Girl Scouts: Did you see this? It sounds pretty cool!

This looks like a great presentation!  Wednesday August 5, 1:00.

This Awesome Girls online event will bring together two of America's boldest leaders. Mary Barra is Chairman and CEO of General Motors, our country's biggest car maker.  Mary is changing the automotive industry, making cars safer and better for our environment.  Sylvia Acevedo is CEO of Girl Scouts.  As an actual rocket scientist, she's leading the way for girls to take on some of the world's biggest challenges.

Mary and Sylvia will share stories and show photos, tools, and videos that tell their stories about becoming both engineers and leaders. They'll tell girls how they can follow in their footsteps with the new Automotive Engineering three-badge series for Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors. The event will wrap up with a live Q&A for girls to ask Mary and Sylvia questions. Girls will leave with next steps to dive into automotive engineering!

Leading this amazing conversation is Robin Roberts, Good Morning America Co-Anchor.

Please note, this event begins at 2pm Eastern, 1pm Central, 12pm Mountain, and 11am Pacific.

Girl Scouts: Followup "Art Party" meeting, Silver Award Pickup PLEASE REPLY ASAP!

Hi everyone!

#1)  I know the girls have been diligent on their assignments for the Art Party, and things seem to be hopping along, so let's schedule a followup meeting to take the next steps. This week won't work, but I scheduled a Zoom meeting for Monday August 3rd at 4:00 (same time as the last one).  The invite information is at the end of this email.

#2)  Silver Award pickups.  Has anyone not yet scheduled a pick up for their Silver Award pin and certificate from Girl Scouts?  If you tell me today or EARLY Tuesday, I'll include yours in my pickup run to the GS Resource Center. But I do need to know today or tomorrow for sure.

#3)  Remember to try to save some time for the Fall Campout, September 11-13.  I just got out of a meeting with GS on the rules and requirements to keep it COVID safe.  It'll be very different from camps past--we'll pretty much be operating on our own, but there'll still be archery, axe-throwing, fishing, camp cooking, nightime hikes, etc.  With the distancing procedures in place, we may not even know any other scouts are at Silverbrook that weekend.  And obviously, there's no pressure to for any scout to attend if you're not comfortable with them attending.

ZOOM MEETING INFORMATION:

Aleks Skibicki is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

Girl Scouts: If science is more your jam on Saturday, then maybe this is for you instead

If science is more your style than art then maybe this is more for you (or you could do BOTH!)

The Urban Ecology Center is doing a "Yardversity Blitz" on Saturday to document the biological diversity found in our yards and the spaces we call home in Wisconsin.  Plants and animals around our homes are often the least studied part of nature--but they're still a part of it.

They're encouraging people to use a couple free apps (see the link) to record all the life you can find in your yard or other location you think of as a place you live--if you spend lots of time at a park, or a trail, or anyplace like that, it could count too.

From the website:

"Become a community scientist by exploring the biodiversity in your very own backyard!"

Back in May, the Urban Ecology Center hosted the Backyard Birding Blitz as a way to encourage you to go outside, stay connected to nature and to collectively compile the largest bird species list without the use of fossil fuels all virtually!. This time we are expanding this event to include all biodiversity, called "Yardversity Blitz!" Through the Yardversity Blitz, you will have the chance to become a community scientist through the exploration of the flora and fauna found in your very own backyard! This event will be completely virtual with plant and animal-themed discussions, family-friendly activities, all while you collect data outside. The Yardversity Blitz will end with a nature-themed trivia session. This event will take place on Saturday, July 18th from 8:00 am to 11:00 am CST -- view complete schedule below.

Art Opportunity this Week

Since we have so many artists in the group, I thought they might enjoy this:

"Chalk the State" this weekend, sponsored by the Wisconsin Museum of Art:

Your Sidewalk is the Best Canvas

At the heart of summer during the last weekend in July, Art Institutions statewide want you to take to your sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots to spread positive messages, inspire change, and create bright, joyful works of chalk art to share with friends, family, and neighbors. Besides being fun, it's a reminder to us all that we're in this together - so grab some chalk and #chalkthestate.

Check out the link and join in if it sounds fun!

Hi everyone,

What a great meeting today.  The girls definitely had a lot of good ideas, and we're on track to putting something fun together.

The basic idea where things ended up is to have an open "Equality and Fairness Art Party" where we provide materials for members of the community to do various art projects focusing on spreading a positive message about equality and fairness in our community.

The girls wanted to include a focus on a broad range of minority and traditionally underrepresented groups, including Black, LGBTQ+, Latino/Latina, and all other underrepresented groups.

Art projects the girls wanted to include:
Lawn sign making,
Rock painting,
COVID mask decorating,
Coloring pages,
Sidewalk chalking, and
Bumper sticker/magnet making.

