Girl Scouts: Second Call on Ice Fishing

I know, it sounds totally nuts to even think about outdoor activities when it's this cold right now, but here goes:

I just wanted to send another email out to test the waters on trying ice fishing at Scout Lake on 2/8.  Last year a handful of the girls did some ice fishing on Milwaukee County's free fishing day, and they had a lot of fun.  (To be honest, half the fun was sliding around on Scout Lake!)  This year a fishing organization will be providing all the equipment, so we just have to show up bundled and ready to have fun.  The clinics are geared for kids too, so they're ready to keep the girls' attention.  With luck, this year someone will even catch something!

I've included the flyer again as an attachment.  I only heard from a couple folks last time, but I hope we can get a nice group out there.  I do think the girls will like it, and who knows...we are working on our cooking badges right now...

And of course we'll all shoot over for some hot chocolate afterwards to warm up.

As always, if someone's scout might be interested, but the parents prefer the warmth, let me know and we can arrange rides/etc.

Girl Scouts: First February Meeting IMPORTANT

Hello again,

Since our family is leaving town on Wednesday morning , and with school canceled today and tomorrow, I'm not going to get a chance to drop off the sign-up slips for meeting attendance for the meeting on February 6th.  (If I can get them to another parent who can get them to school when it re-opens I'll try to do that.)  But even if I get the slips out to you, I won't have time to do much with them, since we're due to get back into Milwaukee the Wednesday right before the 2/6 meeting takes place.

I've made a sign-up genius page to let me know when to expect you.  When we get home from our trip on Wednesday (2/5) I'll call anyone not on the list to make sure it's complete, but there's a chance I'll be a little cranky from spending time on a plane and coming back to the cold, so it'd be better for all of us if you sign up early! :)

And as always, if anyone would like to sign up to help at the meeting, that would be great great great!  (I promise I was just joking before and won't actually be cranky when I get back.)  The meeting helper sign up page is here:

Thanks a million,

Aleks

Girl Scouts: P.S. One more thing

Hi again!

Girl Scouts arranged a Girl Scout Day with the Milwaukee Bucks this year, where Girl Scouts and their family and friends get buy-one-get-one-free tickets for the February 22nd game against the Indiana Pacers. The flyer is above with more information.  You can click on it to enlarge or print it.

Let me know if you're thinking about going.  If enough people are interested, (and they want to) we can make it a group outing.

Girl Scouts: Attendance List 1/30

Hello everyone!

In order to make sure our snack mom (Thanks Mrs. Cooper!)  has the numbers right for our meeting on Thursday (1/30), check your email to make sure I have you on the attendance list for the meeting.

If you're on the list, but not coming, let me know!  If you're coming, but not on the list, SUPER let me know!

The meeting should be fun.  I'll be out of town, but Ms. Kelly has a lot of cool stuff ready.  You'll work on your cooking badge, like the group that met on the first Thursday meeting did, so you'll be caught up with that, then Ms. Kelly has some cool Cookie crafts to work on and have some fun with.

Also, this will be Lara's first meeting with us.  She's one of our College Park friends, so be sure to make her feel like our Girl Scout sister!

Girl Scouts: Ice skating tomorrow and weather concerns

Hi,

With wind chill and all, it looks like it'll be crazy cold tomorrow.  (High of 15F not counting wind chill from 20mph winds!) So, while we're a pretty tough group of girls, I think we'll call off the ice skating tomorrow.  I hate to cancel events but I hate frostbite even more!

That said, we'll still have our share of winter fun this year--I promise!  We have the ice fishing clinic in February, and I'm working on scheduling a Winter Campout weekend for the girls too. And, if you registered at kidsskatefree.com this week, your free pass for next week will be in your emailbox Monday morning and we can schedule a group rollerskating day soon!

Thanks for your understanding, the cold can't keep up forever!

Girl Scouts: A new idea for February

Hi again!

I saw this when I was looking for stuff to do, and since the girls had a good time ice fishing last year, I thought some might enjoy trying it this year.

At Scout Lake Park on Feb 8th, there'll be Ice Fishing Clinics at Scout Lake Park.  They start at 9:00 am and a new one starts each hour, on the hour, until 2:00.  I've included the flyer.  Let me know who's interested in going so I can get the right number of patches.  Everything is free, and fishing gear will be provided there too, so the girls just need to bring themselves and warm clothes!

(Seriously, the girls that did ice fishing last year had a great time, and when some got  bored there was the path to walk around the lake and look for animal tracks, etc.)

