Girl Scouts: Reminder--Cookie Kick Off Party January 4th!

Hi everyone,

Happy New Year!

Just a reminder that our troop is hosting the Greendale Cookie Kick Off Party at GMS on Friday January 4th from 6:30-8:00.  Around 100 Girl Scouts from local troops will be there to play games, answer questions, sing songs, and have fun.

Our girls are welcome to join in and play too, and at our age, it would also be great if they could help out at some of the games/areas too.

Happy Scouting!  See you Friday!

Girl Scouts: Meeting tomorrow and an AWESOME sounding event!

Hi everyone,

Just a quick reminder that there's a meeting after school tomorrow, until 5:00.

Please check the supplies page to make sure we'll have everything we need, and make sure everyone brings a coffee mug (not for coffee!)  We'l bring microwaves, and utensils/etc. so that's all set.

Also, I don't know if you get the emails from Girl Scouts that I get, but I got one yesterday that had an event listed that sounded AWESOME!

Here's the description:

Adventure Race Overnight
February 8-9 / February 9-10
Cost: $45
Gear up! Girls can give Adventure Racing a try. They will trek through the snow at Camp Silver Brook using a map and compass to go from checkpoint to checkpoint. Then they will throw on a pair of snow shoes (weather permitting) or use their boots to cross Lucas Lake, no boats needed. They will have a blast finding all the checkpoints. Finally, they will enjoy tubing at Sunburst ski hill in the evening! (Camp Silver Brook, West Bend)

There's a school dance on the 8th (I think) so the girls would probably have to do the 9-10th which goes from 9:00 AM Saturday to 9:00 AM Sunday.

Who's in?  It sounds super cool, and I know Evie's always looking for an excuse to go tubing!  We could provide rides.  (We'd be sure to be back quick on Sunday, since our schedule looks like it's got a ton going on that day!)

As always since kindergarten, if the $45 cost would be prohibitive, just let me know and the troop can cover the cost.

Girl Scouts: Great organizers, and leaders! (Info about next week.)

Hi everyone!

Our experiment with being a fully Girl-Organized, and Girl-Led group is going AWESOME!  These girls can get things done!

We actually had three jobs today: planning our next meeting, planning our booth at February's International Fair, and planning our booth at the Community Coalition's Health Fair at the end of January, and the girls were great.

For now, we'll focus on the meeting next week.  The girls came up with a three part plan:  Holiday Yoga (led by Eva K.), Making Dog Treats for dogs in foster care and for dogs of people we know (Led by Quinn and Katie) , and making Rice Krispie treats for ourselves (Led by Teagan and Kendra).

They developed plans to run each segment, and also lists of supplies they need, and asked me to put together a sign up page so everyone can help bring what's needed.  (As always, if you want, I can write a troop check at the meeting to cover expenses if you bring or send a receipt.)

Here's that page:

Also:  EVERYONE NEEDS TO BRING A COFFEE MUG!

Finally, here are dates for four non-meeting events our troop is participating in during upcoming months:

#1)  Cookie Kick Off Party @ GMS 6:30-8:00 January 4th --Girls can volunteer to run a station and will also get a chance to play at the party too.  We expect one hundred or so Girl Scouts from Greendale to join us!  This is the biggest Girl Scout event in Greendale and it's all up to us.  Let's keep this party rolling!

#2)  Greendale Community Coalition Health and Drug Avoidance Fair @ GHS 1/30/2019 --Like last year, we were invited to have a booth at the event highlighting healthy living and ways Girl Scouts can provide safe and healthy life opportunities.  The girls decided they're going to make a health trivia game for the event.  We'll work on details at the January meeting, and at a separate working party if that's needed.

#3)  Green Corners Service Area International Fair at Whitnall High School 2/16 2:00-3:30 --Similar to last years, our troop will be representing a country at the Green Corners Girl Scout International Fair.  We were SUPER lucky this year and got FRANCE!  (Last year we were China if that helps as a reminder about the event) The girls came up with some great ideas for our booth (Our SWAP will be polyclay baguettes, we'll have a cheese assortment for sampling, and will have bocce ball, coloring pages, and French hopscotch activities for kids to do.)  Also like last year, we will schedule an International Fair Work-Party as the event gets closer; and yes, there will be crepes!

#4)  Greendale Family Fitness Day 2/10 12:00-3:00 @ GHS --Last year our troop shared its "Make Your Own Game" activity in the wrestling room of GHS.  KIDS LOVED IT (Really!  We got the best reviews outside of swimming.)  So we were invited back again this year.  This is an amazing opportunity to volunteer and make a positive change in the community.  IMPORTANT:  I would need two adults to run the show at this event though, since Evie has a different ceremony that ur family has to go to.  Please?

If you can get those into the calendar now, that would be great.  I am so proud of how the girls got their ideas organized today.  Great job Scouts!  See you next week!

Girl Scouts: Bring ideas!!!

Last reminder that tomorrow (Wednesday) is our planning meeting day. Remember that meeting is shorter than the main meeting too, only until 4:30 instead of 5.

Come with ideas--the girls can make anything happen!

Girl Scouts: Planning meeting next Wednesday!

Hi everyone,

Just a reminder that our December planning meeting is 12/12 and our meeting-meeting is 12/19.

As always, I'll bring the snacks, girls bring the ideas!

I also have some good news for the girls about this year's International Fair, so that'll be a great surprise too.

Girl Scouts: Don't forget to work on your boat!

Hi everyone!

Evie is in the basement working on her boat right now, so I figured I'd send out a reminder to everyone else!  The regatta is Wednesday 11/28, at GMS, so you'll want to have your boat painted by Tuesday so it's dry on Wednesday!

If you still want/need a boat kit, let me know and I can get one to your scout Monday at school, or you can swing by our house tonight since I have an extra one.

