A taste of what we did at College Park last week

Hi everyone!

If you want to see what our girls are capable of, here's the brochure they came up with at the meeting last week for our Bike Safety event on June 9th.  Be proud!

Girl Scouts: May Meeting

Hi everyone!

Last month worked out well with one meeting at HV and one at CP, so we'll try that again.  Sign up here:

April was a working month, so May will be more of a fun month.  We'll pick our jobs for the Bike Safety Clinic on June 9th, and then fun times!

Remember to signup for the Bridging Ceremony if your scout is a 5th grader continuing in scouts for next year, or let me know if your scout is not continuing on next year.  Here's the list for that:

(Also, if your scout is a 4th grader, you don't need to go to the bridging--you'll still be a GS Junior next year--but let me know if you're continuing on in scouts at that link.)

Girl Scouts: Time to be a star!

Hi everyone!

It's time to design next year's camp t-shirt and patch!  Last year was the first year since the contest started that someone from our troop didn't ultimately win either the shirt or patch design.  So let's win it back!

The rules are simple.  I've attached the design flyer, and you just have to fill it in and get it back to me (on paper or scanned in electronically) before May 7th.

Happy creating!

Girl Scouts: April Recap!

Hi everyone!

So, March was a fun and games meeting, so April was bit more work-oriented.  So, here's what we've been up to:

We started our meetings by remembering Earth Day and going outside to clean up around our schools.  The girls did such a great job--I hope they clean their rooms at home as well as they cleaned up around the school!

Then, we moved on to work for our Bronze Award Bicycle Safety Project.

At Highland View the girls broke into groups and made specific lists of what we need for each of several project areas:  Bicycle Skills Course, Safety Lecture from the GPD/GFD, and a Safety Trivia Contest/Crossword Puzzle.  I'll type those lists up and in May we'll divide up responsibilities.  Finally we finished by talking about how to promote the event, and the girls put together promotion plans that'll also be on the "assigned responsibilities" list. (And then we had our snack of course!)

At College Park, the girls had to do some research and thinking!  The girls' job at CP was to put together information for a Bike Safety Brochure to give out at the event.  The girls decided the brochure will have 6 sections:  Rules to follow, Things NOT to do when riding your bike, The dangers of NOT being safe, Hand signals everyone should know, Keeping your bike safe, and Safety equipment for riders. (And we also had a snack.)

In May, we'll talk responsibilities and jobs for the event, but also bring back the fun and do a bunch of Girl Scout games!

If you haven't yet, please make sure to let me know your plans for next year and for the bridging ceremony here:  http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a4fa5ad22a13-bridging1

Thanks so much!

Girl Scouts: Super bad news about the Discovery World sleepover

Hi everyone,

After going in and trying to register a couple additional scouts, who were having trouble with the online GS system, for the Discovery World "Light Up the Night" sleepover, I was told that registration had closed early for the event.  When I asked why, and if there was anything I could do, the answer I got was below.  (See forwarded message from Mary Otto)

I have further asked them to let me know if anything changes, since this was a longstanding troop tradition and some of the girls will be too old to participate next year--so this was their last shot.

If I hear about  anything changing, I'll pass word along, or if they open up a loophole for us I'll pass it on too, but for the moment, if you hadn't registered by last week, then your scout most likely will not be able to attend the event.  I will keep trying of course.

Sorry to bring bad news,

Aleks

Good Morning Aleks,
Discovery World double booked for the date of the activity, therefore, our capacity was changed and we had to close the activity early. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause you.

Per our records, we believe your case has been resolved.  Please reach out to us if you have any additional questions.

Thank you for contacting Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast.

Girl Scouts: Bridging and Next Year

Hi everyone!

Good morning and Happy Easter!

Our year is wrapping up, and many of our girls are 5th graders, moving to 6th grade next year, which means big changes for them in scouting.

Before I go any further, I do have a favor to ask:  Please let me know if your scout plans to continue scouting next year.  At the end of this email is a link to a sign up genius to let me know how to plan.  Thanks so much!

OK, the obvious big change is that our 5th grade girls are moving from Junior Girl Scouts to Girl Scout Cadettes.  At 6th grade, the girls start getting more and more responsibility in scouting.  For example, they start putting on the events, like the Father Daughter Dance that's put on by GMS and GHS scouts.  Events for scouts also start to transition to more forward-looking events, like career explorer events.

To mark this change, once more, we're holding a multi-level Bridging Ceremony.  All 5th grade scouts are invited (and 1st and 3rd grade scouts.) (4th graders and 6th graders:  you were up last year and will be up again next year!)  It's June 7th, from 6:00-7:00PM in the Highland View Gym.  Instead of a keynote speaker this year, we're considering having a slideshow-style movie with pictures from the various troops throughout the year.  If you have any Girl Scout pictures from this year, it would be great if you could send them to me for inclusion in the slide show.  You can RSVP for this in the sign up link below as well.

That's the big announcement for now.  Please, let me know your plans for the Bridging Ceremony (5th graders) and for scouting next year (everyone!) at the link here:

Have a great day!

Girl Scouts: Still time to sign up for the last Discovery World Sleepover!

Hi everyone!

This is the last chance our scouts will have to do a Discovery World sleepover.  The long tradition is coming to an end--but with an all-new edition of the event:  Light Up The Night!

The registration deadline is May 5th, and here's how:

At GSWise.org go to MyGS on the right hand side in the green.

Then go to Member Profile,

Then click on the Activities Tab

Search for "light up the night"

Then click on "Register now" and follow the instructions from there!

Hi everyone,

Girl Scouts: April Funshine! Meetings and Greeting!

Hi everyone!

Just a couple notes:

1)  The Meeting Sign Up for April is now up.  Remember, there's only 1 April meeting at Highland View (April 12th) and one at College Park (April 26th).  Hope for good weather.  We'll do some outdoor activities to celebrate earth day, and also do some more work prepping for our Bronze Project--the Bike Safety Expo on June 9th!

2)  Speaking of the Bike Safety Expo, some of our girls met with the Greendale Police and Fire Departments today to secure their help for the event.  It should be a lot of fun, and our Greendale safety crew are ready to be a part of the action!  We also met with the staff at Wheel and Sprocket, and they're committed to being a part too.  We're just hammering out the details!

Just take a look at these girls in action.  How could anyone say no?

Happy scouting!

Aleks
