have to choose fast in some cases (Riverkeepers in particular.)

Girl Scouts: Community Wellness Event New Date--please RSVP!

Hi everyone,

In case you hadn't seen, the new date for the Community Wellness Event is April 9th.  Since our scouts are still signed up to have a booth there, who can join in?

Details:

When:  April 9th 5:30-7:00 our booth, can stay until 8:30 if they want to see the panel presentation.
Where:  Greendale High School MPR
What:  Provide a booth showing how Girl Scouting provides for better health and gives healthy non-drug options to girls in our community.

We'll also have a 2-ish hour get together before then to prepare our booth (Make our background and decide on exactly what our activity is--do we use the spinning wheel again?  How?)  Is anyone available during the day on Monday April 1st?  How about early in the day on Sunday April 7th?

Thanks everyone!  Please let me know your availability!

Girl Scouts: Robot Battles Details for Friday

Hi everyone!

Just a quick update and info about the trip to the Robotics Competition on Friday (tomorrow).

There was no need for pre-registration, so if your scout is available and wants to go, then just let me know to expect you and there's a place for her!  (Email or text 414-595-6668 )

Travel Details:  We should have enough room in our van and car.  Please arrive at our house (4256 Teakwood Ct.) at 9:20 unless you've already made other arrangements with us.

We plan to be back between 1:45-2:00 that afternoon.  Since most of the girls have phones, we'll make sure they text when we're leaving!  If they don't have a cell phone, they can use ours too.  A permission slip with places for emergency contact numbers is attached, please send it with your scout.  (I'll have copies at our house you can fill out too!)

Wear weather appropriate clothes and comfortable shoes.  For lunch, since Grand Avenue is completely empty, we'll take a short walk to the food hall just past the MATC campus nearby (about a 6-7 minute walk.)  If it's raining or otherwise crummy weather, we'll drive, but otherwise plan to walk a few blocks.

Lunch Details:  Eating at "Restaurants at eleven25" at 1125 N. 9th Street, Milwaukee WI 53233.  Website: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mew6G_og-PI
5 choices including Meat on the Street, Gouda Girls, Upper Crust Pizza, Huan Xi Express, and Tokyo Express.
If a girl brings $10 that should cover anything she could want.  If not, we'll cover any overage.

The robotics competition itself is at the UWM Panther arena 400 W. Kilbourn Ave. Milwaukee, WI 53203.

If you could have your scout watch the rules/competition summary here, that would really help them understand what's going on!

Tentative Schedule:

Leave our house around 9:30, pick up the girls that need to be picked up.
Arrive at the competition around 10:00 AM
Find seats, watch some competitions until 11:00
Go visit the pit area and talk to the robotics teams and see the robots up close until 12:00
Walk to lunch at "Restaurants at eleven25" (1125 N. 9th Street), arrive around 12:30
Order, eat lunch, and summarize any highlights, lessons, or ideas the girls got from the event
Head home between 1:15-1:30
Arrive home 1:45-2:00

See you soon!  Happy Scouting!

Girl Scouts: Cookies--last call!

Hi everyone!

I'm making the last trip to get cookies for the troop tomorrow (Tuesday), so if you need any more, this is the last chance!

Also, I'll send out current totals for each girl that has sold cookies so far so you know where you're sitting.  Please also let me know what recognition choices your scout wants for each choice level, if they're at a level that requires a choice to be made (75, 125, 175, 225, 300, 500) and any size information if their choices are clothing.

Also also:  anyone else for the field trip to the robotics competition on 3/29 and lunch at Grand Ave?

Girl Scouts: Help make sure this isn't the LAST father daughter dance!

Hi everyone,

For many years an older Greendale Girl Scout Troop has put on the awesome Father Daughter Dance in Greendale.  However, I've talked with their leader, and it sounds like this might be their last year.

Since this is a great tradition in Greendale, that troop leader asked if our troop might be interested in taking over.  I told her we might, but that our girls would probably like to get a feel for the work involved first.  So she is putting together a sign up sheet where our girls can step in and get their feet wet working with this pretty big event.

I know our girls have had a great time at the dance in the past.  Now is their chance to give back, and make that experience continue to be a reality for the girls just starting off in Greendale.