Girl Scouts: Our Area Father-Daughter Dance

Hi everyone!

Our service area (Greendale, Greenfield, and Hales Corners) is putting on a Father-Daughter Dance February 9th from 4-6PM at the Greenfield Community Center.  The RSVP deadline is pretty soon--January 26th--so if you want to go, let the service area team (not me) know at:  greencornersgswise@hotmail.com .

It's $12 per couple, and since its a GS event, let me know if you plan on going but would like the troop to cover the cost--as I've said before, that's one reason we sell the cookies.

I've included the flyer from the Service Area with the details.

Girl Scouts: Get your irons ready!

Ok everyone, get your irons ready!

I've been sorting out patches, and will be sending baggies home with the girls tomorrow.  Everyone gets at least one, most of you have two coming, and some have a whole pile!  If you got the lighthouse patch for the nut sale, that you should already have--it was in with the rest of the selling prizes.

Let's decorate these Brownies!

Girl Scouts: Saturday Fun and Future Fun!

Hi again!

It sounds like there are a couple people interested in ice skating at the Greendale Rink (or at least interested in the Hot Chocolate afterwards!)  So, in order to hit a warmer part of the day, would 12:00 work on Saturday 1/25?

On a similar note, Maya's mom showed me a pretty cool thing we could do this winter--especially with some of the weather we've been having.  If you register at kidsskatefree.com , each week on Monday morning they send you a free roller skating pass to a rink that you chose.  Nearby, we have Incrediroll on Highway 100 and Oklahoma.  I've registered Evie and Maya's registered too.  Incrediroll has free skating for registered participants on Saturday 9:30-12:00, and Sunday from 12:30-3:00 and 3:30-6:00.  Skate rental is not included, but isn't much, and if we do it as a troop activity, as always, let me know and the troop will cover it.

So, let's see if we can get the girls all signed up and make it a party!

Girl Scouts: Next Week Change of Plans

Hello again!

Well, we got to the domes and they had canceled the Polish event due to work being done in the Tropical Dome.  Likewise, the Chinese New Year event is canceled for next week too.  (Which is too bad, that one was really great last year!)

So, we're in the position of looking for something cool and fun to do on Saturday.

I know a lot of our girls enjoy ice skating--if we wanted to keep it local, we could go skating at the Greendale ice rink by the middle school, behind the Panther Pub.  Then we could retire over to Broad Street Coffee or Ferch's for hot chocolate afterwards?

Anyone in?  Or does anyone have other ideas?

Girl Scouts: Domes Reminder

Just a reminder for the families going to the domes tomorrow.

We'll be meeting up at the domes at 1:00 tomorrow.  Sounds like no one needs a ride or wants to carpool?  Let me know if that changes.

See you there!

Girl Scouts: 2 Things

Hiya,

1)  I'll be out of town on the 30th, so I'll miss the meeting, so we'll need a parent helper to join in with Ms. Kelly for the meeting.   Who can join in?  We have things set up to do a step in the cooking badge, and Ms. Kelly has some Cookie crafts to make to keep us in the Cookie mood and to use at our Cookie booths.  It should be a great time!

2)  For those families going to the domes Saturday at 1:00, does anyone need (or want) carpooling?  Or do you all want to meet up there?  We have room in the van for up to 3 more people if need be.  And if any of the girls want to go, but parents can't, let me know and they can fill one of the seats too!

Girl Scouts: Early is OK for cookie orders!

Just a quick reminder,

If you think you have your cookie order pretty much decided on, there's no reason to wait until the last minute to send it over to Ms. Kelly!  You can send the totals to her by email too, just make sure to send them in the same order they are on the order form sheet so it's easy for her to plug them into the computer.

I know from doing it last year that a little extra time was always appreciated.  She'll be ordering extra cookies for the booths anyways, so if you sell more after you submit the order, we can cover that.  It's more important to get the order in on time than worry whether there's one more box waiting to get sold.

And don't add extras into your order for selling at the cookie booths.  The troop orders extras (a lot of extras!), and assigns the ones sold at the booths to the girls that were there.  They're added on to whatever your initial order was.  Just order what you sold, or plan to sell on your own.

Thanks a million,

Aleks

Girl Scouts: Saturday at the Domes

Hi,

It sounds like a couple families are interested in the Domes.  To make things work, it sounds like we should go at 1:00.  So let's set that as the schedule.