And bonus note:  remember, even if you're not planning to race a boat, it'd be great if you could join us at the event!  There's always need for helping hands, and a chance to be a good role model for the younger scouts that will be there!

Happy post-Thanksgiving, and see you at school!

Gil Scouts: That's what I call leadership! Also, NOVEMBER 28th!

Hi everyone!

First of all, what a fantastic Girl-Led meeting we had on Thursday!  It's great to see the girls be leaders and proud of it!  The 2018-2019 Girl Scout theme was G.I.R.L: G=Go Getter, I=Innovator, R=Risk Taker, L=Leader.  We might still be working on risk taking, but I'm super proud at our girls' abilities to lead, innovate ,and be go-getters!

We applauded them at the meeting, but we can definitely recognize our meeting leaders again:  Teagan, Katie and Carrie did a great job leading the Pictionary, Kendra and Quinn were fabulous leading the "Thanksgiving Grilled Cheese", and Evie and Ellen were great at organizing and leading the blanket making.  Great job girls!

Remember, the planning meeting where the girls decide what to do, and who's leading what activities are the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 3:00-4:30.  The meeting where we actually do the girls' plans are on the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 3:00-5:00.

RAINGUTTER REGATTA NOVEMBER 28th!  6:15-8:00PM

I have a few more boat kits for girls that want to join in!  Let me know if you want one!  They're not hard to put together, depending on how fancy/creative you want to get.  Hopefully a bunch of our girls can make it.

If your scout wants to help, but not make a boat, that's AWESOME too, we can always use the helpers!  50-ish Highland View Girl Scouts are coming, so it'll be a lot of fun no matter how your scout participates.

Also, if you haven't picked up nut sale stuff from me, I'll bring that to the meeting too.

See you tomorrow!

Girl Scouts: Awesome Planning Girls! (Here's the details, parents!)

Hi everyone,

The girls did a FANTASTIC job today of planning the meeting for next week.  I think they've got the hang of it.  I'll mention a couple details for parents, and follow up with what jobs they assigned themselves for next Wednesday.

1)  The girls divided up supply duties between themselves.  If you buy supplies, feel free to check with me at the meeting and we can write you a troop check to cover the expense.

2)  Some of the supplies are for a cooking/snack project, so please be careful to avoid anything containing nuts or produced in a facility that also processes nuts.

3)  We're anticipating in the neighborhood of 10-11 scouts, so plan accordingly.  The food supplies aren't to create entire individual meals with though, but are for the girls to use to create individual Thanksgiving-style grilled-cheese sandwiches, so you wouldn't need, for example, 12 whole servings of mashed potatoes, just enough for 1-2 spoonfuls per girl to layer onto a sandwich.

Without further ado, here's what the girls came up with.  (Picture of their chart also attached.)

Part #1
Girl Scout Law and Thanksgiving Pictionary
Leader Scouts:  Teagan, Katie, Carrie

Girl Scouts: Planning meeting Wednesday 11/7 after school until 4:30

Hi everyone,

Just a reminder that tomorrow after school is the girls' meeting to plan our November.  I'll bring a snack, the girls bring ideas and plans.  Everything is on the table--field trips, events, guests, let's hear what the girls want to do and are willing to make happen!

Girl Scouts: Anyone interested in the Raingutter Regatta?

Hi everyone,

The Raingutter Regatta is coming up Wednesday November 28th.  I figured the girls could help again, OR, if they wanted, they could build and run boats too.  If they're interested, I have to get the boats right away though, so let me know ASAP!

Is anyone interested?

Also:  Milwaukee Wave Scout Night 1/26, anyone interested there?  The movie afterwards will be Beauty and the Beast.  The Wave's been playing a lot of great soccer, and the games are super fun to watch even if you're not generally a soccer fan.  I don't know if we would stay overnight again this year, unless the girls really want to.  (If they want to, then sure--it's their troop!  But otherwise, I think the game and the movie are probably a solid night.)

Thanks,

Aleks

Girl Scout Emergency! Fun Run Water Station Sunday Morning

Hi everyone,

The Girl Scout Troop that usually handles our water bottle-handing-out stop at the Fun Run (in the Greendale Community Center Parking Lot on 76th St.) suddenly can't do it, so we need a couple people to hand water bottles to passing runners between 10:15-11:15 .

Will anyone be around to help out?

Thanks a million!

Girl Scouts: It's on!

Hi everyone!

Sounds like we can get some scouts for some science-ing, snack-ing, and service!

We'll plan on our regular meeting time (3:00-5:00) in our usual room from last year.

If your scout can come after a different club, then that's A-ok.  We have a couple that'll come right away after school getting things started.  The rest know where to find us--just hurry so the best cookie decorating supplies are still in stock!

See you tomorrow,

Aleks

Girl Scouts: Anyone interested in a Service/Science/Snack meeting tomorrow?

Hi everyone,

Since we have the room reserved, and since I have cookie decorating stuff we were going to use at the last meeting, and have a couple cases of new snap circuits and remote-control-robot building kits I want to test out, and since the scouts could help make some banners for the Raffle Prizes for the Fun Run this weekend, we could still get the girls together tomorrow (Wednesday) if there are more than 1-2 interested.

If I hear from more than 1-2 scouts that would like to join in tonight, I'll send a confirmation or anti-confirmation email out before I go to bed tonight so you can have your scouts go to the meeting after school.

If girls want to come after other clubs, they're welcome to.  I know Evie has Math Team/Math Club after school until 4:00, so she'd come afterwards.

Let me know!

Girl Scouts: Ooops! One more thing--Nut Sale!

Hi everyone,

Make sure you get rolling on the Nut Sale.  The girls often have great ideas, and this is where the budget for THEIR meeting plans would come from.  For example, do we want to go to a Chocolate tasting/preparing event for a meeting? We could, if a girl has that idea!  It would be great to have the budget to cover it!