The jobs they need to do to accomplish this are:

JOB 1)  Find a venue.  Park pavillion? In front of the library? Parking lot behind the library?  Who do we get permission from?
JOB 2)  Determine how to organize in such a way that it is COVID and socially distancing safe.  Questions to answer:  Is this even possible to do safely?  Do people have to register for a time slot or project?  How do we keep people separated?  How many people can be doing art at any time?  Places to look for answers:  Greendale Health Department, Online CDC or WI State guidelines.
JOB 3)  Promote the event.  Once a date is picked, and a venue, find ways to promote the event.  Options:  Online through groups like the library, Greendale School District, and/or PAGE.  In person with fliers in Greendale.
JOB 4-9)  Make supply lists for each art project. (4 = Lawn signs, 5 = Rock painting, 6 = Mask decorating, 7 = Coloring pages, 8 = Sidewalk chalking, 9 = Bumper sticker/magnet making.)
JOB 10)  Create a list of positive messages, quotes, images, ideas, and inspirations, that people can use on the art the create.
JOB 11)  Get all supplies and materials to the event venue and have people there to supervise it.

NOTE 1)  If the answer to the questions in JOB 2 are:  "No.  This cannot be done safely in a COVID environment," then the girls are interested in looking into ways to share it with the community without having an actual event.  For example, having just scouts do art but distributing their creations through the community.

ASSIGNMENT TIME:

Girls:  Please take (at least) one job to try to accomplish, and email your choice to the whole list to make sure that no one is doubling up on jobs. I did not BCC the email this time, so you can reply-all and everyone will get it.  Please read all emails before picking a job (or more) to make sure you're not picking a job that someone else is already working on.

This sounds like a lot of fun!  Lets see what the girls can do!

Girl Scouts: Outdoor volunteer activity opportunities at Schlitz Audubon Center

Hi everyone,

I got this from the Schlitz Audubon Center, and thought some of you might be interested.  They have several "drop in" volunteer opportunities available at the center planting seedlings to restore several of the habitats there.

Happy planting!

Girl Scouts: Thanks! And reminder for Monday's meeting.

Hi everyone!

First:  Milwaukee, and Lake Michigan thank all the girls (and families!) that helped clean up on Saturday.  I hope you all got as many thank you's from beach-goers as I did!  The girls set a great example, and helped make a difference in the community.  Great job!!!

Second:  Just a reminder about our online meeting on Monday at 4:00.  The girls wanted to discuss ideas and actions they could take to help promote fairness, equity, and justice in the community, so be ready for that.

P.S. Bay View Park/Beach Address

In case you need it, here's the address for tonight.

3120 S Lake Dr, Milwaukee, WI 53207

Look for the silver van with the Girl Scout Cookie magnet on the back.  I'l have gloves, grabbers, and garbage buckets around there somewhere.

Bug spray is recommended.

Aleks

Girl Scouts: Still planning to beach clean up--but keep an eye on the weather!

Hi everyone,

I'm looking at the weather but think we can still have our beach cleanup tonight.  The chances for thunderstorms keeps moving later, and lower.  At the moment, I see a 30% chance at 8:00PM, so we should be safe.  Obviously weather can be volatile, so use your judgement as the time gets closer.

I had originally scheduled for 6:45, but will get there earlier (6:30-ish) if anyone wants to get an early start.

See you later!

Girl Scouts: Cookie Prizes--you want 'em; I got 'em! Also Saturday Night Beach Clean Up!

Hi everyone,

I hope everyone is doing well.

#1)  I picked up cookie prizes from Girl Scouts yesterday and am sorting them out today.  My plan is to drop them off on porches and doors on Friday, so I'll confirm addresses this afternoon/evening to make sure I'm going to the right place.

#2)  Just to get back in the swing of things, Milwaukee County Parks has been looking for "micro-volunteers" doing what our troop has been doing for years--just spending a little time cleaning up our parks, so I figured it's a perfect time to get back to it.  It's also something we can do and stay nicely separated, but still together.

Time:  6:45PM Saturday July 11
Place:  Meet at the park above Bay View Beach ( 3120 S Lake Dr, Milwaukee, WI 53207 ) across from the Marion Center on Lake Drive in Bay View.
What:  I'll have grabbers and buckets/bags and we'll make the world a better place by cleaning it up!

Masks are highly encouraged, since we don't want to infect our friends in case we're carrying any bugs!

#3)  I haven't heard from Chanese about a best time to have an online meeting to come up with something we can do to be part of the equity work going on, so I think we'll just schedule an online meeting for the girls to come up with their own plans/ideas and get going.  Would people be able to join in Monday 7/13 at 4:00-5:00?

Happy Scouting!

Aleks