As soon as the troop leader gets the sign up link to me, I'll get it out to you.  I wanted to give you a head's up right away though since the flyer for the dance already came home with the girls.  Without us, this might be the last dance!

Girl Scouts: Important March Info--Meeting this week! Skip next week. Robot Battles March 29?

Hi everyone!

March is cruising by!  First of all, thanks to the girls who helped out at Highland View STEAMfest last Friday.  The little kids love seeing the big kids there and it makes the science so much more approachable for them!

1)  Don't forget our March Meeting is THIS WEDNESDAY 3/13.  3:00-4:30

Officially it was supposed to be a planning/work meeting, but we got ahead of ourselves last month, so it'll be all fun this month!  Hopefully the girls remember the sections they wanted to lead:

Evangeline + Kendra:  Find an athlete who could visit our meeting and interview them at the meeting about being an athlete.  The girls have ideas of people to ask.  NOTE:  If no one found an athlete, there's no rush on this.  We could hold on until April.  But hopefully everyone is thinking about their contacts and who they might know that would talk to the girls about being an athlete and showing good sportsmanship on the big stages!

Ellen + Evie (1) :  Make an obstacle course challenge for the scouts to do blindfolded to learn communication and teamwork.

Ellen + Evie (2) :  Find a competitive game for us to go watch as a troop.  Looking at the upcoming GHS schedule, they surveyed the girls at the meeting to decide whether we should watch a GHS girls soccer game or a GHS boys baseball game.  The girls decided that girls soccer would be their choice.  And found that their first game is at GHS Gavinsky Stadium on April 1st 4:30 JV or 6:30 Varsity.  We'll decide which to watch as it gets a little closer.

Carrie + Quinn + Teagan:  Choose a female athlete and teach us about her.  They chose Serena Williams.  Carrie will be teaching us about interesting facts, special details, and general information about Serena, Teagan will teach us about Serena's family and history, and Quinn will teach us about her career and professional accomplishments.

With any time we have left after learning about Serena Williams and after doing some obstacle course teambuilding challenges, we'll devote to girl scout games and just focus on fun.  We did a lot of work lately, so this will be a good break.

2)  NO MARCH MEETING ON 3/20 because we'll be out of town.

3)  Robotics Competition 3/29   A couple girls suggested going to visit the Regional Robotics Competition at the UWM Panther Arena again this year.  (I think we skipped last year?)

We have off from school on Friday 3/29 the first full day of competition, so the timing is PERFECT.  In the past we've gone before lunch, watched some competitions (this years competition:  Deep Space!  Check out the demo video here:  https://youtu.be/Mew6G_og-PI  ), then visited the "Pit Area" and talked with the robotics teams and saw the robots up close, then headed to Grand Avenue for lunch, before coming home.  If we planned to get there around 10:00, we could have lunch around noon, and be back home by 1:30-1:45.

Who would be interested and available to join in?

See you Wednesday!

Girl Scouts: Correction--that event is the weekend AFTER this weekend, 3/16

Oops!

I'm getting ahead of myself!  The Women and Girls in Science Event is in two weeks, not this weekend.  It's 3/16, not 3/9.

Aleks

Girl Scouts: Any other interest in the "Women and Girls in Science" event?

Hi,

I only heard back from one person about the "Women and Girls in Science" event at the Wehr Nature Center this weekend. I have to get reservations in tomorrow if people plan to go, and I don't know if that girl would want to go all alone.

Details:

Women and Girls in Science

Saturday, March 16, 2019 @ 1-3 pm

Location: Greenfield Park Pavilion

Let's celebrate historic female figures as well as current women in science and their contributions! Participants will be able to visit with local women scientists of various backgrounds that are willing to share their passions. It is strongly suggested that young ladies bring along questions to ask scientists attending the program.

They'll have several women from various sciences there, who will talk with the girls, answer questions and show what they do.

Please let me know tonight or tomorrow if your scout wants to attend and I'll get spaces locked in for them.

Girl Scouts: Volunteer Opportunity at Highland View STEAMfest March 8th

Hi everyone,

Highland View is looking for volunteers for STEAMfest this Friday 3/8 from 5:30-8:00.  If anyone's avaiable, the help would be greatly appreciated, and a good chance to show the younger kids what great examples the girls are!

Can anyone join in?