Or, as before, do they want to sock money away for more travel?  I wasn't kidding about Girl Scout travel opportunities!   When the girls are in High School they really could go stay at a Girl Scout owned and run chalet in the Swiss Alps!  Crazy!

You can set up your nut selling account here if you haven't already:  https://www.gsnutsandchocolates.com/campaign/Account/Register/844

You can also log in all the paper orders your scout received.  I can get you an order form if you want, or you can print one up here:  http://www.gswise.org/content/dam/girlscouts-gswise/documents/2018_WisconsinSoutheast_OC%20Final.pdf

Between 10/21-10/23 you can enter your order totals and prize choices into your account (there are some good ones this year!)

Girl Scouts: Meeting Date Change + Idea from a Girl

Hi everyone,

1)  To try to make it easier for everyone else to fit things into their schedules, let's try WEDNESDAYS (2nd and third Wednesday each month) for our meetings instead of Thursdays.  The Office OKed the changes.  So that means this is our new meeting schedule:

10/11 (P) + 10/18 (M)  CANCELLED!
11/7 (P)  + 11/14 (M)
12/12 (P)  + 12/19 (M)
1/9 (P)  + 1/16 (M)
2/13 (P)  + 2/20 (M)
3/13 (P)  + 3/20(M)
4/10 (P)  + 4/17 (M)
5/8 (P)  + 5/15 (M)

(P) = Planning Meeting 3:00-4:30
(M) = Regular Meeting 3:00-5:00 (If we do Wednesdays, January and February might end early, we'll see when they get closer.)

Just like before though, if no one plans on the (P) dates, or no one is willing to lead on (M) dates, then there won't be a meeting.

2)  One of the girls suggested we check out the Milwaukee Wave Girl Scout Night again.  So, the date on that is:  Saturday January 26th.  It has the same options as in the past--Just go to the game, or go to the game and stay until Midnight watching a movie on the Jumbotron, or go to the game, and set up a tent to sleep overnight on the field and go home Sunday morning.  Everyone going gets a patch and Milwaukee Wave socks.  Please ask your girls if anyone is interesting in going, and should we do the campout again?

That's all for now.  See you in November, unless girls have other ideas of things for us to do between now and then!

Girl Scouts: NO MEETING 10/!8

Hi everyone,

Looks like there won't be a meeting next week.  We only had one girl come to do planning, but while she was up for planning, she didn't want to take leadership at the meeting next week.  So, while she did put together a pretty decent plan, it sounds like there won't be a meeting next week.

Better luck in November, I guess?

In the meantime, if any of the girls want to go through the connections book online here:  http://www.gswise.org/content/dam/girlscouts-gswise/documents/Connections%202018-2019.pdf , or know of community or other events we could do as a troop, and want to find something we can plan an outing around, that's another way to take leadership and keep us rolling.

Reminder: Planning meeting TOMORROW (Thursday 10/11)

Hi everyone,

Just a reminder the girls' meeting-planning-meeting is tomorrow.  I'll bring the treats, and girls bring the ideas!

On deck for MEdia journey planning:  Sophia V.

I know a LOT of the girls have a big cross country meet tomorrow, or Girls on the Run, so it's super  duper important for the girls that aren't in Cross Country or GotR to come to the planning meeting.  Remember--if no one plans the meeting, there won't be a meeting!  This is a great chance to be a leader.

Meet in room 149, right after school as usual, but plan to wrap up sooner--around 4:30 instead of the regular 5:00.  Our regular meeting 10/18 will go to our normal 5:00, unless the girls need to adjust that based on the plan they come up with!

See you tomorrow!

Girl Scouts: MEdia Journey Session Bosses

Hi,

I've attached the sign up sheet for the girls who were there to pick sessions to run on our MEdia journey.  If your scout's name wasn't on the list, they can pick a session and work with a the other scout on the list as partners.

The sessions will run roughly by month, except 9-10 will probably roll together.

If your scout has a question about what a particular session entails, based on the title, let me know and I'll explain better!

Thanks!

Instructional Video on setting up a scout's Nut Sale Website and Avatar

Hi,

I was doing some digging, and came across this video that'll make setting up each girl's nut sale website a lot easier.  If you did it last year (or the year before) it's pretty much the same, but the refresher might be useful.

Also remember, that she has to have the website and avatar set up in order to get the customized (name and avatar image) patch for the Nut Sale.

Girl Scouts: 3 More things!

Hi (again!)

3 more quickies:

#1)  Service opportunity!  The Step Up to Better Health fun run is almost here, and there's always need for helpers directing the runners, setting up, cleaning up, etc.  It's 10/21 and volunteer opportunities run from 9:00-12:00.

You can sign up here:

#2)  Glow Ball!  On October 13th, there's a pretty awesome Girl Scout event coming up.  Unfortunately, our family can't go, but it is a family event, so anyone can register themselves and their family to attend.  (Even non-scout relatives can register and go to this one!)   Registration is required, and there's an additional charge for any registrations less than a week before the event.

Here are the details:

Girl Scout Glow Ball
When:  October 13th 6:00-9:00 PM
Where:  Camp Alice Chester
Cost:  $10 Scouts, $5 Adults
Description:  Do you know why glow sticks glow? Learn about chemiluminescence, the science behind the glow and investigate how chemical reactions can emit light. Chat with a Solar System Ambassador and peek through a telescope down at the waterfront. Wander the woods and discover night time animal eyes. Make new friends around the campfire as you sing silly songs and make s'mores. Light it up with glow games like 9 square in the air and glow bowling, enjoy DJ Tim's jams, and indulge in the caramel apple bar.