So, who else is interested in Poland Under the Glass at the Domes, Saturday 1/18 at 1:00PM?

Aleks

Girl Scouts: A Few Updates and a Reminder

Hello again!

First for the updates:

1)  Last Thursday's meeting was great!  We invented our own recipes, we played a healthy-eating game, and made from scratch our snack--homemade berry cream cheese roll-ups, with fresh berries!  The girls really had a good time using their muscles to mush the cream cheese and berries together, almost as good of a time as they had eating it!  The meeting on the 30th will be a repeat of this last one for the girls that didn't get to go on the 9th.

2)  The cookie kick off party was a lot of fun too.  Thanks to everyone that braved the ice sheets to come out.  I think the girls enjoyed it, and I've heard reports of cookie crown sightings around Greendale the next day!

3)  Patch Update.  Yes, I have a lot of patches to hand out to the girls.  I'm sorry they've gotten backed up!  There are artist patches, campout patches, nursing home visit patches, patches for the Discovery World trips, and patches for the RecPlex overnight adventure.  I just have to sort out who gets what, but they should be soon.

4)  Speaking of Discovery World Trips, it's almost last call for anyone that wants their scout to go on the Discovery World Spa Chemistry Sleepover:
Name: Spa Chemistry Sleepover 1/31/2014 7:00 PM-2/1/2014 7:00 AM
Facility Location: Discovery World
Milwaukee, WI
Description:
Spa Chemistry Sleepover
Grades 2-5
Discover the science and art of perfumes, soaps, and lotions. Create your own unique spa recipes and take home your own signature fragrance. Pet a shark in the Reiman Aquarium, lie on the bed of nails, and wake up to a sunrise over Lake Michigan.
PLEASE NOTE: Since bed space is limited we ask that troops only register the required number of adults to meet Safety-Wise ratios. If more adults want to attend, please contact the council two weeks before the event to see if space is available.

And finally:

5)  The 18th (This Saturday)  is the Poland Under the Glass event at the Domes.  These are usually also a bunch of fun with crafts and food and fun things to learn and do.  We can drop in when we like, the event runs from 9-4.  $6.50 adults, $5.00 admission for kids 6-17.  As always, let me know if you'd like the troop to cover it.  Let me know if you'd like to attend, so we can schedule the best time to go.

Have a great week, and see you soon!

Girl Scouts: P.S. Don't forget the cookie party on Friday!

Hi again!

Don't forget the Cookie Party on Friday in the Highland View Gym from 6-8!  Girl Scouts from all over Greendale are coming, and we have a lot of fun activities and games to do there, as well as samples of our favorite Girl Scout Cookies!  (New this year:  cookie catapults, the cookie face race, and cookie necklaces!)

Girl Scouts: Thanks for checking in--here's what I have

Hiya,

Thanks to everyone who checked in about which meeting they can attend.  Here's what I have at the moment.  Let me know if I'm wrong!  This Thursday looks like a big-ish group.  I have two parents helping out (Thanks Tammy and Michelle!) but if anyone else wants to help us start working on our cooking badge, you're certainly welcome.  The extra grown-up hands could come in...well...handy!

Girl Scouts: Meeting Thursday

Hi,

With the extra day off from school, I'm not going to have a lot of time to collect and double check the slips that went home last week telling me which meeting your scouts are going to.   I would really appreciate it if you could email me to let me know whether to expect your scout this Thursday (1/9) or the last Thursday of January (1/30).

Thanks a million, and stay warm!

Girl Scouts: last one for the night--I hope!

Hello again,

I just wanted to let everyone know I (finally) updated the website.  The schedule for 2013-2014 is up there, and the sign up sheets for helping at the meeting and bringing snacks are updated for this year too.

I also set it up so that the emails I send to the Girl Scouts list will go up there too (starting with this one), so if you're looking for something from me and don't want to dig through old emails, you'll find it there.  Also, if you comment on the page it'll go to my email too.

I deleted the posts from last January to eliminate any confusion too.

Here's the address for everyone:

Good night (for real this time!)

Aleks

The Website is Back in Business!

With apologies to anyone that's checked the website this year looking for schedule or other information, I am pleased to announce the schedule and sign up links on the right hand side are updated for 2013-2014.  The snack sign up doesn't include a sign up for the meeting coming up on 1/9 because the girls will be making the snack and I haven't winnowed the ideas down to a single one yet.

From here out I should be able to keep this up to date more effectively too.

Thanks for your patience!

Aleks