#3)  Girl Scout Nut Sale is coming up!  Sales begin on October 5th, and every scout family should receive an email from scouts with the links to participate in the online portion.  I also have paper selling materials to distribute if you want that too.  Online info is also available here:  https://www.gswise.org/en/cookies/fall-nut-sale.html  Selling ends on 10/26, so I can have Evie bring the stuff to school for you, or we can figure out a different way to get it to you.  That is also after our first planning and regular meetings so a scout could pick the materials up there.

Since the girls will have a budget to spend for any meetings they plan, anything we sell can help fund their meeting and activity ideas through the year.  Also, since we got them hooked on travel, they could keep saving for the opportunity to travel to more exotic locations as they get older.  (Did you know Girl Scouts owns a Swiss Chalet that troops can visit and stay in????  https://www.girlscouts.org/en/about-girl-scouts/global/world-centers.html  )

That's all for now!  Happy scouting!

Aleks

Girl Scouts: Getting the year rolling--a lot of new stuff! And some very important old stuff!

Hi everyone,

I hope everyone's recovered from the campout!  What a great way to start the year!  I've spent a bunch of time with other troop leaders this summer, and got a lot of ideas and am excited to try some (very!) new ways of doing things this year.

Meetings

Now that we're all GMS Scouts, it's time for the girls to really take over running the show. (The girls, not the parents!) In fact, at the Cadette level, we're not even called troop "leaders" anymore, but are troop "advisors" to show the leadership role the girls are starting to take over.

So, meetings will be a bit different in 2018-2019.   I'm hoping that these dates will get locked in, but I don't have them officially approved by the school yet, so there's a slim chance things will change.

How will meetings be different?

First, there will be two per month, BUT, one won't be for everyone.  What???

On the second Thursday of each month, from after school - 4:30, will be a planning meeting.  It'll be shorter than the regular meeting (but will still run to 4:30 so if girls are in other Thursday clubs they can still make it over) and just the girls who want to be on the "planning committee" for the next meeting will attend this one.  We'll bring a treat for the girls so the can chat, eat, and plan the next week's adventure.

Who should come:
#1) Whichever girl took responsibility for the upcoming Journey section (the girls all picked Journey sections at the end of last year, I'll let you know who's on deck!)
#2) Whoever else wants to be a leader, has an idea, or just wants to help plan!

They'll come up with a plan and divide up responsibilities for the meeting the following week. That includes leading activities, getting supplies, etc.  They could plan out farther if they want to do something bigger (field trip, for example) but would have to commit to being at the future planning meetings involving that trip. Meeting activities they might decide on could include: Do a badge, crafts, games, activities, field trip, etc.

The girls will also use this time to plan our monthly activities as well.  We'll use the Girl Scout Connections book, and their ideas to pick what fun not-a-meeting stuff we'll do throughout the year.

If no one comes, we won't have a meeting that month.

The following Thursday (so the 3rd Thursday of each month) will be the meeting those girls planned out.  That would be our usual after school - 5:00 meeting time.  And that means the schedule would look like:

10/11 (P) + 10/18 (M)
11/7 (P)  + 11/15 (M)
12/13 (P)  + 12/20 (M)
1/10 (P)  + 1/17 (M)
2/14 (P)  + 2/21 (M)
3/14 (P)  + 3/21(M)
4/11 (P)  + 4/18 (M)
5/9 (P)  + 5/16 (M)

(P) = Planning Meeting 3:00-4:30
(M) = Regular Meeting 3:00-5:00

Speaking of, for our first meeting, our first Journey Segment planner is Sophia.  Evie will get the Journey Book to her at school this week so she can start thinking about what and how she wants to do things.

And, if any girls want to get a head start on looking into activities for the year, the Girl Scout Connections book is available online here, and you may have received one in the mail too.
For fun, have your scout do the "G.I.R.L." quiz on page 7 to see what kind of scout she is!

Back to the Campout for one second:  I do have some small lost-and-found stuff I'll bring to the next meeting.  I have some suncatchers the early girls decorated when they first arrived on Friday, and a couple shell candles that didn't make it home with their makers.

Also, the girls who stayed either night did enough work to wrap up their "try new things" Cooking Badge, so I'll have those for the girls at our first meeting too!

Finally, Silver Award stuff:
Evie presented our work to the Greendale Village Board of Health earlier this month, and they're very excited about what we've done, and excited to move along with it.  We set up 4 next steps, that the girls can either incorporate into meetings or we can do as "side projects."  Start thinking about what one(s) your scout would be most interested in doing!  (They could do them all!)

4 Next Steps:

#1)  Some of us will make a written list of the spots that were found that needed repairs, and take pictures to present to the Village of Greendale officials to ask if they can be repaired.

#2)  Some of us will research outdoor path signs and what we would need to do to make them and have them placed at the important intersections we found in our surveys

#3)  Some of us will research outdoor benches.  The village has already agreed to purchase several.  We would have to confirm the locations and check to see how we can have them placed there—for example, are they on private property, or are they on Village or School District property?

#4)  Some of us will write new information for the old walking path brochures and also contact the map company to see if they have an electronic version of the Walking Path Map we got from the Village of Greendale so we can mark different routes and include the paths on the suggested Greendale routes.

That's it for this email!  See you soon, and keep scouting!

Girl Scouts: Still looking for scouts for the opportunity tomorrow!

Hi everyone,

Tomorrow's (Tuesday 9/11) chance to present to the Greendale Board of Health still needs Girl Scouts.  Evie is happy to do it alone, but this is a great opportunity for the girls.

1)  It's a chance to show that they're making a difference in the community in front of an actual governmental decision making body.  If you can think of a better way to make a girl feel more powerful, influential, and stronger, let me know!
2)  Several of the Board of Health Members are on several scholarship committees in Greendale--there's no better time to make a good impression!  This is a great chance to get on a good path to saving some of that college $$$.
3)  The silver project is supposed to involve 10+ hours of time from each girl participating.  Some are getting there, but there won't be many hours easier than this!

So I do hope some more scouts can join in tomorrow.  The meeting starts at 6:00, but we'd want to be there 5:15 or so in order for the girls to organize themselves.  If your scout can come, please let me know tonight, so that she and Evie can coordinate what kind of presenting they want to do.  Please be dressed appropriately to make a presentation to a government body.  (Nice clothes please!)

What they're invited to share:

What they're doing.
Why they're doing it--Why is walking good? Why do we want to make it easier to walk in Greendale?
What they've done so far--Community route survey, girl scouts and family walk survey around Scout Lake
Present the large map with spots with needs indicated (repairs, signs, rest stations)
What the next steps are (Talk to village about repairs, and permits or needs for signs and benches, and construction of signs and benches)

All together they're facing 5-10 minutes of time on the agenda, so there's no need to go too in depth on any particular thing.

Thanks so much!  See you tomorrow!

Girl Scouts: Camp Drivers--Detour Information!

Hi everyone,

18th Street in West Bend IS closed down with construction.

I just got this map/instructions from Girl Scouts.  It should get you to camp without getting lost on a million billion detours.

Aleks

Camp Directions for people driving up by themselves

Hi everyone,

If you need directions or an address for Silverbrook, here you go!  There may still be construction happening between getting off the freeway and getting into camp.  If there is, just follow detour signs.  Unfortunately, I can't control the road crews in West Bend.

Go past Walmart/Mcdonalds to 18th Ave.

Girl Scouts: September 11th 6:00 Greendale Board of Health

Hi,

Back to our Silver Project!

Our scouts were asked to present their work so far on the Greendale Walking Paths Audit and enhancement project they've been working on at the next Greendale Board of Health meeting next Tuesday 9/11 at 6:00 PM.

We'll take some time at the campout to recap and organize what we've done.  We'll highlight the areas we've surveyed so far on one of the full size maps and use stickers and notes to call out spots that need attention (specifically:  signs, rest areas, and repairs).

At camp, or on Monday, the girls can then prep a presentation including:  1)  Why this is important, 2)  What we did so far, and 3)  What comes next.

We'd probably only need 2-3 additional scouts, that night.  Who would be interested and available to be a community leader?

Camp Confirmations: And cooking ideas?

Hi everyone!

So far I know how Teagan, Liliana, Eva K., Ellen, Evie, and Katie are getting to camp on Friday.

I THINK I know how Kendra and Samantha (if available) are getting there on Saturday.

Does everyone else have travel arrangements set?  (Kahlen, Eva M., Quinn, Portia)

I'll have room for up to one more in the van going straight up from school, and Liliana's family has offered ride space to go up a little later on Friday night.  If you don't know how you're getting to camp, please reach out right away!

ALSO:  Don't forget the girls' homework!  I'm hoping a couple girls come up with great outdoor cooking ideas we can do Friday and Saturday nights! (Maybe Sunday morning?  Who knows?)  But I'll need to know their ideas today or tomorrow morning so we can make sure to have all our supplies and ingredients ready!

SATURDAY:  If your scout is coming up Saturday Morning, please be at camp by 9:00.  We'll either be out at the Games Field getting ready for camp to start or in Jo Ann Man Lodge wrapping up after breakfast.

#3)  DEPARTURE
In terms of getting home, I can give scouts a ride home LATE LATE on Saturday, Liliana K's mom can provide a ride for some scouts Saturday afternoon, or Kathleen and I will have some vehicle space available on Sunday afternoon as well.  If your scout needs a ride back to Greendale, please let me know so I can make sure there's enough space for everyone.

ALSO:  If it looks like it could be rainy, a poncho (even the disposable kind), an extra change of clothes and shoes would probably be appreciated by the girls.

Thanks so much everyone!  See you camping!

Don't remember whether you signed up or not?  Check here:

Also, the troop did pay for the campout (as usual!) for all the registered girls.  If you had registered, but cancel, we'll try to find someone to fill that place, but  if we can't, we'll need you to cover that cost. (But you'll get to keep the t-shirt and patch.)

Happy camping!

Girl Scouts: Ren Faire, and September Campout

Hi everyone!

Just a couple quick notes:

1)  Rennissance Faire trip SATURDAY 8/25.  If you're going to that, I'd like to meet up at our house at 9:00, so we can get there around opening at 10:00.  We can arrange carpools etc then too, since there's a charge for parking.  If your scout is going, plan to bring some money for food (lunch at least) and I'm sure the girls will want to do some shopping.

I am expecting:  Ellen, Adrhia, Eva K., Eva M., Yvette M., Evie, Kathleen, and Aleks.  Anyone else?

2)  September Campout:  It's coming up.  If you sent me a t-shirt size at the beginning of summer, then I have a t-shirt for your scout (or will after I pick them up today.)  BUT, even if you didn't get in before the t-shirt deadline, if you want to join in the fun, there's space available for you!  Sign up here to let me know when to expect you, etc. (There is a SLIM chance that the service area ordered more shirts.  If they did, I'll grab what I can!)

If you're wondering, here's who I had signed up at the t-shirt deadline:

Campers:

Eva M. YL
Eva K. YL
Katie YL
Ellen AS
Samantha AS
Kendra AS
Quinn AS
Liliana AS
Kahlen AS
Teagan AM
Evie AM
Kathleen AM
Portia AL
Aleks AXL

3)  Meeting schedule.  I don't know yet.  It will be a THURSDAY night each month after school.  But I'll have to figure out which ones.

Thanks everyone!

See you soon,

Aleks

Girl Scouts: MATC Career Camps -ASAP - 6th -10th Graders

Hi everyone!

I just got this from our council today, and even though Evie can't go, these sound like super cool opportunities for the girls.

MATC is offering two free "Career Camps"  One is for kids interested in making stuff and one is for kids interested in cooking stuff.  Please read the attached flyer and email explore@matc.edu for more information.  The programs are for any scouts entering 6th grade-10th grade this fall, and it sounds like they're completely free!

Unfortunately, I can't provide rides for these though, since we'll be out of town.  So transportation is up to you.

Girl Scouts: Any adults for tomorrow?

Hi again!

There are two girls who could go tomorrow, but would need a ride to the zoo.  Especially with Evie away at camp, I really need another adult to carpool to the zoo with us.

By any chance is there an adult available from 1-3 tomorrow to help out at the zoo?  I'll get a patch for you too!

Aleks

Girl Scouts: Zoo Volunteering--LAST CALL, can anyone go?

Hi everyone,

It's looking pretty slim for Tuesday's volunteering at the zoo (1:00-3:00, followed by hanging out at the zoo).

Can anyone go?

Girl Scouts: Volunteer opportunity at the zoo!

Hi everyone!

I just got this from one of our troop parents (Quinn's mom--thanks!) and it would be a lot of fun for our girls!

Here's what she wrote:

-----------------------------------------------------------
"I am in need of some volunteers here at the Zoological Society to help prepare Zoo gate brochures.  It is a fairly simple task, so I thought it might be a good opportunity for the girls. I would be willing to extend the invitation to the girls' older family members too, as I have pallets and pallets of brochures to prep and need lots of willing and capable volunteers.  Plus, if we could get a group of at least 10 volunteers for a minimum of 2 hours that day, I can get the families into the Zoo. "
------------------------------------------------------------

So, we decided that a good day would be next TUESDAY JULY 10TH FROM 1-3:00 PM.  Who would be interested in helping the zoo?  If we can get 10 volunteers (scouts and older family members) then all the helpers can hang out at the zoo afterwards too! I'd be happy to carpool.  Unfortunately, Evie is at Girl Scout camp that week, and Kathleen is working, so if I'm going to shuttle extra scouts, we'd need another grown up to join us in the vanpool too.

Let me know if anyone's available--I hope we can get 10!!

Girl Scouts: September Camp Out Sign Up

Hi,

Here's the sign up for the September campout!

For those of you who haven't done it before, the camp out is in cabins not tents, so it's not too scary!  We'll be in a cluster of small Adirondack cabins surrounding a main activity cabin, so the girls get to be a step closer to real camping than we've done in the past.  It'll be a great opportunity to be brave, and a wonderful experience for the girls!

The campout runs from Friday night through Sunday morning, and girls can choose to:

1)  Stay over 1 night ,

2) Stay over 2 nights,

3) Stay over no nights, but arrive by 9:00 Saturday Morning and Leave Saturday Night

Plan of action for the camp:

Friday: Arrive in the evening, hike around the lake, eat dinner, roast marshmallows, watch a movie, go to sleep.

Saturday:  Camp activities (archery, crafts, games, etc.) followed by roasting marshmallows, nighttime movie, and sleep.

Sunday:  Eat breakfast (maybe a campfire breakfast!), bonus archery or whichever activity the girls want to do, head home.

Sign up here:

See you soon!

I'll send a sign up page link out in a moment too, but I need those t-shirt sizes right away!

Girl Scouts: Reminder-bike saftey/bike decorating at the Health Department TOMORROW

Hi everyone,

Girl Scouts: Girl Scout SUMMER!

Hi everyone!

Evie just reminded me of MORE Girl Scout adventures that were happening this summer, so, to keep things straight, I created a sign up page.

Please sign your scout up for whichever she'll be attending (even if you already emailed me) so I don't lose anyone in the shuffle.

Thanks so much!

Here's what we have going on:

July 3rd:  4-6 PM, provide bike safety information and activities to kids getting their helmets fitted and decorating their bikes at the Greendale Health Department

July 4th:  9-Noon, March in the 4th of July Parade in Greendale

August 4th:  9:00-5:00 Visit Old World Wisconsin and learn about old time gardening and cooking, and life in general.

Sign Up Page here:

ALSO, don't forget about the "Summer of Fun" Girl Scout half day camps at Alice Chester and SIlverbrook for girls entering grades 6-12.  Evie and Ellen were the only attendees last week, so they got to spend all afternoon climbing the rock wall, doing archery, and other camp stuff with no lines, and doing whatever they wanted when they wanted--it was awesome!

Evie is also attending on July 14th, and August 3rd, so if anyone wants to go those dates, I can provide transportation.

Here are the dates again.  To register for these, visit gswise.org and click on the "Activities" tab at the top, then search for "Summer of Fun."  These are $10 apiece.

Girl Scouts: Sad news and glad news!

Hi everyone!

First the sad news:  The Girl Scout picnic that got rained out last weekend, was canceled when the venue was booked up at all reschedule dates.  Which is sad, BUT...

Then the glad news!

Glad news #1)  We will have our own Girl Scout picnic for the troop in Scout Lake Park which we'll combine with a Walking Path Audit day for the paths around Scout Lake.  Date is TBA, so keep your eyes and ears open.

Glad news #2)  Apparently the girls were pretty memorable at School's Out doing their bike safety booth.  The Greendale Health Department is doing a bike decorating/helmet fitting event on July 3rd from 4-6 and they asked us if we'd be interested in bringing the Bike Safety booth stuff there (coloring, trivia, checklists, etc.)  Who can come?

Glad news #3)  4th Of July Parade!  For the 7th (8th?) year our scouts are marching in the Greendale 4th of July Parade!  The parade runs from 10:00-12:00 (staging before that between 9:00-10:00)  Who can come?  Please let me know so I have an idea of how much candy to stockpile!

Glad news #4)  Girl Scout Old World Wisconsin 2018!  We'll try to make this one August 4th, so lock in that date.  We'll leave Greendale around 9:00, and plan to be back in Greendale at 5:00.  That day is the start of their "Heirloom Garden Extravaganza" which focuses on old time gardening, cooking, and eating, so I think it'll be something our girls will like a TON!  I'll get more details an an attendance list as the event gets closer.

Glad News #5)  Last one for now!  August 25th is Scout Day at the Bristol Renaissance Faire, so let's lock that in too.  We usually spend all day, so plan to leave Greendale around 10:00AM, and be back in Greendale around 7:00PM.  We can do more detals as the day gets closer.

Keep scouting!  See you soon!

Girl Scouts: Thank you!

Hi everyone!

Thank you so much for making the second ever "School's Out" event a rousing success in Greendale.  So many kids and families got out and had a bunch of fun celebrating the start of summer vacation, and every smile has YOU to thank!  It's always exciting to give families another chance to connect as a community and enjoy time together.

The Greendale Education Foundation, and the students it serves thank you too.  As we continue in our mission to enhance the educational experiences of the kids in our community, it's the dedication and generous hearts of people like you that make it possible.

Also, thank you to the girls who helped and joined in at the Greendale Walking Path evaluation day on Saturday!  Between everyone that showed up, there are only a few paths left to look over.  Those girls are definitely making a difference in the community, and everyone knows it!  (In fact, the Health Department asked if the girls would present the findings at a Board of Health meeting, and then later perhaps at a Village Board meeting!)

Very appreciatively yours,

Aleks Skibicki
Greendale Education Foundation Vice Chair
School's Out Event Coordinator
And your troop leader!

Girl Scout Picnic Canceled

Hi everyone,

For those of you signed up for the picnic this afternoon, great news:  You get to stay dry!

It's going to be rescheduled (300 hot dogs aren't going to waste!) but we don't know when yet.

Stay dry and keep scouting!

Girl Scouts: Slight adjustment after school today--moving to the Health Department

Hi,

Just a slight adjustment today.  We'll start in the Library, but the Health Department freed up their conference room for us to work in, so we'll move there to avoid being too loud and bothering the library patrons.

After we wrap up, we'll head back to the library.

So, if you come to pick up your scout and they're not in the front of the library, they'll be in the back with the Health Department.

Greendale Public Library not GMS Library

Hi,

Just a little clarification:  We'll meet in the Greendale Public Library, and not in the GMS library, in case anyone wasn't sure.

Aleks

Girl Scouts: One more Silver Award task

Hi!

At the last meeting we never got around to drawing routes for community members to evaluate at the walking path event on Saturday!  Oh no!

After school on Thursday, (6/7) anyone that is available would be a great help in getting that job done.  We'll meet up in the library after school so we can develop 5-10 good 1/2-3/4 mile loops for people to evaluate in Greendale on Saturday.

We have maps of Greendale that include the walking paths, and Evie worked out a good way to measure appropriate loops tonight, and will bring pencils, maps, and highlighters to the library after school.

It should be pretty fast (30 minutes tops, if the girls get to work well.)

No need to register or sign up, just show up after school.

Girl Scouts: Friday Update--Rain Plans

Hi everyone,

If you're signed up to help at a Girl Scout Booth (Bike Safety, Make Your Own Game, or Silver Project) on Friday, I have a rain plan.

I got permission for most activities to go into GMS, including all our Girl Scout Activities.  I'll let you all know by noon what the plan for the day is, and whether you should meet on Broad Street on in GMS.

Thanks for helping!  It'll be fun rain or shine!

Girl Scout Weekend: Additional Choices for June 8th

Happy last week of school!

What a fun meeting last week--we did some acting to get to know each other and the girl scout law and even connected it to our MEdia badgework, we made some games, made some ice cream, and made some bike safety trivia for this weekend!  And speaking of this weekend:

Since "Girl Scout Weekend" is approaching, and all the spots for scouts to help at the School's Out event on Friday were filled (WOW!), a girl scout gave me a great idea.  They had seen our scouts' presentation at the GMS Service Fair (Great job to the scouts that helped with that; your teachers were very very impressed!) and she thought we could do that at School's Out too.  So I rearranged the activity maps at School's Out so we could have a booth for our Silver Award, and added sign up slots for that.

Remember, all scouts helping at School's Out will get to take a break to go do the School's Out activities, (face painting, crafts, etc.) and also get dinner from the Lion's Club grill!

So if you're available, sign up here, and let's try to get some more community members to join us in making Greendale a healthier place to walk, live, and grow!

Aleks

P.S.  I was thinking about what our Scouts have already done for their project, and the list is pretty great:

Met with the Greendale Health Department,
Met with the SAGE Greendale Health Workgroup
Designed a poster
Searched, and found maps of Greendale that have the walking paths on them
Posted the poster all over Greendale
Met with Mr. Weiss to arrange to present at the Service Fair
Made a display and presentation for the Service Fair
Presented to all the GMS 6th and 7th graders, and staff (!!) at the GMS Service Fair
Wrote a great thank you note to the Greendale Women's Club for their donation to the project.

Our girls are incredibly competent, brave, capable, and are becoming the kinds of young women to be proud of!  They really can do anything!

Girl Scouts May Meeting: THURSDAY!

Hi everyone!

The end of the year is really coming FAST!  Please sign up if your scout will be attending the meeting this Thursday.  As always, it's right after school, at GMS.

On the agenda:

Make maps for community members to use at the Walking Trail Evaluation on 6/9
Review our Bike Safety so we're ready on 6/8
Make our own ice cream snack
Make our own games outside for fun and to prep for helping on 6/8 too

ALSO, I need to register for the GS Picnic so if everyone can take a look at the GS Weekend Sign Up and make sure you're signed up in the appropriate places, it'd be great!

Thanks everyone!  See you Thursday!

Girl Scouts: September Campout--New things!

Hi everyone!

The September Campout is still a ways away, but I have to register us pretty soon.  The girls always enjoy it, and as they get older, there's more and more they can get out of it.

One option I'd like to run by the girls is a different camp site for the night(s).  Nearer to the main lodge is a series of 2-person mini-cabins with one large "main room" for activities, etc.  Our girls are all old enough to stay in those lodges now, and it might be fun for them to be more independent than they've been in the past.

In addition, the Cadette cooking badge is officially "Outdoor Cooking" so whatever else is going on for the campout, expect to earn that badge too, as we learn, experiment, and do a whole variety of outdoor cooking techniques (dutch oven apple cobbler is AWESOME!)

So, before I register us, can you check with your scouts and see:
A) If they're interested in doing the "Oceans of Fun" campout at Silverbrook this year (September 7-8-9, arriving after school on the 7th and heading home either Saturday night or Sunday morning.)  and
B) How they feel about doing activities and group stuff in a big lodge, but then getting closer to real camping by sleeping with a partner in more rustic 2-bed A-frame cabins?  (They're all within sight of the main cabin!  Don't worry, it's not THAT rustic yet!)

Thanks everyone!  It sounds crazy, but September is closer than it sounds!

Girl Scouts: Flyering Friday Timeline

Hi everyone!

It sounds like there's some interest in Flyering Friday, so here's what we'll do:

We'll start at the Greendale Library at 11:00 AM, and plan to be in Ferch's enjoying frozen custard at 1:00.  (Whether we'll have just started our ice cream, or will be just finishing our ice cream is up in the air depending on how fast or slow we are.)

So far, it sounds like I'll be picking up:  Eva, Kendra, and (maybe?) Ellen.  There would still be room for up to 2 more in the van.  If I'm picking your scout up, then expect to be picked up between 10:20-10:45 depending on the pickup order.  (Which I probably won't decide until Friday.)

Everyone is welcome.  Who could say no to a group of amazing girls like ours?

Girl Scouts: Flyering Greendale Friday?

Hi!

I see Kendra and Kahlen have signed up to put flyers up in downtown Greendale businesses.  Awesome!

I have flyers printed in color, and we're ready to go.  Since we have off of school on Friday, would any of the girls be interested in making it a group time?  I'm thinking around lunch-ish time so we can wrap up with some ice cream at Ferch's?

Girl Scouts: Any scouts interested in being 8th graders?

Hi,

Mr Weiss has allowed 3-4 of our scouts to present their Silver Project alongside the 8th graders at the Service Fair Tuesday.

We have 2 of the girls who met with the health department ready to go, but if 1-2 other scouts are interested in helping get more community members out to the event on the 9th and also interested in sharing how they are serving the community let me know ASAP. (I have to let Mr. Weiss know which scouts are interested before Monday morning!)

Girl Scouts: Summer of Fun is now register-able

Hi everyone!

Those "mini-daycamps" I emailed about a couple days ago, just opened up for registration.  There are only 25 spots available for each one, so register now if you are interested!

(If you had emailed yesterday about any of the camps, I registered you myself just now, so you're all set.)

If anyone wants to know when other girls are going, at the moment I have these registrations, and would have extra van space to drive some more girls if they want to join in:

2 Scouts registered for:
ALICE CHESTER on June 19th 1:30-4:00
Rock Climbing, Archery, Camp Games

2 Scouts registered for:
SILVERBROOK: on July 14th, 10:00-12:30

and 3 Scouts registered for:

You can find these under ACTIVITIES in the gswise.org site, and then search for "Summer."  They're all listed as "Summer of Fun Club."

IF you do register your scout, please let me know, because I'm sure someone will ask me if "anyone else" is going to certain dates.

Girl Scouts: Three more notes: Silver, Camp, and followup to the Summer Camp Adventures

Hi everyone,

Three more quick notes:

#1)  Make sure to sign up for the Weekend of Scouts!

#2)  I've attached the finalists for the 2018 Silverbrook September Camp T-Shirt.  Vote for your favorite T-Shirt (A,B, or C), and favorite Patch (3, 7, 4).  As always, our troop is in the running in both the patch and shirt categories!

#3)  I tried using the GSWISE website to register for some of the camp activities I just sent out.  They don't seem to be in the system there.  I'm checking to see if I did something wrong, or if there's something else we need to know.

Happy Scouting!

Girl Scouts: Summer Fun!

Hi!

There was a meeting for troop leaders yesterday, and they gave us a flyer for something new from scouts just for girls our age!

It's for girls entering grades 6-12, and it's 1-day camp sessions at Silverbrook and Alice Chester over summer.  Each session is $10, or you can register for 3 for $25.

Register at gswise.org > ACTIVITIES  (  http://www.gswise.org/en/Activities/activities-list.html  )

If you wnt to go with a friend, make sure to coordinate through them.  These are a great way to take advantage of the camp and wilderness spaces Girl Scouts offers in a way that's more tailored to what our girls would like.

Here's what the choices are:

SILVERBROOK:
July 14th, 10:00-12:30
Paddle Boat, Art Project, Campfire + Smores
July 21st 10:00-12:30
Waterfront games, Lanyards, Campfire + Smores
August 3rd 10:00-12:30
Hiking, Camp Games, Campfire + Smores

ALICE CHESTER
June 19th 1:30-4:00
Rock Climbing, Archery, Camp Games
June 26th 1:30-4:00
Boating, Hiking, STEM Activities
July 2nd 1:30-4:00
Swimming, Art Project, Campfire + Smores

If you would like to go but your scout needs a ride, let me know, and if Evie's available, we'll sign up and I'll be happy to drive.  (If she's not, then I can put word out to other scouts and see if anyone else is going that could offer a ride.)

These sound like a lot of fun!
